Planet Nero is a planet that has two extreme climates and kingdoms. The kingdom to the South is called Fotia and is mainly desert. It has blistering heat. The kingdom to the North is called Pagos and is full of snow and ice. It has freezing temperatures. The citizens of both kingdoms have long since gotten used to the climates. For much of Nero's history the kingdoms of Fotia and Pagos would go to war. This ended 25 years ago because of the Great War. Fotia and Pagos had a war so horrible and bloody it almost destroyed the planet. Children were orphaned and it was hard to find someone who had not lost a least one loved one because of it. Queen Ember of Fotia and King Lars of Pagos called a truce. Both had lost their families and almost their own lives in a war they couldn't even remember why it started. In the Mountains of Mesos, they built the City of Eirini. Built perfectly halfway between both kingdoms, it serves as a peaceful meeting point for the rulers and a place of trade between the kingdoms. Over time the wounds of the past have slowly healed the kingdoms live peacefully with each other until recently.

The trials of the T'brryr, Dayana, and Geoffers were decided The T'brryr and Geoffers were given second chances, while Dayana was banished to Taurus to join Seth for her crimes. Afon (God of Floods and ex lover of Gwynn) decided to get revenge on his ex and her family for not going with his plan of killing Maverik, though. He recruited Dayana and Seth for it...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The coordinates to which Afon directed Dayana and Seth would take them to a barrier island off the coast of the largest landmass on Planet Llyr. The air was crisp and a little damp, but not chilly, and the wind whistled pleasantly through the pine trees. The coastline was peppered with rocky crags, and the nearby beach was formed of small round pebbles, rather than sand. A mountain rose in the distance, jutting into a steep point. Rolling hills at its base led to the pine forest that bordered the water. The visible grass was a pure, brilliant green.

The land was pristine and unspoiled - but clearly not entirely uninhabited, judging by the ancient circle of standing stones in a nearby clearing that hinted at religious rites performed generations ago, and further along the beach the ruins of an old building, now entirely rotted so only stone foundations and the remnants of a stone fence were left.

Afon drew in a deep breath, the sea air a welcome scent after the barrenness of Taurus. He didn't love Llyr. It bored him. Even so, there was an undeniable homey familiarity to the place for him, after hundreds of years as one of the resident gods before his long slumber.

"We're here," Afon announced to Dayana and Seth. "No one will overhear us. This island hasn't had anyone living on it for a hundred years. If we need anything, there are people on the mainland who will be happy to provide for us Firsts, but we can use the island as a place to plan without being disturbed."

It was very tempting for Dayana to dump Seth in a volcano instead of taking him with her to Llyr but she resisted the urge. She could kill him later. After they got revenge on Nero's Firsts and after the Hunter was dead.

"Nice place."

Dayana replied looking around, much nicer then Taurus had been and more pleasant then Nero.

"I take it the people here actually realize we're better then them, right?"

She didn't think Afon would act like humans were his friends, not how the Royal Family and Angel acted around humans.

Depending on Dayana to take him to Llyr had been awful. Seth hated having to ask her for anything. Although he did agree that Llyr was much nicer then Taurus had been. Of course, any place was better then that hell Robin had put him through. He hoped the people around Llyr knew their places. He didn't understand why Nero's Firsts treated humans they way they did. Why act like their opinions mattered when you could just rule over them?

"What's your grand plan for revenge on those other Firsts?"

Seth asked Afon.

Afon

"Thanks," Afon said when Dayana complimented their surroundings. He sounded almost like he was taking credit for it, although he'd had no hand in Llyr coming to be.

He nodded in response to her question. "They worship us and fear us," he replied casually. "No problems there. They'll do what we want to avoid a smiting. It didn't take too many floods and storms to convince their ancestors that the gods must be appeased, and old traditions die hard. Especially when the god shows up again."

Seth's question brought a smile to his face.

"That's what we need to decide," he said. "Obviously, one possibility is to just kill them. I'd rather make them suffer first, though. I'm sure you two must have some ideas for how to cause pain?"

"Good, that's how it should be."

Seth replied with a nod of his head when Afon said the humans worshiped Firsts and feared them. It was good that they knew their place on Llyr, unlike the humans did on Nero.

"Killing them would be too easy and not as enjoyable."

Seth said in agreement. The Firsts of Nero needed to suffer for what they had done and Seth was in favor of causing them pain before ending their lives.

"They're pretty attached to their precious mortals. We could cause some mass chaos among their citizens."

Dayana replied that Afon was welcome and was pleased that Llyr's mortals knew their place in the universe. Mortals were supposed to worship and fear the gods not think they were equal to them. When Seth said they could create some mass chaos on Nero, she replied.

"They would just help their people, although...Selene and Barrett's powers essentially cancel each other out and would create massive flooding if they fought..."

And they did have the God of Floods with them.

"When I fully regain my powers I can create the illusion that Seth and I are them and Afon you could create a massive flood on Nero. We could make their people think that Selene and Barrett trying to destroy their planet and be dictators. Maverik would go after them for it too."

Her original plan had been for the Gods of Fire and Ice to go to war with each other to protect them from Seth. Now, though, they could pretend they were still going to war and going to take Nero down with them.

"That might work."

Seth replied to Dayana's suggestion.

"Although there's the problem with our voices. Your spells can't mimic those and they've probably spoken enough in public that their people know their voices."

Still if they found a way to mimic that, that would cause some big problems for the king and queen of Nero.

"We'd also have to make sure they couldn't stop us...Perhaps Afon should pretend to be Barrett and I'll distract the Firsts another way, in another part of the planet."

He had an armada he controlled, he could provide a distraction in one end of Nero and Afon and Dayana could pretend to attack each other at the other end.

"Yeah, there is that..."

Dayana said with a frown. Although she liked the suggestion of her pretending to fight Afon better. If she fought Seth, she might break character and actually try to kill him. Plus they'd need Afon's powers for the flood. She thought a moment and said.

"There's a First who might help us. His name is Camillus, or at least it was."

For all Dayana knew he could have changed it when he awakened. She hadn't seen him since her last life cycle.

"He can mimic the sounds of anything. Including other people. Although, he'd want something in return for helping."

Camillus never liked doing things for free.

Afon began to grin as Dayana and Seth batted around ideas. This was just his sort of plan.

"That should work well," he said. "We may as well talk to Camillus. It would be really helpful to have his skills, and if the price is too high, we can always say thanks but no thanks. That's a great way to go after Selene and Barrett. I want Gwynn hurt too, though."

Might as well be blunt about that. Dayana knew Gwynn was his ex, and there weren't happy feelings between them.

"Angel is just as bad as the others. We'll have to kill her too. So we need to figure out a way this destroys all four of them, not just the king and queen."

If he could destroy Gwynn's little human boyfriend in the process also, so much the better.

Dayana wasn't truly surprised that Afon wanted Gwynn dead. He might not be saying it, but she was sure the new boyfriend was high on his list too.

"Well, 'Selene' and 'Barrett' could kill Geoffers. He's a traitor and they might have decided they didn't want him a part of their family. Of course, if Camillus is willing to help, we could always have Geoffers break Gwynn's heart too. Saying he decided she wasn't good enough for him."

She was sure Afon wouldn't object to breaking Gwynn's heart in more ways then one.

It was pretty obvious to Seth that Afon hated Gwynn a lot and wanted to make her suffer. Before he had been exiled to Taurus, Seth would have objected to killing Angel, her powers were extremely useful. However, she had drained him, which had prevented him from defending himself against Robin. He wanted her dead, along with her own family, and the Royal Family too.

"I could attack the orphanage. She'd drain herself really fast trying to save the lives of all those little brats of hers. She wouldn't be hard to kill once she's drained."

Afon

"Perfect!" Afon replied, his eyes glinting. "They deserve it. All of them. That'll show Gwynn what she gets for picking a human over a god."

It wasn't that Afon minded Gwynn taking Geoffers to bed. She could do as she liked in her own bedroom, as he'd always done too. No, what mattered was that she actually seemed to prefer Geoffers - and that wounded Afon's pride.

"Attacking the orphanage would make a good diversion, too. Mortals are so sensitive about little brats, especially ones they can feel sorry for. It's pathetic. But it'll work to our advantage."

Angel's powers would have been useful to them... but Afon knew there was no chance she'd help them in the first place. Better to get rid of her before she had a chance to take the other side.

"Let's go see Camillus," Afon said. "The sooner we know one way or the other whether he'll work with us, the better we can plan around him."

Seth smirked when Afon liked the ideas he and Dayana had came up with. Seth was pretty eager to cause a great deal of chaos on Nero and get back at those blasted Firsts that had drained him. He could also tell that it angered Afon that Gwynn preferred her human boyfriend to him.

"Barrett and Selene would probably try to help the brats. Once Gwynn's disposed of, it'll be easier to gang up on them."

Gwynn would probably be too heartbroken that her boyfriend was dead to put up much of fight against Dayana and Afon. Seth figured he could get rid of Angel and the three of them could take out the king and queen. Of course, a lot of this plan depended if Camillus was willing to help or not. Seth agreed they should find him.

Dayana had the feeling that Afon would most look forward to killing Geoffers and hurting Gwynn in the process. That was fine with Dayana, she hated Gwynn but probably not as much as Afon did. Dayana agreed that the king and queen would try to help Angel protect her brats. Although if things worked out the way they were planning, then by the time Selene and Barrett tried to help, Gwynn and Angel would be dead and it would three against two. Seeing as Selene was pregnant, Barrett would probably try to protect her as much as possible and the three of them should be able to kill them both.

"Camillus' home world is called Naga. It's not far from here. He's a shapeshifter."

Which if he was willing to help, he could assume any form he wanted and make their plan much smoother.

Afon

Afon nodded, trying to contain his growing excitement. This was actually going to work, he thought. His carefully planned scheme had gone awry before, as had his attempt to convince the other Firsts of the obvious utility of killing the Hunter... but surely those setbacks were just flukes. This time, it was going to work. He couldn't wait to see the expression on Gwynn's face when "Geoffers" told her she wasn't good enough for him after all. That would teach her a fine lesson about putting a mortal before the god she could have had.

"I'll meet you on Naga," he said. Then, reluctantly - since he wasn't used to giving away control - he added, "I think I'd better let you do the talking at first, since you actually know him and I'm a stranger."

He teleported to the coordinates they gave him for Naga, and instantly began to feel a vague sense of the presence of the person he sought.

Dayana was sure that control was something that Afon didn't like to give up and nodded her head that she'd do the talking on Naga. She teleported herself and Seth there. Naga wasn't far from Llyr but it's climate was different. A majority of Naga was made of rain forests. Camillus often didn't appear in a human form. When they arrived in the jungle and began the search, a black jaguar watched the trio of Firsts from his resting spot on a branch. Dayana looked up and told the feline.

"I know it's you, Camillus."

The black jaguar jumped and landed effortlessly on his paws in front of them.

"How is that, my dear?"

"Because your eyes always give you away."

She replied, the jaguar seemed to smile. He didn't feel like changing his appearance and asked.

"What are you doing with him? I thought you want to kill him."

Camillus asked, nodded his head to Seth.

"I do but I'm patient. There are other gods I hate more in the universe more then him right now."

Dayana replied with a smile and Camillus accepted her response.

"Actually that's why I'm here."

"Oh? I thought you just wanted to stroke my fur."

Camillus teased and Dayana rolled her eyes. She told him about the gods on Nero and the revenge she, Seth, and Afon wanted to get on them. Camillus didn't seem too impressed.

"They haven't done anything to me."

He didn't see the point of getting in involved in anything and making enemies.

"Perhaps not but Maverik will eventually come after you. He wants all the First dead."

Dayana replied and Camillus looked like he was thinking about it and asked.

"What's in it for me?"

"You'd be making sure that the Hunter doesn't kill you."

"You know I need more than that, Dayana."

Seth could tell that Afon was trying to control his excitement at their revenge plans. Seth was getting a little excited about it himself. He couldn't wait to make those gods on Nero pay for what they had done to him and to get rid of the Hunter. Then he could focus on his own goals. Domination of the universe and murdering Dayana. Soon he wouldn't need the witch to teleport him anywhere. When Camillus approached them as a black jaguar, Seth let Dayana do the talking. He didn't truly blame the shape shifting god for not saying yes right away. There wasn't much in it for him but they would need his help.

"What can we offer to persuade you into helping?"

Seth asked when knowing Maverik was dead wasn't enough to have the god say yes.

Camillus started to lick one of his paws.

"I suppose you'd better think of something. Because..."

He suddenly morphed into a very colorful parrot and said in a perfect mimic of Seth's voice.

"...I don't work for free."

Dayana thought a moment and told him.

"You know there is lots of treasure on Nero. The Royal Family calls palaces homes and they are full of treasures."

Camillus suddenly morphed into a bright red dragon and said in his own voice.

"Well...I do like treasure."

Although he wasn't hundred percent on board with the idea yet. So far he had been off the Hunter's radar and wanted to keep it that way. He turned to Afon and asked him.

"How do you plan to kill the Hunter?"

Afon

"It won't be easy," Afon admitted.

His original plan had just been to get together a group of Firsts and overwhelm the Hunter with sheer numbers. It probably would have worked, he thought... except that Nero's Firsts knew too much and had probably already warned Maverik of his intentions. His scheme had relied on Maverik not seeing the attack coming, so it would need to be modified.

"The Hunter is strong, but he's no god," Afon said. "He has one weakness I can see that we might be able to put to good use. Maverik has fast reflexes and can get himself to another location quickly, but neither ability is instantaneous. We'll need to lure him into an ambush, and then throw everything we have at him too quickly for him to have a chance to retaliate. If we take him by surprise, we can get the jump on him and get the upper hand."

With a small smile, he added, "In fact, I think we can kill two birds with one stone on that, in connection with our other plan."

Mass slaughter of humans would attract the Hunter's attention - and they had an attack on Nero on the agenda anyway. They just needed to make sure they were ready for Maverik at the same time.

Killing Maverik actually seemed like a harder task then killing Nero's Firsts. The man had few weaknesses. Camillus wasn't keen to the idea of trying and having it fail. If their plan didn't work then the Hunter would come after him and he enjoyed being alive.

"So you plan to ambush him while you're taking out the other Firsts of Nero?"

Camillus asked a little confused how that would all work. It seemed like a big risk, especially if they would be divided for a short amount of time.

"What do you need me for exactly?"

"We need you to mimic the Royal Family's voices."

"To do that, I actually need to hear them speak before we do this."

Camillus replied, speaking in Dayana's voice. His powers allowed him to mimic any type of voice he heard but he didn't remember the gods of Nero and he'd have to hear them speak before he could talk just like them.

"I do have an entire army at my beck and call. That will keep the Hunter and most of Nero's Firsts busy for a little while."

Seth's army was created from his own powers and he could create as many soldiers as he wanted. Once they were alive, they had enough free will to be able to carry out his orders.

"Plus Gwynn will be too upset to put much of a fight."

After what they had planned to do to her and boyfriend, Seth didn't think that it would take long for Dayana and Afon to kill the Goddess of Storms and come to the orphanage to assist him in killing the other Firsts. A large attack on Eirini would draw out the Hunter.

"The army will definitely help," Afon agreed. "Even the Hunter won't be able to stand forever against that. We can wear him down before we ever get near him... if not kill him outright. Besides, the only Firsts we really have to worry about are Barrett and Selene. Angel's powers are mostly healing - she'd have to get close to you to drain you. Gwynn is barely a goddess at all. Her powers are weak, and won't get stronger because she gave her amulet away. Between the four of us, we can take them easily."

He added to Camillus, "And you can have all the treasure you want."

"They're really rich."

Dayana told Camillus, which made his eyes light up.

"I don't have to get directly involved in the fighting. I help you trick them and I get their treasures but that's all that I have to do."

If this blew up in their faces then he definitely didn't want to be on the radar of their enemies and especially not Maverik's. He'd help trick them but he wouldn't be involved in the actual killing. Besides they might not need him since Seth seemed pretty confident in his army. Dayana wasn't sure and looked over at Afon.

"Your plan, your call."

"Fine," Afon said. "We don't need him to fight." He turned to Camillus and added, "We have a deal. Treasure payable on delivery of services rendered."

It didn't make sense to put their shapeshifter on the front lines anyway. With Seth's army, they would have plenty of bodies in the fight, and Camillus would be more useful elsewhere anyway - so Afon didn't really feel like he was giving up anything by agreeing to those terms. "Seth and I will need a little more time to heal before we can attack Nero."

Her powers hadn't fully returned and she knew at full power what Seth's army was capable of. She had fought against it a few times over the centuries. Camillus spoke up and said.

"That's fine. I still need learn these people's voices."

He said in his own voice and Dayana asked.

"How do you plan to do that?"

Firsts could sense each other and if they found out about Camillus that would ruin everything, he morphed into a mouse.

"I'll be as quiet as a mouse."

"Well, it's good they don't have a cat then."

Dayana replied and Camillus morphed for once into his human form. He looked like a teenage boy with shaggy light brown hair.

"Neat trick," Afon said when Camillus shifted forms, but he wasn't really too impressed. It was a showy power if you liked that sort of thing, but Afon's mind had already moved on to important strategic matters.

"I can't teleport you to Nero," he said. "The Hunter will be keeping an eye out for me, and we don't want to bring him down on us prematurely. Can you teleport yourself? If not, Dayana or Seth will have to take you."

Since Maverik presumably didn't know Dayana and Seth were involved, there was less chance he would notice anything amiss if he perceived their energy on the planet, unlike Afon's.

"We should get started right away," he added, using the sort of 'we' that really meant he was telling Camillus to get busy. "The sooner we move, the less chance we get interrupted before we see this thing through."

Camillus didn't think that Afon really thought his powers were impressive. Not many of the Firsts did, not unless they wanted something in return. Like these three wanted. He didn't remember ever being on Nero and he had nothing against the Firsts who lived there. Although Maverik was a problem, Cam preferred being alive. It was kill or be killed in the jungles in Naga and Cam felt it was the same in the universe. Since Camillus viewed Maverik as a threat to his well being, he was willing to help Afon, Dayana, and Seth get revenge on Nero's Firsts. Plus he never objected much to treasure. It might seem petty to some gods but Cam preferred animal forms to his youthful looking form. The longer he stayed in an animal form, the more he took on the characteristics of that animal. He especially liked being a dragon because dragons were powerful but they also tended to hoard treasure. He told Afon.

"I can teleport myself and it won't take me long."

He only need to hear the Royal Family talk for a little while to be able to perfectly mimic their voices. Teleporting was a minor power and since he was going to assume the form a mouse, it wouldn't take much of his energy. Not like being a dragon did. Dayana was glad that Camillus didn't need assistance getting to Nero. She didn't want anyone to know she had escaped from Taurus if she could avoid it.

"Good, meet us on Llyr when you're done."

She told Cam how to find Llyr after telling him which part of Nero to go to. He morphed into a mouse and teleported himself to the palace in Eirini to do some recon.

When Camillus arrived in the villa at Eirini, he realized he probably should have asked for more of a description of the people he was supposed to mimic the voices of. Selene and Barrett were the rulers, they wouldn't be hard to find, but he had no idea who Geoffers was. Other then that he was a loser human. Not much to go on when he was in a place full of humans that worked for the Royal Family. He quietly made his way through the halls, the place was huge and as mouse, it felt almost overwhelming. He was tempted to morph into a larger animal but the Firsts who called this place home would be more likely to detect his presence. All the walking around made him hungry and he found the kitchen. The cooks were busy making lunch and a grin appeared on his little mouse face when one of the women dropped some food on the floor. She was a good cook but always left a pretty messy kitchen. Other people would tease her that she dropped as much food as she cooked. Cam followed her around and ate what she dropped. It was going well until another woman grabbed a broom to clean up the mess and saw him.

"Mouse!"

She screamed at Cam and tried to smack Cam with the broom. He ran fast as he could on little mouse legs to get away from her. He didn't want to die at her hands anymore then he wanted to die at Maverik's. She chased after him but Cam found a way to avoid her. One of the guards was dating the messy cook and wanted to get some free food. He had just came in the kitchen and Cam ran through his legs. The woman with the broom was running so fast she didn't have time to stop and ran smack into the guard, knocking them both to floor and giving Cam a chance to escape. He ran through the halls and when he felt he had put enough distance between himself and broom of death, he stopped and leaned against the wall.

"That was close."

He said out loud to himself in a very tiny and quiet voice. He needed to find the Royal Family and after catching his breath, he set out again. Although he didn't get too far when he saw Lizard Dog.

Lizard Dog and Gwynn

Lizard Dog had not been born to palace life. He was a mutt who had lived on the streets before Gwynn found him. Now he ate his food out of a dish by the table, but he used to live on scraps and small creatures... much like the mouse skittering across the floor. He gave an excited little yip, and started chasing Cam down the hall. Lizard Dog wasn't really hungry, though. He'd had plenty to eat today. Some instinct long suppressed in his extremely mixed up ancestry told him that rather than eating this thing, he was supposed to bring it to Gwynn.

His jaws closed lightly around Cam, picking him up but not biting down, and he trotted off to find his owner... who was coming down the corridor in the other direction, limping slightly.

"What do you have?" Gwynn asked, kneeling in front of her dog. "Drop it! Good boy."

She gently cupped the mouse in her hands, firmly enough so he wouldn't get away, but without crushing him. "I'll just take you out into the garden and let you go... hey! You're a First!"

Gwynn had been too distracted to notice that right away, but when she touched Cam, she could sense what he was. What she didn't know was that he was a shapeshifter. When Gwynn had been a lizard, she was just a lizard, so she assumed that Camillus was just a mouse.

Camillus let out a loud squeak at Lizard Dog in response to the excited yelp and ran the other direction. If he could have morphed into something else, then he easily could have avoided the dog. It was tempting to do it anyway but the point of being here was so people didn't know he was here. A mouse suddenly turning into a bird would get everyone's attention and that wasn't how he planned to learn the voices of people here.

"Let me go, you big mutt."

Cam grumbled at Lizard Dog and tried to hit him in vain with tiny mouse paws when the dog scooped him up and decided to take him to his owner. Cam had no idea which First Gwynn was but when she touched him, he realized she was one of the First too. He wasn't sure what he should say, he didn't expect to actually encounter any of the Firsts on this little mission. So instead of speaking, he just squeaked in response. Selene had heard what happened in the kitchen and was surprised to find Gwynn holding a mouse.

"Who do you have here? I wonder if he's the little mouse causing all the problems in the kitchen."

Gwynn nodded, and told her sister, "I think he's the same mouse. He's not just a mouse, though. He's a First. I guess he started out as a mouse, just like I started as a lizard."

She raised Cam on her hands so he was looking her in the eye, and said, "Don't worry. We won't hurt you. You can stay with us."

Since she no longer believed the mouse was really an animal, she had relaxed her grip, assuming that Camillus would remain voluntarily.

"He must have."

Selene said with a nod of her head. Now that she was close to Camillus, she could sense he was one of the First. Perhaps many Firsts started out as animals. Selene wondered if in a past life she had as well, although she didn't remember any life she had lived except this one.

"Gwynn's right, you can stay with us."

Selene didn't think the little mouse god meant them any harm. Cam could tell both the sisters meant it. If Gwynn had wanted him hurt, she would have just let her dog eat him. He probably should have just taken the opportunity to run but thought if he stayed for a little while, he could learn the voices of the people he was supposed to. Then he'd just leave. Staying a little while couldn't hurt. Although he wasn't going to let on that he was a shapeshifter yet. It was better to let the Royal Family just think that he was a mouse that was capable of advanced thinking. He nodded his tiny mouse head as a way saying he understood what Gwynn said and that he accepted.

Gwynn smiled. She liked having guests, and it was fun to meet another First who had an animal form.

"It's almost supper time," she said. "You can come with us. Then you can meet everybody, and you won't have to scare the cook by trying to take food from the kitchen."

She carried Camillus to the dining room, and set him on the table. As was often the case, some of the servants and some of the clay soldiers would be joining them for the meal. People had at first tried to explain to Gwynn that it wasn't customary for royals and their employees to eat together, but it had become clear that Gwynn was never going to understand why not because she was unable to grasp the concept of social hierarchy, so they eventually just went along with her wishes when she insisted that they take a break from their work and join the family.

Gwynn took her seat between Geoffers and Garnet, and introduced everyone to Cam by name - she knew all the household staff and the names the clay soldiers had given themselves - but then added about Camillus, "I don't know what his name is. Since he's a mouse. Um... can you talk human language at all?"

She hadn't been able to communicate by speech when she was a lizard, so she wasn't necessarily expecting that he could.

Camillus was feeling hungry again, running from the woman with the broom and Lizard Dog had worked up an appetite. He squeaked that supper sounded good and was surprised he was allowed to sit at the table. He was also surprised that for royalty, commoners were allowed to sit with them. The servants and guards had tried to object at first but Selene and Barrett had taken Gwynn's side about meal times. Neither thought they were better then the people who worked for them either. He was glad he accepted the dinner invitation since Barrett and Geoffers were there and he could learn their voices too. Although his eyes got wide seeing Garnet. She was very pretty. She looked like a younger version of Gwynn but she seemed to be like the clay soldiers that were with them. He bit his lip when Gwynn asked if he could speak human language, he could but he didn't think them knowing that would be a good idea. Especially since it was supposed to be a very short stay and Afon, Dayana, and Seth wanted all these people dead. He shook his head but he felt they might as well know his name. One of the dishes on the table was spaghetti noddles and sauce to put on. He grabbed the noddles and spelled out "Cam". He pointed to it and squeaked that was his name. The woman who had chased him with the broom said.

"Good thing I didn't squash him then, he's a pretty smart mouse."

Gwynn was impressed when Cam spelled out his name. So he was different from when she'd been a lizard, after all - when Gwynn was a lizard, she'd only had lizard skills, and wouldn't have been able to write anything. Apparently Cam-as-mouse was more versed in human abilities. That was good to know.

"Nice to meet you, Cam," she said with a smile.

She nodded agreement with the cook, and replied, "Yes, he is. I don't think he's just a mouse. He's... our relative, in a way. Like... a cousin, I guess? Because he's a First too."

Gwynn beamed at Cam, making sure he knew he was welcome in the family.

Geoffers and Barrett weren't surprised that Gwynn would invite a mouse god to supper but they were both surprised that Cam knew enough to spell his own name.

"That is pretty impressive."

Geoffers agreed with the cook that Cam was definitely not an ordinary mouse. He wondered if perhaps Camillus' awakening was similar to what Gywnn's had been as a lizard. Barrett smiled when Gwynn said Cam was like a cousin to them since he was another First. Barrett could also sense that the little mouse was a god as well.

Camillus gave Gwynn a smile when he said it was nice to meet him. Although he did feel a little sting of guilt when everyone was impressed that he could spell his name. It wasn't that impressive since he was a shapeshifter and quite capable of holding a conversation with them if he wanted to. They all seemed so nice...Much nicer then Dayana and her "allies" were. He and Dayana had never truly been friends but she had saved him once, a life time ago, and in a way, he owed her a debt. She hadn't brought it up in front of Seth or Afon but she would hold him up to that debt if she wanted to. Plus he had already said yes...It was too late to back out now. He quietly ate the food and tried to ignore the guilt that was forming in the back of his mind.

As she always did at meals, Gwynn did her best to make sure she talked to everyone and included people in the conversation. It was hard, though, to know how to do that with a mouse who didn't speak the same language as the humans. She asked him a few yes or no questions about how he was enjoying the meal, and hoped that would make him feel welcome.

Garnet was very curious about the newcomer, and less trusting than Gwynn was. The other Firsts who had shown up recently had been evil, and although Cam seemed harmless, you couldn't be too sure.

"Have you been on Nero for long?" Garnet asked Cam conversationally.

Camillus replied with nods of his head or squeaks that he was enjoying his meal. He didn't really see why Afon wanted Gwynn dead so much, she was a very kind by human standards and her family was kind by First standards. No one in the Royal Family acted like they were better then people that served them. That was rare for human royalty and most Firsts acted like humans should worship the ground they walk on. These people were more refreshing to be around then the Firsts that he knew and remembered from the past. When Garnet asked if he had been on Nero long, Cam shook his head no.

"I see," Garnet said. "It seems like all kinds of Firsts are coming to Nero these days."

Garnet wished she could ask why he had come, but she didn't see how he could answer that with the communication abilities he seemed to have.

Gwynn hastily said, "I'm sure you're different than them, though, Cam. I mean, you're eating with us instead of trying to kill us. That's a plus, right?"

She gave Geoffers' hand a squeeze under the table, for no real reason other than the heck of it. Sometimes she still couldn't believe they'd found each other, or that she could be as happy with someone as she was with him. They seemed to fit together so naturally. In spite of all that had gone on around them, Gwynn knew she had found a good thing. She hoped nothing would ever happen to change that.

It seemed to Camillus that Garnet had more questions on her mind. He was glad she didn't ask them, though. These were nice people and he didn't want to lie to them...Not more then he had already. He nodded his head when Gwynn said it was a plus he was eating with them, not killing them. He quickly looked down at the cheese in front of him and focused on eating it. That way no one saw the guilt on his furry face that he was supposed to help their enemies kill them. It hadn't been a problem agreeing to it until he had actually spent time with these people. Now...He'd better leave soon. Especially since he caught Geoffers squeezing Gwynn's hand back. They appeared to be in love and Cam felt bad that Dayana and Afon wanted him to mimic Geoffers' voice and have him break Gwynn's heart. She was very nice and her siblings seemed to be too. He also felt bad when he saw Selene laugh and grab Barrett's hand to feel their baby kick. Afon, Dayana, and Seth wanted them dead before the baby was born...He sighed as he wasn't sure what he was supposed to do.

When dinner was over, the family spent some more time talking, then adjourned to their separate bedrooms for the evening. That raised the question of where Cam should sleep. If he'd been an actual animal, he could have slept in someone's room, like Lizard Dog slept beside Geoffers and Gwynn's bed. Since Cam was a First, though, and fully sentient, it wouldn't be comfortable for anyone if there was a lack of privacy.

Garnet said, "I'll take him to one of the spare bedrooms and set up a place for him."

She made him a bed in a box with some some soft towels and handkerchiefs, and left another box full of shredded paper on the other side of the room for his toilet needs. She set out a small bowl of water and some crackers in case he got thirsty or hungry.

Then she asked, "Do you need anything else?"

Camillus had heard Geoffers, Barrett, and Selene's voices long enough to know what they sound like and easily be able to mimic them. Actually he could have left right after dinner but he found himself not wanting to. These people truly cared and loved each other. It made him feel guilty...Why couldn't he found people like this, instead of people like Dayana and her allies? He looked at the nice little bed Garnet made him and couldn't shake the guilt. She and her family had been so nice to him and he was going to stab them in the back...Of course, they wouldn't even know it was him. His condition for the mimicking wasn't to be involved in the fights and he wouldn't return as a mouse...He shook his head when Garnet asked if he needed more. He didn't actually need any of this. He was tired but he could have still teleported to Llyr. He found himself not wanting to, though. The longer he stayed here, the longer he pretend he was a part of this happy family and keep Dayana, Seth, and Afon from hurting them. He motioned for Garnet to bend down, though, and kissed her hand as a way of saying thank you. He then curled up in the little bed. Hoping his guilty mind wouldn't keep him up all night.

Garnet smiled when Cam kissed her hand. "That was nice," she said. "Thanks."

No one had really done anything like that before. It was a pleasant gesture, and she tried not to delve too deeply into why, because it would touch on a sore nerve. Garnet knew she would never receive that sort of gesture from someone who was romantically interested in her. Not when she would always look sixteen. What man would be comfortable in a relationship with her? She didn't blame them, and most of the time she didn't mind. Moments like this made her think that maybe she wasn't going to miss out completely, even if these little moments didn't come packaged with the rest of a relationship.

Camillus thought Garnet had a pretty smile and squeaked that she was welcome and good night. He was more tired then he realized. His plan was to sleep a few hours and then go to Llyr. Be gone before anyone woke up. That didn't happen. One problem with his powers was that he could only maintain his animal forms when he was awake. When was sleep, he'd revert back to his true form. He had broken the box sleeping and was still fast asleep on the floor when a maid was coming in to check on him. She figured that his toilet area would need cleaned. Cam was a mouse but he was a guest of the Royal Family and deserved the same treatment any other guest did. She knocked on the door before opening and started to say.

"Sir Cam, I-"

She screamed when she found in place of a little mouse a young man who looked forever about sixteen years old on the floor.

"Oh, no..."

Cam muttered to himself sitting up. This wasn't supposed to happen. He was supposed to be long hone before anyone else got up. Her scream had surely woken up the rest of the palace.

Gwynn and Garnet had come running when they heard screams, fearful that the palace was under attack - only to find themselves facing Cam's bare behind. Both sisters looked away until he'd returned to modesty with the sheet.

Garnet was still blushing, but Gwynn smiled and said sympathetically, "I know it must be confusing for you. I used to be a lizard. You'll get used to your new form. We'll help you adjust. Try not to worry."

Finally, Garnet looked up and met his eyes too. It wasn't so much that he'd been naked as that the new Cam was kind of cute - and he even looked her age now, although she wasn't sure if he'd stay that way. "Yes, we'll help," she agreed.

Perhaps if he wasn't so embarrassed it would have hit him that she was cute blushing. Right now, though, he just wanted to disappear. He could do that but had a feeling these people would follow him. He couldn't have them finding out about his little alliance with their enemies. What was he going to do about that? Dayana was going to be so...Cam looked up at Garnet and suddenly didn't really care how angry Dayana was at him. Garnet sure was cute...

"I...umm...I appreciate that..."

Cam replied when Garnet agreed with her sister they would help adjust to what they thought was his new form. He wasn't sure they would be much help. "Sounds like a good idea."

He waved his hand and a woman with ivory skin and long black hair and dark eyes appeared. She was wearing a necklace that had a large ruby pendant.

"Demi, go see what is taking the God of Mimicking so long to complete his mission on Nero."

"Yes, master."

Demi replied and Seth created her a portal to go to Nero. He told Afon and Dayana.

"She'll find him soon and if she runs into trouble, that ruby will make her self destruct."

Garnet

"Sure, I'd like that," Garnet said. "We have a funeral to go to later, but I could start showing you around a little first."

The royal family had been attending the funerals of all of Afon's victims. Some of the people had been their servants, so it was only appropriate that they be there - and for others, they were just showing support for the family. Spending some time showing Cam around would keep Garnet from focusing on the sadness of those deaths all day, since there was nothing to be gained by dwelling on it and being morose.

It should be relatively safe if they stuck close to the palace; she'd been practicing with the crossbow Maverik gave her, and had become a fairly good shot. Garnet knew that any thought of a relationship with Cam was premature, but she thought she would enjoy his company. There was nothing wrong with making a new friend.

Afon

Afon looked Demi up and down. Not bad. If she survived her mission, he wondered if he could convince her that the gods would be pleased if she spent some time in his bed.

"Fine," he replied. "Just get him back here. We have work to do, and the more time we waste, the more chance that the Hunter or those idiot Firsts will catch on and ruin the whole thing."

Seth caught the appreciative look Afon gave Demi. When Seth felt like creating a female soldier, they always did turn out rather attractive.

"She's a tracker, she'll find him. And even if she fails, I have plenty more where she came from."

Seth told Afon. He could easily create more soldiers now that his powers had fully returned.

"Great."

Camillus replied with a grin when Garnet said she could give him a tour. Although his grin quickly disappeared when she said they had a funeral to go to.

"Oh? Why is that? Did someone in your family die?"

He asked her curiously. He had no idea what Afon had done on Nero before he, Dayana, and Seth had went to Naga to find him. Nor did he realize that the Firsts of Nero didn't view themselves as better then the humans that shared their world. Cam didn't really think he was better then mortals but he was more humble then some Firsts. He was used to being told his powers were useless and being made fun for looking like a kid forever.

Garnet

Garnet shook her head. "It's no one related to us," she said. "Another First named Afon came to this planet. He wanted us to break our truce with Maverik - the Hunter - and help kill him instead, but we refused. So Afon tried to play us against Maverik instead, and he killed a lot of humans in the process. We had no way to save them, but we feel like the least we can do is pay our respects. Some of them were our servants at the palace in Fotia, but the guy whose funeral is today wasn't. He ran a vegetable stand. We never met him when he was alive. Now that he's dead, we want to show his family that we care and we're sad too."

Afon

When Demi had gone through the portal, Afon asked Seth quietly but without shame, "When you're finished with her, can I have her?"

With her pale skin and dark hair, Demi reminded Afon of Gwynn. Their facial features and builds were entirely different, but in the dark the two women would be close enough for his purposes.

Afon wasn't the type to physically force himself on a woman - not because he was morally above it, but because being desired by the opposite sex appealed to his ego, and his ego was even more important to him than bodily gratification. If he could convince Demi that spending a mutually pleasant night with him was the will of the gods, though... well, he wasn't opposed to that idea at all.

"That's horrible."

Camillus replied when Garnet told him what Afon had done. Afon didn't seem like the type of guy who liked being told no. Not by Firsts to help him kill Maverik or by his ex who didn't want him back. Cam looked down and realized he should have actually thought out what he was agreeing to before he had said yes. He personally had nothing against humans and saw no point of killing them just to get back at someone else.

"That's very kind of you and your siblings to do. I'll make sure you don't miss the funeral."

He wanted to spend more time with Garnet but it was obvious that the funeral was important for her and her family to go, even if they had never known the man when he was alive.

"Yeah, sure."

Seth replied to Afon when he asked if he could have Demi. Seth had plenty of soldiers, he didn't mind letting Afon "borrow" one for a little while. Seth noticed that Dayana just rolled her eyes at them and went back to sunning herself. He didn't care what the cold witch thought either. Soon Nero's Firsts and the Hunter would be dead and they could move on with their lives. He could get back to trying to kill Dayana instead of having to tolerate her. Demi was easily able to find Camillus. Seth had infused her with his memories of Nero and she found it curious that Garnet was alive when she was supposed to be dead. She decided to follow them on their tour for a little while before she'd approach Cam and tell him that his vacation was over. No need for one of their enemies to get wind of the plan.

Gwynn and Garnet

Garnet agreed, "We don't want to miss it. We won't have to, though. It's still a few hours away. I'll show you around in the meantime. There's not much point sitting around thinking grim thoughts."

Gwynn nodded her agreement. She felt bad about what had happened - and she still felt somewhat responsible because Afon had singled her out for his plan - but she didn't think the people who had died would want them to wallow in grief. Surely the dead would want more than anything for the living to live their lives, since the dead couldn't anymore.

The Goddess of Storms smiled as she watched Garnet and Cam walk away to begin their tour. They had just met, so it was too soon to see where things would go, but Gwynn hoped they'd find happiness together. Now that she had found Geoffers, Gwynn hoped that her twin would find someone who brought her just as much joy.

Garnet showed Cam around the area of Eirini near their villa - since they were on somewhat of a schedule, it made sense to stick close by. Eventually the bell tower rang out the hour when Garnet had said she would come home. She'd had a good time with Cam, and selfishly she was sorry to see it end. She would never forgive herself for missing the funeral, though. Cam wasn't going anywhere, anyway; they'd surely have plenty of other opportunities.

"That was fun," Garnet said as they parted ways back at the palace. "There's a lot more to see, though. I hope we can do this again soon."

Camillus agreed that there wasn't much point of just sitting around and having grim thoughts. Cam had a good time on the tour of Eirini, even if they had stayed close to Garnet's home. Going to the funeral meant a lot to Garnet and her family and Cam wanted to make sure she didn't miss it. Time had went too fast and talking to her one on one, without her siblings near by, made Cam realize he definitely had a crush on Garnet. Which was stupid since he'd be leaving and the next time he was on Nero was to help kill her family. He'd never have a chance with her but his heart wasn't listening to the logic his brain was telling it. He wished now he had never agreed to take part in that plan now. It was too late to back out though...The bell tower ran and Cam walked Garnet back to the villa. He smiled at her and said.

"I had fun too. See you later."

He told her and wondered why the hell he had said that. Now was the perfect time to leave but he didn't want to leave. He wasn't naive to think he could stay on Nero forever, though. He couldn't avoid Afon, Dayana, and Seth forever either. None of them would risk coming to Nero when they were hunted by gods like that always had people to do their dirty work. In fact, he was certain someone had been following him. Cam watched Garnet head inside and turned around.

"I know you're there. What do you want?"

Demi

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll145/sojournfan/demi.jpg

Demi knew her master and his allies would be very interested to know that the Pretender Goddess was still alive. Demi only thought of Dayana and Afon as Seth's temporary allies, they were not his friends. They were working together for now because they all had a common goal. Once Nero's Firsts were dead, however, Seth would go back to wanting to kill Dayana and he wouldn't care what Afon did as long as the God of Floods' interests didn't interfere with his own. Demi had watched Camillus and Garnet from a distance. Tracking them but not interfering with their little tour. People who were aware of the Firsts, would sense that she was a creation of the God of Chaos. While not a First herself, Demi and every soldier in Seth's army had a small part of his power. The last thing her master would want was for Garnet to tell her family that Seth was still around. She watched Garnet enter the villa and approached Cam when he called her out.

"My master and his allies demand your presence on Llyr. They feel you have taken too long on your mission."

Camillus had a feeling that Demi called Seth her master. She had an aura around her that suggested she was associated with the God of Chaos. He sighed in his mind, so much for getting to stick around here.

"Let's go then. I couldn't get away earlier."

He said, not a total lie either. Gwynn and Lizard Dog had found him when he was a mouse, so he couldn't teleport away then. In the morning, he had been found before he could leave again. He looked back at the villa with some regret and teleported to Llyr with Demi. As soon as he arrived, Dayana told him.

"About time you showed up. What took you so long?"

"They found me, I had to play nice or it would make them suspicious."

Actually the Royal Family of Nero was much nicer then these guys but Cam didn't offer that up. Dayana seemed to accept that answer though.

"We did! We ripped out her heart. Of course...She's not a real person. They probably found some other-"

Cam took offense to Dayana claiming that Garnet wasn't really a person just because Pembrooke had created her from clay instead of her being born to someone. She had thoughts and feelings. She was a real person to her family and to him.

"She is real!...To them, I mean."

Cam said when Dayana turned her head and gave him a look for his outburst.

"Right..."

Dayana replied, not fully believing him. She motioned at Cam to follow her to the water and told him.

"Cam, I hope you haven't forgotten what I did for you."

"Like I could forget..."

Cam replied dryly. She was never, ever going to let him forget that not long after they had awakened she had saved him from another First. Brutus, the God of Shadows, had not taken kindly to a joke Cam had made about him at his expense back on Naga. Brutus had made fun of Cam's youthful experience and Cam had decided to make fun of everything else he could about Brutus. The God of Shadows didn't have much of a sense of humor, though. He had tried to kill Cam until Dayana stepped in and saved his life. He hadn't remembered her then but she had said they had been allies in a past life. He asked how he could repay her and Dayana replied that someday she'd cash in the favor. This was that time.

"...I said I'd help and I will."

"Even if I wish I hadn't now..." Cam thought grimly. Dayana nodded her head.

"Good. Let's go back to Afon and Seth to strategize."

Cam nodded his head but wasn't looking forward to this at all now. Treasure wasn't worth getting nice people killed. Treasure wasn't worth hurting someone he could have cared deeply about if he had met her at another time and place.

Afon

Afon was tired of waiting and talking about attacking. He wanted to just attack. Although Afon was capable of some degree of scheming, he preferred to come up with the skeleton of a plan, and then just do it. Like the floods he controlled, he could only be held back so long. And now, he was sick of standing here on Llyr speaking over and over about what they were going to do.

"We have a plan," he said. "Attack the orphanage to create a diversion and drain them. Use my powers to fake fire and ice fighting. Kill some humans, and lay a trap for the Hunter where we throw loads and loads of soldiers at him till he goes down. Any final thoughts, or can we get moving?"

"Did you want to enjoy Demi's 'company' now or use her later as a 'celebration'?"

"Later," Afon said casually. Demi wasn't actually important to him. She'd be a pleasant diversion if she survived the battle, but it wasn't like he was going to go out of his way to spend time with her. She wasn't even a person; she was only worthy of his time when and if he had nothing better to do.

"We have a battle to fight. Let's win it first, then celebrate our victory."

It would give him something even more than just defeating his enemies to look forward to.

He met Demi's eyes, and told her with a wink, "Later." It didn't even occur to him that she might not be thrilled with the prospect.

Seth would probably do that himself as well when this was over. When Afon winked at her, Demi just looked at him. She didn't react pleased or upset. She, like all of Seth's army, believed that her sole purpose in life was to do what Seth commanded. If he said she was to please his ally, then so be it. Given Afon's hatred for his ex, it was no surprise that the first stop was breaking Gwynn's heart. Camillus didn't like the idea, she was a nice person and not just because she hadn't let her dog eat him. He nodded his head.

"I know. Just make sure you're good at lip syncing."

He said in a perfect mimic of Geoffers' voice. He wasn't as excited as he companions about going to back to Nero. Geoffers and Gwynn might be in love but they didn't feel the need to around each other very moment of the day. Dayana created the illusion that Afon looked like Geoffers and Cam morphed into a bird that was sitting on a tree.

"Gwynn, we need to talk."

Cam said in Geoffers' voice. The real Geoffers was spending time Jared going over history books. Both had a shared interest in Nero's past and Geoffers decided to help Jared write some for school age kids. Cam was glad he was a bird and the feathers would prevent anyone for reading his facial expression. He felt awful and he was sure if he was still in his human form, it would show very well.

Gwynn smiled when she saw Geoffers coming toward her, but the smile quickly faded when she saw his expression. Whatever he wanted to talk about, it obviously wasn't good news. As he spoke, her bafflement and worry grew.

"I don't understand," she said helplessly. "I thought we were happy. You mean... you weren't all along?"

So why had he claimed he was? It couldn't just have been a matter of Gwynn misreading social cues; Geoffers had outright told her before that he was happy being with her. She couldn't figure out why now he was saying the opposite.

"How can I fix it? What can I do better? I can act different, if you tell me what you need."

Gwynn was distressed and confused, but she wasn't just going to give up on her relationship like that because Geoffers had startled her with an unpleasant discussion. (((Weeeell... Time for some stage setting on my part as well.)))

It had been a strange time for Mercy since the trials had begun. She had done her part in relaying information to Grim about the proceedings. They had completely missed the incident with Geoffers, Gwynn, and the others, since they had not been in the villa at the time. Grim had gotten the impression that Afon, although a coward, was not the sort to give up easily. He decided that perhaps it would be best to be near the villa so that, if and when Afon returned, he could be there to help. They moved into one of the empty rooms with no fanfare, and Grim took on the role as a general from Pagos who had come to help with security. Of course, Grim suspected that most of the guards knew better, and he had expressed some concern with her that some of the guards probably recognized them in some way. Still, no one had actually said anything, and she thought perhaps Grim was just being extra cautious.
She did feel bad for Mad Mikey, however. Grim had insisted that Mikey not join them. Grim had disguised himself as a Pagos guard before, both in Pagos and in Eirini, but it was really hard to forget or ignore someone with a sword sticking out of his back, and there would certainly be questions asked. That was not a position that he wanted either themselves, or the royals, to be in. They all had enough problems without worrying about his past sins coming to call, he had said. Mercy had disagreed with him, saying that if the people had forgiven the others, they would forgive Grim as well. But Grim would not hear it. That was his problem; he could never simply accept forgiveness. He could talk about redemption and making things right, or paying for his crimes, but there was something about simple forgiveness that he found difficult to accept. Oh, he could forgive others, and was ready to do so often; but, and it was startling when she realized it, he could not forgive himself. She determined that she would have to talk to him about it, when the time was right. That was another problem; the time never seemed right.
She was busy helping with the laundry at the orphanage. There was always a bit of laundry that needed doing, and it was not one of the favored chores. Mercy did not mind it, though, as she was always willing to help however she could. Although, it did reminded her that perhaps it was time to wash her own white frock. Well, nearly white frock. Well... It really would benefit from a washing. Perhaps she could ask Angel if she could borrow something to wear while she washed her own clothes. They were nearly the same height and same weight, although their build was... different. Not that it would be a problem, but it always made Mercy feel a little self-conscious whenever she thought about it. "Besides," she quietly told herself, as she did every time the though arose, "They would probably just get in the way of dancing."

---

Grim was not very happy about the arrangements of pretending to be a guard, even if it was a high-ranking one. His days were very much like they had been as barbarian lord; running drills, running exercises, yelling at men, although not in the same fashion. It was the waiting that he hated. Grim did no good on the defensive; he much rather be on the attack. But he had missed the last two events, even though they had been in the villa when Garnet was attacked. He had been asleep, and had left the villa before he had learned what had happened. It was now his business to check in at breakfast (although he did not eat with them except on regular guard rotation, and even then he acted like just another soldier) to make sure that everyone was still alive from the night before. Of course, it was not like he could have done any thing to help Garnet anyway, and he was afraid that there was little he could do to help as it were. But he would go down swinging at ghost before he would let some god get the better of him by dishonourable tactics.
He was sitting in one of the guard houses today composing letters. He had received word back from several of his contacts in Pagos and in Fotia that nothing unusual had been happening. People in Pagos were still cleaning up from the invasion of the whatdya-call'ems, Tibriars or something like that, and Fotia was relatively uneventful. One of the lords had taken to keeping things in order while Barrett was gone, and arrangements were being made to segment a portion of his own land for the habitation of the Tibriars, or whatever. Apparently, this was the same lord that had made power grabs in the past, and Grim wondered if this was another move. But word was that he was completely ceding the land to the creatures and the king, not holding fealty over it. Grim shrugged it off, since it seemed to have nothing to do with Janus. He wanted his contacts to begin looking closer into the religious circles of the cities. Janus was a god, after all; perhaps he had some worshipers tucked away somewhere. He felt it was a long shot, but he had to do something offensively. Waiting for the next unknown attack was not something he handled well.

---

Maverik was busy in his ship. He had been alerted to Cam's presence, naturally, but as long as this first did not intend to start trouble, he could be persuaded to ignore him for the moment. Janus was far too important right now. He was currently working on a teleportation inhibitor. It would have been easier on a planet with more advanced technology, but the standard he had to go by was making it quite difficult. Circuitry and electronics were unheard of. UE-powered devices were equally foreign to most of the populace, in spite of the high resonance of UE on the planet. He figured he could cheat a little here, chalking it up to "divine intervention." Natural materials were scarce, though, and he had been forced to resort to scavenging materials from the ocean floor. Magnetics, however, were a field that was known, and he was hoping that combining these two fields could yield some useful results.
He was busing calibrating a prototype when the computer blared Afon and Dayana's presence. Quickly he set the ship to Eirini. It would be a few minutes before arrival. He chided himself; it was foolish to have strayed so far from the city.

"I tried but..."

He paused, he really didn't want to continue on, he didn't want to break Gwynn's heart. Hopefully Afon and Dayana would just think he was acting. That his pauses were him playing a role. He sighed when Gwynn asked if she could fix it.

"There's nothing you can do. It's over. You aren't enough for me, you've never been. I don't love you. I lied every time I said I did."

Gwynn and Garnet

Gwynn felt like she had been punched in the gut, like the wind had been knocked out of her.

"Why would you lie about that?" she asked, not really expecting an answer. What kind of answer could there possibly be? Maybe she shouldn't have told him about her feelings for him in the first place - but it wasn't like she had been forceful or threatening about it. She had thought she'd made it perfectly clear at the time that she would accept his rejection graciously.

And she would have, then, before anything had happened. Now their relationship was more than just theoretical.

"I gave you all of me," she said, crossing her arms protectively over her chest. Her voice faltered, and her whole body started to shake. "I didn't hold anything back from you. How could you do this? How could you let me do this?"

Nothing Gwynn had done with Geoffers had ever made her feel dirty or ashamed before. They were in love, and what they did in bed together was a natural expression of that love. It had always felt pure and good. Now that Gwynn knew he'd been lying all along, she felt filthy, stained, and degraded.

"I need to go," Gwynn said abruptly. "I need to time think. I don't think there's anything I need you to say to me after all. Goodbye, Geoffers. I won't bother you again."

She turned on her heel and left, with his words about how she wasn't good enough ringing in her ears.

By the time she literally ran into her sister, Gwynn was so blinded by tears that she couldn't avoid the collision. Garnet folded her into a hug. "What happened, Gwynnie?" she asked gently. "Was it Afon...?"

Gwynn shook her head. "No. It was Geoffers. He... he said he never loved me. That he was pretending all along. He said I wasn't good enough."

Garnet's brow furrowed with anger. "That ass! How dare he?"

"I'm not going to force him to stay with me," Gwynn said. "If he was never happy with me, if he never really wanted to be with me..."

"If he didn't want to be with you, he should have told you no," Garnet insisted. "If he'd turned you down when you told him how you felt, I'd feel bad for you, but I wouldn't have blamed Geoffers for not feeling the same way. What I'm angry about is how he treated you! I'm going to go give him a piece of my mind!"

She wouldn't get the chance, though, because the attack on the orphanage had already started.

Seeing Gwynn leave "Geoffers" was the sign Seth was waiting for. He turned to his army.

"Let's go."

Their orders were attack but not kill the children, not until the Goddess of Nurture was too weak to stand a chance against them. Killing the kids would only set her into an attack mode. If the humans were badly hurt but alive, surely she'd focus her powers healing her precious children. All the soldiers replied "yes, master" and teleported with Seth to Nero. They immediately started to attack anyone, no matter the age, in the orphanage. Geoffers meanwhile had absolutely no idea what was going on. He and Jared decided that they both had enough of history talk for the day. Both wanted to spend time with their girlfriends. Geoffers had no idea that Gwynn thought he didn't love her anymore, although he totally missed her talking to her twin. Instead he'd run into Afon and Dayana first.

Camillus didn't say anything when Gwynn asked why "Geoffers" would lie to her. He was sure he could make it crueler, say something truly disrespectful but he held back. He had already crushed the woman's heart, no need to totally destroy it. No one had given him a script to go off of and Gwynn was a nice person. It already made him feel like crap to do this with adding more salt to the wound.

"Goodbye."

Was all he said and Cam watched Gwynn leave. He stayed in his bird form as he asked Afon and Dayana.

"Happy now?"

"Yeah, although I would have been meaner. You should have insulted her bedroom skills."

Dayana felt that Camillus had held back a little. Cam dryly replied.

"Yeah, well, you guys didn't tell me what to say."

Even if they had, he wouldn't have went that far. Dayana shrugged ,they had gotten part one done. Seth and his army were now going to be attacking the orphanage. It was time to kill Geoffers and have the humans hate Selene and Barrett for trying to destroy Nero.

"Let's grab Geoffers and flood this planet."

She said to Afon. The Hunter was surely waiting for them to make a return to Nero and they couldn't have him finding them until they were with Seth and his army.

Mercy was bringing up a load from the laundry cellar. She was going to hang these on the line, and ask Angel to borrow some clothes so that she could wash her own. The attack happened first.
As she came to the foot of the cellar, ten of Seth's soldiers met her. They had drawn weapons in their hands. Mercy took one look at their eyes and knew it was useless to say anything. The glossed-over eyes told her that they could reason, but that there would be no reasoning with them. She backed down the stairs, and they closed on her. It was not done slowly, or menacingly. The sheer, indifferent, trance-like approach by which they came at her was in some way more terrifying than if they had tried to frighten her. There was no threat about it; she knew they would kill her without even a second thought. There was only one thing she could do.
"Mikey?" she called expectantly.
If the berserker had any trouble getting to her, none would have guessed it. A howl, mixed with various soft thuds, could be heard before a heap fell down the cellar stairs. Mikey stopped only long enough to growl menacingly at the soldiers he was not squatting over before leaping at the rest with the full fury of an overprotective bear. If they felt any pain, it would not have been for long as Mikey threw them into walls, smashed their heads into the floor or ceiling or sometimes both, and generally destroyed the washroom under Angel's house like a localized whirlwind of rage. Mercy would apoligize for it later, if there was anything left of the orphanage. She could hear screams coming from above in the house proper, and naturally assumed the worst. She was nearly ready to rush up to help, but Mikey grabbed her around the waist and threw her across his back.
"No, Mikey!" she shouted, "We have to help Angel!"
But Mikey bounded out of the celler hatch, careening through a handful of soldiers as he did. The fighters were swarming the house heavily, but Mikey tore through them like a rampaging bull, flinging aside any who stood in their way, and in a few seconds, the orphanage and the soldiers were behind them as Mikey rushed down the street, Mercy clinging to his back desperately.

---

As Grim sat completing his written orders, he noticed a general hubbub above the normal din of Eirini. He grabbed his axe and stepped out of the guard chamber. There were quite a number of frantic people running toward the villa. He quickened his pace and hailed one of them. "What new, citizen?" he asked formally.
"The city's under attack!" he said breathlessly, "Soldiers, all over the orphanage. They are literally swarming it like bees; piled up on the walls and the roof, and everything! It's absolute chaos!"
Grim pushed him aside, thinking him a madman, and looked across town to the orphanage himself. It was literally covered with dark, moving figures, and there was a certain insectine quality to them. His heart sank for a moment as he thought of Mercy there.
"Men to arms!" he bellowed as loud as he could, "The orphanage is under seige!" He pointed to the gate guards and said, "You two, find the king and queen and tell them what's happened! No doubt they will insist on coming to help, but you are the new royal guard. Do not leave their side!"
As Grim began running down the street, one of the guards replied, "But, what if they, disappear, you know, like they do?"
Grim turned and backpedaled, "Then just," he struggled, "Come join the fight!"
He wanted to waste no time as he ran full tilt toward the orphanage. Mercy was in danger, and even if not, then Angel and the children were. He told himself not to be too worried for Mercy. After all, Mikey was with her, and even if they managed to kill Mikey, Grim believed the maniac was too stubborn or too stupid to let death stop him. It would be at least a good five minutes or so after Mikey died before he stopped fighting. But Angel was a friend, and he certainly could not ignore an attack on children. Of all the dishonourable tactics, this was the worst. Someone was going to pay for this. Pay with blood. Lots of it, if Grim had his way. And much worse than blood if anything happened to Mercy.
He need not have worried, for after about two minutes, He spotted Mad Mikey running up the road with Mercy on his back. "Mikey!" he barked loudly, "Behind me!" The berserker did a quick turn and fell into pace behind his leader. "Mercy, what can you tell me?" Grim shouted as they ran.
"I don't know," she replied loudly, but timidly, "There's a lot of them. Hundreds, maybe even a thousand or more. I don't know who they are or what they want. Their eyes... It's like something is controlling them."
"Someone," Grim replied curtly, "This is gods' stuff, no doubt about it. Heads are going to roll if those kids are hurt."
"No, Grim, what if they're being controlled and can't help themselves? Please don't kill them."
"I might not have a choice, Mercy. The kids first; if we can protect them without killing, I'll try. But I'm not going to stay my hand if I think it will save one of the wee ones."
"Okay," Mercy said as softly as she dare, "I understand."
"No no!" he said sharply, "We don't know how god minds will affect you. You almost died the last time, and that was just humans."
"But--
"No Mercy! This isn't discussable!"
She sighed, which Grim just barely heard, and said, "I'm not going to stay my hand if I think it will save one of the children."
Grim's eyes narrowed as he looked straight ahead at the orphanage, and he replied, "Alright, but only, only if you absolutely have to to save a child's life. Your healing dance will probably be more useful anyway, so don't start getting ideas. Only in an emergency."
"Okay."
The discussion ended as Grim both had no more to say and needed to save his breath for running and fighting. Of course the orphanage would be on the far side of town...

::Angel was very appreciative of Mercy's help around the orphanage. Of course, she didn't have to do laundry but Mercy insisted and Angel and her family appreciated it. Laundry and dishes were things that always needed to be done and no one seemed that thrilled to do them. They were never ending battles, after all. When Seth's army attacked, they were totally caught off guard. One moment Angel was telling Ellie and Hadrian to pick up their toys and the next the doors burst open as the God of Chaos' soldiers came in and started to attack everyone they encountered. Age did not matter and if Angel thought for a moment, it seemed the soldiers wanted to go after the little children most of all.::

Kids, run!

::She told them but the soldiers were blocking the exits. Milson heard the fighting from the other room and grabbed his sword from the locked the closet. He started attacking the soldiers, trying to protect the kids.::

Angel! Open a portal!

::Milson yelled as he stabbed a soldier through the chest to protect Corla, who almost had a sword in her shoulder. Angel nodded her head. She grabbed a heavy walking stick that her grandmother had used to walk before she had died. Angel couldn't bring herself to get rid of it and right now, she was glad she hadn't. It suddenly made a good weapon. Angel was fighting off the soldiers as best she could but it was hard to fight and create a portal. Her biggest concern was protecting the children, though. Milson covered her as she opened a portal to the Royal Family's palace in Eirini.::

Go! Tell everyone what's happening!

::Angel told the children. Ellie and Hadrian were terrified until Ananda grabbed their hands and ran with them through the portal. Corla quickly followed with Mara and Tia. Other kids followed suit. Some were injured but Angel didn't have time to heal them. She trusted that Royal Family would send for doctors. Once the army was stopped or they decided this was a lost cause, then Angel would heal the kids. The villa would soon have a lot of Angel's children and the orphans she cared for there. Zander and Jabin didn't go, though. Instead they ran to the kitchen and grabbed the big knives that Angel left up high so the little kids wouldn't play with them.::

Boys, go!

::Angel told her sons, who both shook their heads.::

No way, Mom! This is our home and we're going help defend it!

::Zander told her. Angel nodded her head. Scared that her older sons could be hurt but also proud of them for being brave and wanting to help protect their home. Angel just hoped that soon more help would be on the way. Every time they killed a solider, more just seemed to take his or her place in the battle.::

Seth had created far more soldiers then he needed for this attack. It would seem like overkill to some but that's how he liked do things. He liked overwhelming his opponents. Of course, the orphanage wasn't big enough to have all his soldiers in it. He sent waves of fighters in. As reports came of soldiers being killed, Seth just sent more. He kept an ample amount around himself for protection. When, there was no if, Maverik arrived, Seth was going to make sure the Hunter was completely overwhelmed by fighters. Demi was playing recon duty, seeing what was going on inside the orphanage and reporting back to Seth.

"Master, the goddess is sending children through a portal."

"Let her, the kids aren't important. Only weakening her is."

All that mattered was weakening Angel to the point that killing her would be easy. The children were just something for him to use to do that.

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll145/sojournfan/selene.jpg

Selene and Barrett had no idea that Gwynn thought that Geoffers had never loved her. She and Barrett had seen Dr. Cierce for a checkup with the baby. Both were thrilled that everything was going well. Soon they would be parents. That excited disappeared quickly when she saw children she recognized from the orphanage. The younger ones were crying and Selene asked one of the guards.

"What is going on?"

"The children said the orphanage is under attack, your highness."

The guard replied, telling the king and queen what he had gathered from the upset children. The kids had no idea that it was Seth's army, just that the soldier kept coming. It had to be the work of Firsts....Selene gasped at the news. She turned to her husband and told him.

"We have to help."

Knowing how protective Barrett was of her and the baby, she added.

"I know you want to keep us both safe, but Angel's our friend. We have to help her, especially if that never ending army works for a First."

Barrett was very excited that soon the baby would be born. He couldn't wait to be a father. Although the good news they had gotten from the doctor's appointment was ruined by what the guards told them was going on the orphanage. There was no question that they had to help but Barrett had been protective of his wife before she was pregnant. Her being pregnant with their child just made him more so. Although he knew she was capable of protecting herself and that if this was the work of a First, they could use all the help they could get.

"You're right, just stay close."

He told Selene and then told a guard to let Gwynn and Garnet know what was happening. He and Selene teleported to the orphanage to help defend it from the attacking army. It didn't take long for them to realize the soldiers worked for Seth. They had the same type of aura as he did. Barrett wondered if they had even had a choice of attacking or not. The biggest concern was protecting any innocent people who could get hurt, though. If they could do that without killing people who might just be forced to attack, all the better.

Gwynn

Gwynn was devastated by what had happened with Geoffers, but contrary to what Afon had assumed, she wasn't too distraught to function. Her personal life wasn't going to keep her from defending the people of Nero, especially when it was her friends at the orphanage who were threatened. She would do what needed to be done. Later she could go home and cry, but today she had to fight to protect her people.

"Stay, Lizard Dog," Gwynn said. "You'll be safe here at the palace."

Garnet and Gwynn teleported to the orphanage with Barrett and Selene, then Gwynn set up a gauntlet of lightning-filled clouds in front of the orphanage's entrance. The bolts couldn't be aimed individually, but they laid a fairly effective trap for those trying to enter, especially in large groups. Garnet, meanwhile, used the crossbow - which she was now fairly competent at aiming - to ward off stragglers.

Gradually, Gwynn realized what the strange ambient sense of First-ness she was getting was. Seth. These soldiers were controlled by him. It was like the clay army all over again, sentient beings forced or coerced to attack.

"Stop!" Gwynn yelled at the soldiers. "Stop fighting! You don't have to do this. You don't have to let him control you. Lay down your weapons, and we'll set you free. We'll protect you if you stop fighting. You can have lives of your own, real lives where no one hurts you or makes you fight."

With his instinctive sense of how to locate things he wanted, Afon led them directly to Geoffers.

(((I took some liberties in describing Seth's powers. If I got it wrong, let me know. Also, this is before Gwynn sets up her lightning shield, or perhaps it is at a different entrance.)))

As Maverik flew toward the city, he studied the computer readings, trying to pinpoint the locations of Afon and Dayana. But UE detection was never an exact science, and getting an exact location was impossible. It did not stop Maverik from trying, however.
He was distracted by a large covering of a completely different type of energy. He contacted his support. "I need to know who this energy signature belongs to," he said sharply.
"Hold on a second," his contact replied, "Let me run it against the database. Uh... Says here the first of disorder. Major powers are destabilization of energy, particularly UE energy, and the ability to rearrange matter into energy and energy into matter. It notes that he is a warmonger and is capable of creating warriors from his own energy, enough to form his own army."
"An army?"
"Yeah, but it does not say how large. You should know better; you were the one who killed him last."
Maverik thought for a moment, "Oh, right. That one. Guess its time to kill him again. Maverik out."

---

As Grim, Mikey, and Mercy neared the orphanage, they could see just how many soldiers their truly were. A small circle of soldiers surrounded the building, warding off anyone who tried to approach. A couple of citizens had tried to fight against them, but they had been wounded for their troubles. Nothing serious, but wounded all the same, and certain others were giving them first aid.
As they came closer, Grim barked, "Mercy down. If ya want to dance, give us some back up."
"Alright, and the children too."
She slid off Mikey's back and trotted to a stop; they had been running at a fairly good pace, and she knew they were not about to stop. She began dancing, a series of spins with sudden stops and long, graceful arm movements. She began singing, a light soprano, with long, slow notes. The words were foreign, but she knew what it would do. Those she wanted to protect would find their skin like rock. Blades and blows would do little damage if any. It should keep Grim, Mikey, Angel, Milton, and the children safe.
Grim and Mikey meanwhile barreled onward toward the house. Several of the soldiers aimed their weapons toward the two newcomers, but Grim would not be intimidated. For one, he had heard Mercy's song, and knew what effect, or lack of effect, those weapons would have on him. For another, he was a barbarian, and it would take more weapons than that to sway him. He and Mikey collided with the mass of men and sent them reeling. He himself picked up and threw the soldiers aside while Mikey simply tacked them to the ground, bounding from one body to the next. Once they were in the thick of the soldiers, the going was slow, but it was also forward. Slowly but surely, Grim waded through the soldiers like wading through chest-high snow, shoving and shoveling them out of his way, while Mikey progressed forward like a hound through snow, bounding and leaping, throwing off heaps of soldiers as he did.
Grim, however, quickly noticed what Mercy had meant. He could tell that these soldiers were capable of thought and decision-making, but it was as if their will had been stripped from them. As if they had no other purpose than to follow orders.
And as it dawned on the soldiers that Grim and Mikey were not stoppable anyway, they tactically allowed them to pass without hindering them much. After all, their orders had said nothing about the large man and the man with a sword in his back, only the children, Angel, and anyone inside the orphanage. They were told not to let anyone in and not to let anyone leave, naturally, but reason dictated that it would be easier not to let the big man leave than to prevent him from entering at all. Every now and then one would attempt an attack on one or the other and be thrown over top the crowd as a result.
At the end of a tense two minutes of wading through soldiers who slowed stood aside to let them pass, Grim still had to throw out several of the soldiers who stood in the doorway to make room for himself. Mikey growled aggressively at the soldiers who formed a living hedge about them, but Grim had told him to save his strength for the ones that would fight. He pushed his way inside and closed the door behind him. He would liked to have barred it, but there was nothing to bar it with. That was the strangest thing. There seemed to be a rather abundant lack of bodies, either of children or of soldiers. Once inside, the soldiers took a stronger notice of him and attacked anew. "Try not to put holes in the walls, Mikey!" he shouted as he grabbed one of the soldiers by the arm and swung him around like a flail, then added, "Angel! Anyone! Help is here! Where are you?"

While everyone was focused on trying to save the orphanage from Seth and his army, Dayana and Camillus both agreed to get moving before Maverik found them. Dayana didn't go through all of this just to have the Hunter come too fast and Cam definitely didn't want to cross paths with him. When they found Geoffers, who was totally unaware anything was wrong, Dayana put up the illusion that she was Selene and Afon was Barrett. Dayana walked up to Geoffers and slapped in the face as Cam talked in Selene's voice.

"You jerk! How could you?!"

Geoffers would obviously have no idea what was going on but Cam quickly switched to Barrett's voice.

"I warned you about what would happen if you screwed around on my little sister."

Barrett had made the point of making Cam know bad things would happen if he hurt Garnet, so it was safe to assume that the same threat had been given to Geoffers. They grabbed Geoffers and teleported him to the far end of the planet, in the desert of Fotia. Cam continually switched between Selene and Barrett's voices, having a conversation with himself about what they should to do the jerk that had broken their little sister's heart. To Geoffers it would seem that Gwynn's older siblings wanted to kill him, although they disagreed about how and appeared to use their powers in their argument.

Seth had given her a little more power then the other soldiers because of the special task he had assigned her. Her master would be pleased to know the rest of Nero's Firsts had arrived to help the Goddess of Nurture defend her home. Now all he would need was for Dayana and Afon to kill Geoffers and then join him in killing these Firsts and the Hunter who would eventually arrive. She was about to leave to tell Seth the news when Gwynn pleaded at them to stop.

"We can't. Our master will kill us. We only exist to carry out his will."

The Chaos soldiers truly believed their only reason for existence was to carry out every whim and demand of the God of Chaos. If they failed him, they were dead. If he died, then they believed they would die as well.

He was about to ask her why she did that when "Barrett" said he screwed around with his sister.

He asked but both just yelled that he knew. Which he did not and was utterly confused. The next thing he knew, "Barrett" punched him in the gut and all three of them were in Fotia and the king and queen wanted to kill him. He tried to plead with them that he'd talk to Gwynn, find out what he had did to make her upset but neither would listen to him. You won't die if you disobey. I know that's hard to believe, but you aren't the first army to come here thinking you had no choice, but then to become part of Nero and have your own lives. Lives of freedom."

Showing exceptionally if unintentionally good timing, members of the clay army and the T'brryr arrived to help protect the orphanage. The clay soldiers still couldn't speak, but they had taken to carrying slates or notebooks on which they could write what they wanted to say. When they'd carried on the masquerade long enough to make it believable - with Afon enjoying every moment of hurting and confusing Geoffers - the God of Floods began to make the flood waters rise. Fire and ice supposedly canceled each other out. Afon was sure that this display would convince the people of Nero that their royals were doing battle.

Although it wasn't strictly necessary, Afon made sure the water he was aiming at Geoffers picked up some small, sharp rocks along the way. Cutting up that pretty face a bit would be suitable revenge for stealing Gwynn's affections... not that Afon expected Geoffers to live long enough to care.

They had sent Zander and Jabin to make sure none of the little kids were hiding. They had no time to do a headcount and Angel just hoped that most of the children had went through the portal that she had opened up. Despite it being draining, she kept it open. She was afraid that if she didn't, then she wouldn't be able open it again for more children. None of the attackers seemed interested in it anyway, their orders were to attack the orphanage, not the villa that the portal was leading to. "We're in here!" Angel's voice came from the dining area.
Grim and Mikey did their best to subdue the soldiers fighting, but there were many of them. More than there should have been, Grim felt. It seemed that they were getting back up too quickly. There was some some of first magic going on, Grim was certain of it. He did not know exactly what, but something was not right with all of this.
Eventually, though, Grim and Mikey cleared the room enough to make it into the dining room. There were some soldiers between Grim and Mikey and Milton and Angel, and there were soldiers filling in behind Grim and Mikey, but Grim felt that if they could push them out of the dining room and regroup, they could make a good push to clear the building.
Fortunately, Barrett and Selene had shown up and were in the room with Angel and Milton. "I figured you'd be here sooner or later," Grim said to them as he took one of the soldiers and threw him into the soldiers coming in from the living room. "Let's try to clear this room out first. Geoffers had no idea what had happened to Selene and Barrett, they weren't acting like themselves. He knew they were very protective of their little sisters but killing him without letting him give his side or figure what the heck was going on, was very out of character.

"Just let me talk to-"

He must have said or done something that had upset Gwynn, although he had no idea what. Before he had left to help Jared with the history books, she was her normal happy self. Before he could plead to talk to Gwynn, his head slammed into some rocks. Fire and Ice cancelled each other and it seemed they were creating a flood in the desert. They weren't near the capital city but a group of nomads were witnessing it all. His face and body got cut up and he passed out from a blow to the head. He'd probably drown in the water and he still had no idea what he had done to make them think this was justified. Where was Gwynn? Did she agree with what her siblings had decided to do? Was whatever he done so horrible, that she was okay with him being dead? That seemed so out of character too...The Gwynn he loved would try to work through a misunderstanding, not just let him die. Once his world went black, he didn't have to worry about those questions anymore at least.

He was having an argument with himself and having to switch back and forth between voices was a little consuming. Then Geoffers got quiet and Cam realized he was going to drown. That's when it hit him that this was wrong. Geoffers had done nothing to deserve this, despite whatever Dayana and Afon thought. He had agreed to this for two reasons. One was treasure and the other was to repay Dayana for saving his life. Treasure didn't appeal to to him that much now. And he realized that he owed Dayana nothing. Innocent people were going to killed and he wanted no part of it. Besides, when he really thought about it, he actually owed Gwynn a debt now. If Lizard Dog had still be a stray when he found him as a mouse, the dog would have tried to eat him. Instead Lizard Dog had just presented him to Gwynn. In a way she saved his life. He'd rather be indebted to her then Dayana. Although she'd hate him once she found out what was really going on. Just like Garnet would...Any chance he had with her was long over but he could at least make this right. He didn't have to let Geoffers die or any more people.

"I'm done."

Cam said in his own voice and Dayana shrugged.

"Fine, we'll get your treasure after-"

"No, I'm done with all of this!"

Cam replied in angry and morphed into a dragon. He reached into the water and pulled Geoffers out with his claw. Dayana was angry and screamed at him.

"What are you doing?! You owe me! You-"

"I did what I said I would. The debt's repaid."

Camillus told her and Dayana screamed at him when he took flight, cradling Geoffers in hiscdragon claw. He'd need to get Geoffers to a doctor and then try to help save that orphanage. He could hear Dayana's curses as he flew to Eirini, dropping Geoffers off to Dr. Cierce's for treatment. It didn't take long to find the orphanage, it wasn't hard to miss a massive army surrounding it. He swooped down and started to attack the soldiers that wouldn't back down.

Gwynn

"He can try," Gwynn said. "But he doesn't have to win. Firsts aren't all-powerful. We'll protect you. We'll help you fight back..."

An arrow whizzed by, grazing Gwynn's right ear. Blood poured down the side of her face. For an instant, the storm shield faltered as she lost concentration, but then she forced her energy back into maintaining it. If she had gone into her cloud form, she could have prevented herself from being damaged - but she couldn't use any of her combat powers from that form. She needed to stay solid to keep the shield up, even at risk of being harmed.

"You can be killed and hurt, but gods can be killed and hurt too. He tricked you. He made you think you owe him everything, but you can do what you want now that..."

Gwynn realized that one of Seth's soldiers had gotten through when the lightning had stopped for an instant, and he was now charging at Demi with a massive pike in his hands. Apparently, this soldier took the fact that Demi was even considering the question as disloyalty.

In that split second, Gwynn saw what was going to happen. The pike was going to be run through Demi, and not only would she lose her life, but the tiny hope of saving some of Seth's soldiers would be extinguished in the chaos. Gwynn knew that if there was any chance at all, she couldn't allow this to happen. Demi needed to live.

She threw herself in front of Demi, so the pike ripped into Gwynn instead. The sharp point entered at an awkward angle because the soldier hadn't anticipated the abrupt move, so it tore upward from Gwynn's left hip and emerged from her right shoulder. Pain exploded through Gwynn's body. No longer able to stand, she tumbled to the ground, even as Garnet put a crossbow bolt through the attacking soldier.

Gwynn met Demi's eyes again, and croaked, "Firsts... can... be harmed. Don't... waste... this..."

Afon

"What in the fifteen hells of Mandolos does he think he's doing?" Afon demanded, although there was no real answer to that question. Dayana surely wouldn't know, and she had only vouched that Camillus would go along with the plan, not that he would be reliable.

It drove him crazy that Geoffers had survived. Something would need to be done about that. Afon briefly considered tracking them down, but realized that when the Hunter showed up, he didn't want to be far from Seth's army. Killing Geoffers could wait.

"Let's go meet back up with Seth," Afon said. "I'm sure Maverik will be here soon. I think we've put on enough of a show."

Maverik's intention had been to find the first of disorder and kill him. Destroy the head, and the body crumbles. Without Seth to give life to his army, they would dissipate, fade away into nothing. However, he could not simply let the orphanage be overwhelmed while he dealt with a bigger threat. He had stopped briefly to watch Gwynn and Garnet defending the front door to ensure they could handle it. It was well that he had, for he while he did not see the attack, he saw Gwynn falter and her storm shield subside. They would need help.
He dropped from his invisible ship toward the crowd closing in on Garnet, landing close beside her. Strapped across his back was another crossbow of the same make as the one he had given Garnet. As he rose to a stand, he slipped the bow into his right arm, but he did not raise it. There was a strange, soft, high-pitched tone coming from him, and it had been growing higher ever since he had landed. The soldiers hesitated for half a second, and then resumed their approach. Instead of attacking them, Maverik simply held out his left hand, palm outward. A pale, green-grey light was coming from his palm. The tone had now passed beyond the range of hearing. The soldiers were almost on top of them.
There should have been a sound. There should have been a flash or a pop. There should have been something besides the constant, eerie glow from his palm and the silent yet ever-present tone. But there was not, and what happened next was the more shocking because of it. The soldiers at which Maverik pointed his hand all flew backward some fifteen feet. He swept his hand across the crowd, and the entire mob was flung backward away from Maverik, Gwynn, Garnet, and Demi.
As the soldiers were picking themselves up, he let a few shots loose, each a killing shot. "If you want to save her," he ordered Garnet between shots, "Get Angel now. And you: do not move. I want to know why Gwynn thought you were worth dying for, but if you move, I am not that curious."

"I don't know! I'm not his mother or a mind reader!"

Dayana yelled at Afon. She had no idea what had came over Camillus. Obviously his short time on Nero had made him weak. He had done what he said he would and there had been a little bit of an audience for "Selene" and "Barrett's" fight. Hopefully that news would spread.

"Let's go. Camillus can die with the rest of them."

She replied, angry that the God of Mimicking had decided to double cross them. When they arrived at the orphanage, Dayana could see that Maverik had arrived.

"We need to go after him while he's distracted."

Dayana told Afon and Seth.

Demi

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll145/sojournfan/demi.jpg

Demi shook her head to Gwynn. She couldn't picture a future where Seth was not her master. He had given her life and he could easily take it away. She gasped in shock when Gwynn protected her from other one of Seth's soldiers. Just by talking to one their enemies made her a traitor. Seth would have never taken a pike for anyone, he'd expect them to protect him. She got down on her knees and asked Gwynn.

"Why? Why did you do that? I...My life has no value. You matter to people. You have people who love you."

She looked up in fear at Maverik and nodded her head. The fear that Seth never voiced but had in his mind of the Hunter was in Demi's as well. He'd kill her if she disobeyed. Seth was angry that Camillus had turned against them and was directing some of his soldiers to take out the dragon while others were supposed to attack the orphanage. He had no idea Maverik had arrived until Dayana and Afon said so. He was angry that Demi was failing at her job and started yelling for her. Seth's angry voice filled her mind and she grabbed her head in pain. The pendant she wore on a chain around her neck glowed a violent red and she said.

"He's going to kill me..."

Gwynn and Garnet

"Your life... does... have value," Gwynn gasped. "You matter... to me."

She saw Demi's pendant glow red, and when the woman grabbed her head in agony, Gwynn could pretty easily conclude what it meant. She reached up and gripped the pendant with a hand stained with her own blood, and with what little strength remained in her, she yanked until the chain broke. When the pendant came free in her hand, Gwynn released it to the ground.

Garnet was trying to hold it together, but it wasn't easy. She nodded to Maverik, and then hurried inside. Two of the clay soldiers moved in closer, ready to move Gwynn to safety if the line of soldiers recovered the distance they'd lost to Maverik.

"Thanks," Gwynn murmured to Maverik, and gestured weakly with her head in the direction of Garnet. She was under no illusions that Maverik cared what happened to her or wanted her to live, but that didn't matter now. Gwynn was just glad he was willing to help protect Garnet, and that was what she was trying to tell him she was grateful for.

Inside the orphanage, Garnet didn't waste any time, but just started yelling. "Gwynn is hurt! It's... it's really bad!"

"I will take care of her," Maverik said gently to Gwynn as he killed a few more soldiers and threw back another crowd, "Of all the firsts, I had the most hope in you. That I would not have to kill you. And now that you have nearly convinced me, it does not matter. I am sorry. I hope your next self is as gentle as you are."
He remembered now about the jewels. He had to shoot them through the jewels or they would keep coming back. The crossbow should be powerful enough, and Maverik's skill made the shot easily. The difficulty was the numbers. Maverik only had a limited supply of bolts, and it was less than the number of soldiers. If this kept up, he would need a sword at some point. He had not trained much with the sword, but he knew enough to use one proficiently.
Suddenly a dragon flew over the orphanage roof and began to circle around. "Oh, wunderbar," he muttered to himself. He aimed at the dragon, paused, and said, "Wait, there are no dragons on Nero." He watched carefully as the dragon completed its turn and came down again, attacking the soldiers and not the orphanage. He remembered the energy signature he picked up yesterday. "The first of Mimics is a shapechanger. Right. Well, at least he is helping."
Maverik fired the last few shots from his repeating bow and used the distraction of a dragon to reload. Perhaps he might not need that sword after all.

Gwynn

Gwynn was startled by what Maverik said. She would never have guessed that he would think like that about her. Not that it really mattered now, but it felt good to hear something nice at a moment like this.

"That is... very kind," Gwynn rasped, and added hopefully, "Maybe I... won't come back... at all."

Gwynn had no desire to be reincarnated. The idea terrified her. What if she came back as the sort of First she despised? The risk seemed too great. She would rather just be done, for good.

Not that she wanted to die, of course. Gwynn had a lot to live for. She had lost Geoffers, but she still had her family, her friends, and her dog. It would have been nice to have one mortal lifetime to enjoy that. She had made her choice, though - and she didn't regret giving her life to save Demi. She just hoped it would help, and that she wouldn't come back as a monster.

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll145/sojournfan/demi.jpg

Demi feel to her knees and grabbed her head. The pain from Seth was overwhelming as her pendant glowed bright red. She hadn't responded to his call, she was a traitor. She was going to die and her master would make it painful...Those were thoughts running through her mind. Even though her heart was racing that death was coming, she still heard Gwynn's words.

"I do?"

She asked in shock. She looked up and she was surprised that Gwynn said she mattered to her. They had literally just met and had been on opposing sides. Demi gasped as Gwynn grabbed the pendant and yanked it free from the chain. Instantly the pain was gone and she no longer heard Seth's voice. For the first time since she had been created, she didn't feel Seth inside her mind. She was free of him. The pendant exploded on the ground as soon as Gwynn released it.

"Thank you."

She told Gwynn. The goddess was badly injured and yet she tried to save Demi instead of just worrying about herself. She was a good person and Demi hoped that Angel had enough strength to help her. She looked around and saw that some of the other soldiers had stopped fighting now. They were in shock and awe that Gwynn had not only saved Demi's life but had also freed her from Seth's will. They dropped their weapons and pulled at each other's pendants to see if it would work for them as well. Gwynn's choice had given them hope that maybe they did have to serve Seth for their entire lives. Demi turned to Maverik and pleaded.

"Please, don't kill us all. Not all of us want to fight for Seth. We just thought we didn't have a choice."

Seth cursed loudly when Demi didn't die. His connection to her was broken when Gwynn pulled off the pendant. He felt he was losing the connection to other soldiers that had been in the same area.

"If we're going to do something about the Hunter, we need to do it now."

He told Afon and Dayana. He wasn't going to admit it but he was losing control of them. Some of his soldiers thought they could have freedom and were willing to take a chance at it. It was in one area but a thing like that could spread like wildfire. If they didn't make a move, then this would have been all for nothing. In an attempt to stop the rebellion, he started killing the soldiers that were trying to break their pendants. Although Seth knew he wouldn't be able to kill them all before they broke free of his control.

Afon surveyed the field, and sighed. The army was rapidly getting of control, and Seth was now slaughtering his own minions to prevent more defections. If they were going to have any semblance of the superior numbers, they needed to act immediately.

"Right," he said. "Let's get moving. Keep your soldiers attacking him to distract him, and when we get close enough, we use our powers to destroy him. He can't take on an entire army plus three Firsts at once."

::The reinforcements on their side was helping as was whatever dance Mercy was doing. Although the army outside was still overwhelming, with everyone's combined efforts, they were starting to regain control inside the orphanage. When Garnet came in screaming that her twin needed help, Angel immediately replied.::

I'm coming!

::She was already weakened from the fight and keeping the portal open so many of the children could escape to safety, but there was no way she'd let a friend die if she could prevent it. Milson told her to go, they'd handle things here. She was shocked to see some of Seth's soldiers ripping off each other's pendants and that they had dropped their weapons. Apparently not all of them wanted to fight. Gwynn's injuries were very bad, she would not have survived waiting for the battle to be over to get medical attention. Angel dropped down to her knees and touched Gwynn's wound with one of her glowing yellow hands.::

It'll be okay.

::She said, trying to remain positive, although she didn't feel that way. It was very bad...She looked up at Barrett and Selene, who had followed, and told them quietly.::

I'm going to need to borrow some energy.

::She knew that without a doubt. Even if she hadn't been part of a battle or creating a portal, she would still need to borrow the energy to give Gwynn a fighting chance. Of course, she wasn't shocked that Gwynn's older siblings offered up energy without an argument. She decided to drain Barrett of some of his energy first. After all, Selene was pregnant and Angel would prefer not to take too much of a pregnant woman's energy, First or not. Although she also didn't want to totally drain Barrett with a battle still going on. Even as some soldiers stopped attacking and Seth killed others, there were always those who believed in the cause and continued to fight. If she wasn't so concerned with saving Gwynn's life, she might have been fascinated that there was a dragon helping out too. She hadn't met Camillus yet. However, her only concern right now was borrowing energy from those who would offer it and trying to save Gwynn's life.::

Dayana was frustrated. This was not how this battle was supposed to go. Seth was killing his own soldiers to stop the rebellion and Camillus had double crossed them. He was now helping their enemies protect the orphanage. Everything was getting of control and if they didn't act fast, then they should have just stayed on Llyr or Taurus then come back to Nero. She nodded her head to Afon.

"Let's do this."

She was ready to kill the Hunter. She considered him the biggest threat out of all of their enemies right now. Angel would surely be drained, as would Selene and Barrett, from the fight and trying to save Gwynn's life. When Angel said she needed energy to help Gwynn, there was no question that Selene and Barrett would help. Both offered to let her drain them without question. They would do whatever they had to do save their little sister's life.

"I'm ready."

Seth said, nodding his head to Dayana and Afon. Any soldiers that were still under his command stopped attacking the orphanage's defenders and turned their attention to Maverik. He quickly had thousands of soldiers trying to kill him all at once. Hopefully that would keep the Hunter distracted and occupied enough that the three Firsts could kill him. Once he was dead, the Nero's Firsts could all die. Barrett and Selene tried to remain positive for Gwynn's sake. Telling her that she'd be fine, although both could tell the wounds were bad. They just hoped Angel would be able to help her. Demi felt awful that Gwynn might die because of her. She wasn't sure how it happened but the soldiers that had broken their pendants all started to look to her for leadership, maybe because she was the first one to be free of Seth's command.

"You can take our energy too, if you need it."

Demi told Angel and the other freed soldiers nodded their heads in agreement. They didn't want the Goddess of Storms to die. They were free and it was because of her.

Gwynn and Afon

Gwynn's eyes started to flutter closed. She'd lost too much blood, and the internal damage was too much. She was barely conscious enough to give Angel a grateful smile for coming to help her, and another thankful smile to all the people who had offered their energy for her, including Seth's former soldiers. As Angel healed her, Gwynn felt her ebbing life returning. She wasn't sure if that meant she was going to live - but at least there was a lot less pain.

Even as Gwynn was starting to feel better, she caught sight of Afon. He didn't seem to notice her, though; he was focused on the Hunter. Afon sent a wave of water in Maverik's direction, indifferent to the fact it would take out some of Seth's soldiers on the way. There were more fighters where those came from.

"Maverik, look out!"

Barrett yelled when he saw that Afon was also sending a wave of water the Hunter's direction. Angel had borrowed some of his energy to heal Gwynn but she hadn't been greedy and totally drained him. Dayana threw energy blasts in Maverik's direction. It didn't surprise her at all that Barrett tried to warn the Hunter. Nero's Firsts were insane for being allies with a guy who wanted them dead. Selene put up a wall of ice, trying to prevent more soldiers from attacking Maverik and to give him more of a fighting chance against Dayana, Seth, and Afon. They weren't friends but they did have an alliance. Sure it was about Janus, but Selene wasn't going to just let the other Firsts kill him. Camillus was shocked to see Barrett and Selene trying to help Maverik out. He still wasn't sure about this whole alliance thing, it seemed far fetched to be allies with someone who killed gods for a living. The orphanage seemed to be safe now that Seth had directed his remaining loyal soldiers to attack the Hunter. They were trying to break down the ice wall separating them from Maverik.

As Angel began healing Gywnn, Maverik noticed that the soldiers began a new offensive. They all seemed focused on where they were gathered. Maverik was forced to use his left hand to repel soldiers consistently. This meant reloading his bow with his hip, which considerably slowed his rate of fire. The wave of water that approached them would be a little more difficult to deal with, but he could now see Afon, Seth, and Dayana in the distance. As for Dayana's energy strikes, these he simply would allow to hit him. Such things posed no threat to him at all. The water would have been no threat either, but he could not allow the orphanage (and possibly the orphans) to be harmed.
Maverik braced himself as the water passed around them. He stood, his left hand dramatically poised in front of him (though not for the effect of drama), holding a wall of water nearly eight feet tall (and filled with several soldiers) ten feet away from himself. He slowly moved his arm and thrust the wave aside. As he did, he brought up the crossbow and took a shot at Dayana's chest. It was still quite a distance, and if she saw it coming, she could probably dodge it. But then, it was quite a distance, and at that range, she might not see it coming.
Selene froze some of the water as it passed, creating a barrier against the soldiers and giving them a brief respite. "If it is safe to move her," he ordered, "You need to move her."
It was now that Grim came out of the house, Mikey following him, "The house is clear. The soldiers just dis--oh. There they are."
"Glad you are here, Grim. Think you can hold off an army? I would like to end this."
"Mercy doesn't want me killing anyone if I don't have to, and I don't feel right about killing people who can't choose not to fight."
Maverik smiled slightly and said, "They are not people. They are a figments of a first's power, no more real than killing a cloud." He looked over toward Gwynn and added, "No offense."
Grim took a moment to consider this. "So, they're not really people?"
"Do you see any dead bodies? When they die, they return to energy. That is all they are."
Grim considered this some more, smiled broadly, then said, "Selene, can you keep these walls up for me and create a choke? I can handle them better if they're only coming from one side."

Gwynn

Gwynn was barely conscious, and wouldn't have taken offense to the comment about killing a cloud anyway. Real clouds were just tiny droplets of water; her cloud form was just like a cloud, and anyway, she knew what Maverik meant. What she felt she needed to object to, though, was Maverik saying that the soldiers weren't people. It was obvious to Gwynn that they were. She'd seen them exhibit fear, anger, and loyalty. How could anyone deny they were people after that?

Garnet reached down and gave her bloodstained hand a warning squeeze. For a moment, Gwynn was shocked at what side Garnet was coming down on, after being treated like less than a person herself... and then Gwynn realized what was going on.

The soldiers were people. But some of them were still going to have to die, if they wouldn't stop attacking. Grim wouldn't be able to fight as well - and might very well get himself killed - if he understood the full import of the situation.

Gwynn met Demi's eyes, and willed her to understand what was going on. They were friends now, weren't they? Didn't saving someone's life make you a friend? Gwynn wasn't sure now. After what had happened with Geoffers, Gwynn didn't know if she could trust her own judgment about people anymore. Surely at the very least, logic would tell Demi that Gwynn wouldn't die for a mere blob of some other First's energy, so obviously she didn't believe that.

Ideally, Gwynn shouldn't be moved yet. She was still in serious jeopardy. At this point, though, leaving her in the middle of a battle when she was too injured to defend herself was a much bigger risk. She nodded that she would go; she was no help here, and her family would be at greater risk if they had to try to protect her.

Afon was irritated that his wave hadn't done anything, so he started preparing a greater gush of flood waters, filling the torrent with debris - rocks, bits of metal, sharp scraps of wood. Surely that would be harder to ignore. The Hunter couldn't hold out forever, surely...

Dayana was angry that her energy blasts had no effect on the Hunter. What kind of blasted creature was he?! She was going to launch another, stronger energy blast when she saw an arrow coming for her. She moved quickly to dodge it. Instead of getting in the chest, it grazed her arm. All her years of existence, she was rarely hurt. Dayana liked to pull strings, not directly be involved in the fighting. She was even angrier now when she saw blood dripping down her arm. Although instead of taking her rage out on Maverik, she turned to Seth.

"This is all your fault! You can't even control your own damn army!"

She screamed at him and launched herself at him. All the trouble she had went through to get him from Robin on Taurus had been such a waste. She was going to kill him and then Afon for making her listen to this stupid idea. Selene didn't fully agree that Seth's soldiers weren't people. They were capable of thoughts and feelings, just like the clay army and the T'brryr were. Although wasn't the time to argue about that. Selene nodded her head to Grim.

"You got it."

She created and maintained ice walls to give Grim a choke on the soldiers that would not surrender.

Seth yelled back at Dayana. Perhaps if she could do more the create illusions and stupid energy blasts, they'd have the upper hand in this. Instead it felt like he had done far more work and it was all for nothing. When she launched herself at him, Seth fought back. He forgot all about Maverik or Nero's Firsts. He got the upper hand on Dayana, pinning her to the ground.

"I'm going to enjoy crushing your larynx."

Seth hissed at Dayana, shutting her up suddenly seemed like the best idea in the whole universe right now. Barrett agreed that Gwynn needed to be moved inside and gently picked his little sister. He thought the soldiers were people as well and the ones who surrender would get rights like the clay soldiers and the T'brryr had when it was over. A middle of a battle wasn't the time to discuss what it meant to be a person, though. Demi smiled at Gwynn so she knew that she understood that Gwynn didn't view them as nothing. She wouldn't have almost died for nothing. Instead Demi and the other soldiers tried to appeal on the sidelines for other soldiers to break their pendants and be free of Seth's control. They were free and they could be as well. If they didn't stop attacking, then they would die. Some listened but others didn't.

Afon stared at Dayana and Seth in disgust. Didn't they see that their silly little fight was destroying the chance their alliance might have had? From Afon's perspective, they had Maverik on the defensive, and now they just needed to push their advantage and eliminate him once and for all.

Dayana and Seth were obviously not going to cooperate, though, so Afon made a split second decision. He couldn't fight Maverik alone. If Chaos and Order were going to fight each other, Afon would take advantage of the distraction and accomplish some personal business.

Meanwhile, Maverik made sure Grim was alright. He trusted the barbarian, but Grim had his limits. His plan was to come out the other side of the orphanage and use his ship to get behind Seth, Afon, and Dayana and kill them before they even saw it coming. However, before he could follow Gwynn into the house, he heard Barrett say, "Don't you dare touch her."
He quickly entered the door with his crossbow ready and saw Afon there. Maverik simply fired a shot at his heart; there was no need for words or ultimatums. Afon had already sealed his own sentence when he killed those in the iron foundry.

::Angel was grateful for the extra energy provided. She gave Gywnn a smile when it appeared that the healing was helping. She followed Barrett inside the orphanage when it was suggested that Gwynn be moved. Ideally she shouldn't be but being near a battle wasn't a safe place either. Milson and the boys headed outside to see if they could help. Angel told Gwynn.::

Your brother's right.

::Angel wasn't a hundred percent sure that Gwynn would be okay but positive comments were always good for an injured person's morale. She took a defensive stance when Afon entered the orphanage, ready to help take him down if Maverik's shot failed to kill him.::

Gwynn and Afon

Afon laughed. "I'll do more than touch her," he said. "She's going to die, painfully. Then her little boyfriend, and then that thing that she calls her twin..."

He never got the sentence out. Afon had been too focused on Gwynn and Barrett to notice Maverik coming. The bolt hit him straight through the heart, and he fell forward, landing just inches from the couch where Gwynn was lying. His blood spattered Gwynn, although there was enough of her own blood staining her clothes and skin that Afon's didn't stand out for long.

Gwynn turned away for a moment. Much as she hated seeing death, though, Afon wasn't someone she was going to mourn.

"Thank you," she told Barrett and Maverik. They might have had different reasons - her older brother to protect her, and Maverik to eliminate a rogue First - but both of them had defended Nero against Afon, and she was grateful for that.

"And thank you for the healing," Gwynn added to Angel. "It feels... not great, but... a little better."

"Save your breath," Maverik said as Gwynn thanked him, "If you are going to survive this, you will need to keep up your strength. You are very lucky; it seems the spear actually missed your lungs, heart, anything else vital. Now, if you will excuse me; Afon's companions are waiting for me."
Maverik went out through the back of the building, made sure no one was watching him, and climbed into his ship. He had suspicions about how Gwynn survived, but they were pointless to speculate over right now.
He piloted the ship high over the city, and only someone with exceptional eyesight would be able to see anything. He lay on the floor of his ship, pulled himself up to his chest through the open door, and looked nearly straight down. He could see, with his heightened eyesight, Dayana lying with Seth over top of her, looking like he was strangling her. It suited him fine; now he could probably put one bolt through both of them. How poetic.
He leaned outside. Line up the shot. Measure the winds, correcting. Doublecheck. Sighting for Dayana's head. Anticipate the currents, correcting. Resighting Seth. Resighting Dayana. Aiming. Fire.
The shot dove straight for Seth's heart. Maverik quickly reloaded without so much as losing his aim and let another shot fly for Dayana's head. He would have preferred a body shot; better odds at hitting something if she moved wrong, but she was pinned beneath Seth. It probably would not matter, anyway. The first shot might be powerful enough to kill them both, and if not, the second shot aught to do. All the same, Maverik loaded a third shot and waited, watching carefully to see what would happen.

"You...wish..."

Dayana replied as she struggled to breath with Seth trying to choke her. She freed her one hand and burned the side of Seth's face with the energy blast that was right on the palm of her hand. Her attacks might not have hurt Maverik but they did hurt Seth. In their petty fight, neither realized that Maverik had just killed Afon or that he had came back for them. The first shot killed Seth and Dayana cackled that the God of Chaos was dead. Before she had chance to push him off her, the second shot killed her. Camillus turned his head after seeing Maverk kill the gods of Chaos and Order, eventually they would reborn and continue their wars. He noticed that the only soldiers remaining were the ones that had all stopped fighting, they had removed their pendants that gave Seth control of them and had surrendered. They were sure that there would some harsh punishment from the people of Nero for attacking the orphanage and they were ready to face it. It was better to be free, even if it only lasted a short time. He had held his dragon form for a long time and it had drained him of energy. He morphed back to his human form and wondered what the Royal Family would do with the former soldiers. It was a little sad so few remained but surely they'd be given a second chance like the clay soldiers and the T'brryr had. He was sure he'd be given no second chance, unlike Demi and her comrades who weren't given a choice, he had one and he made the wrong one.

"No way in-"

Barrett had fire forming in his hands when Afon started to him what he was going to do to his family when Maverik suddenly appeared and killed the God of Floods. Barrett had been more then ready to get into a fistfight with the other First if it had came to it. He was sure Maverik didn't expect or want any thanks. Barrett turned to Gwynn and told her.

"You're welcome, Gwynn. You know I'd do anything for you, Little Sis. You rest up and I'll see what's going on outside. Then we'll get you home. I'm sure Geoffers is worried."

He and Selene still had no idea that Gwynn thought that Geoffers had never loved her. It had been totally unintentional to mention Geoffers and if Barrett had an idea what had happened, he'd would have hunted that jerk down for hurting her. But he didn't and he headed outside to see that his wife was safe and that Seth and Dayana were dead. Seth had been so busy getting ready to make Dayana pay for burning him, that he didn't even realize that Maverik returned. The remaining soldiers were the ones who had rebelled against Seth before he had died. Demi bowed down in front of the king and queen.

"We are at your mercy, any punishment you see fit, we will accept."

"You will not be punished."

Barrett replied and Demi and the other soldiers looked at the king in shock.

"We attacked the orphanage. I'm the reason your sister is hurt. We-"

"Gwynn made a choice to protect you and it was the right one. We know that Seth forced you to work for him. You and your friends are not the first army sent to attack us against your will."

Selene was relieved when the battle was over and she could stop creating ice walls. The pregnant goddess was almost ready to give birth and the constant use of her powers was tiring her out. She smiled at Barrett and assured him quietly that she was fine. She nodded her head in agreement when they addressed Seth's former soldiers.

"We will offer you the same thing we offered the clay soldiers and the T'brryr. If you wish to live in peace and do not harm the people of this planet, Nero can be your home as well. You will have the same freedom and rights as all of Nero's citizens."

Demi was shocked at the offer Selene said and that her husband quickly backed her up. None of Seth's former soldiers expected that. They expected to be killed for their parts in the attack. She looked over at the clay soldiers and the T'brryr. They nodded their heads that the offer was true. They had been given second chances and Demi and her friends could have that too if they wanted. She looked at her comrades who all agreed they would take the offer.

"We accept. Thank you."

Demi said with a smile and all the former soldiers bowed in respect to their new king and queen. Later, when Gwynn was better, Demi would thank her what she had done today for them. They might have been created to serve the God of Chaos but they were free now to have the same rights as real people.

Maverik slung his crossbow over his back and pulled himself back into the ship. This job was done, but there was still more to do. The ship soared silently and invisibly back to the orphanage where its occupant exited it. He landed behind the orphanage, and came in through the back. All told, he had been gone for only a few minutes.

As Grim ran his axe through a cluster of soldiers, they suddenly faded into a mist and disappeared. He looked, and there were no other soldiers to be seen. No soldiers except for the ones who had surrendered. Grim walked uneasily out from the ice walls and looked around, slightly disappointed. "Is that all?" he lamented, "I was just getting started."
Mikey was just now returning with Mercy, and Grim waved to them to come join them. As Mercy came up, she said, "Who were they?"
"No one," Grim replied, "Figments of a first's power. They weren't real."
"They weren't? Good. I feel bad to think of people enslaved by someone else just because they had some kind of power. What if there is someone like that? That could just make you do something against your will?"
"Guess I'd just have to kill him quickly."
"Grim, be serious."
"I am. You tried to make me do stuff against my will, or not do stuff against my will, as it were, and I could have resisted you."
Mercy smiled, "You tried to. And I only stopped you from doing something. I mean what if they could actually make people do things? Like kill each other, or be slaves, or--"
"To hear Maverik talk, there probably is someone like that. I get the impression from him that there are gods of everything, just like some people used to believe."
"Oh, that's awful!"
"Aye, but let's hope he's not right about all of them. I can think of a few I'd like to keep around. Oh, that reminds me: Gwynn is hurt."
"What! Why didn't you say so?"
"I just did. I told ya I forgot it."
"Where is she?"
"They moved her inside, to get her away from the fighting. Angel is working on her."
Mercy ran for the house, Grim and Mikey in tow. When she came in through the front, she asked: "How bad is it?"

As Mercy came in through the front, Maverik came in through the back. "It is over. They are all dead."

::Angel gasped at how quickly Afon died. He deserved what he got but in a way, it also made her more nervous to be to around Maverik. He could easily just end her life if he felt like it. She didn't trust him, especially when he told her over and over he was going to kill her someday. It made her nervous to be around someone who just end your life so quickly. Especially when she didn't think there was anything she could do change his mind about eventually killing her. She, like all Firsts, were marked for death in his mind and yet she hadn't done and would never do anything like Afon had done. She was born a First and that was something she could never change. Being worried or nervous wouldn't change anything, though. Instead of thinking about it, she focused on what she could control. She smiled at Gwynn.::

You're welcome, I'm glad it's helping a little.

::Gwynn was a strong person that she was holding on despite the injury. Angel was glad that the battle was over and felt the king and queen were making the right choice letting the soldiers who surrendered have a second chance. Despite everything that had happened, her home was still livable, although there would repairs that needed to be done. Other then Gwynn, it seemed there were just minor injuries as well. Milson, Zander, and Jabin started to clean up the orphanage, they didn't want the other kids come and be scared. It was best to try to get things as back to normal as possible. Although some things were broken and would need to be replaced. She continued to heal Gwynn when Mercy came in.::

Gwynn is strong, but she's going to need a lot of rest and more healing.

::Angel replied, trying to word it so Mercy knew the injury was serious but not also freak Gwynn out either. She turned her head when Maverik returned.::

I'm glad it's over. I know you didn't do it for me, but thank you. At least my children will still have a home.

::She was sure Maverik didn't like her at all because she was a First. It wasn't something she could even control but she was grateful that he had stopped the attack. For her family and the children that would come here in the future, she was grateful for his help.::

Mercy nodded to Angel and replied, "Then let me give more healing," as she posed to dance.
"Mercy," Grim said warningly.
"They have already seen what I do, Grim, and they haven't said anything about it. Besides, she needs my help."
Grim frowned, but said, "I suppose you're right. Go ahead."

As Mercy began dancing, Maverik said, "You are correct, Angel. Not for you, but for your children. The quarrels of firsts are their own business, but the protection of people is mine. Now excuse me, I must see to the remains of the first of disorder."
Maverik walked out the front door and saw Demi and the others stand pretty close to where he left them. Barrett and Selene were there as well. Good; perhaps they could learn something.
"Girl, I am glad you have not moved. Come to me and be silent."

When she stood before him, Maverik said to her and to the soldiers, "There is something you need to know, all of you. You are forged from the energy of the first of disorder. He made you with the intent to obey and to kill. Nothing more. That is who you are.
"You were made of raw energy, and that is all you are. Your fellow soldiers who died returned to energy. Should you die, that is what will happen to you. You are mere energy. Nothing more. You are not real, that is what you are, and the sooner you realize this, the easier you will come to terms with reality.
Maverik paused briefly, and continued, "But there are other things in this world that are not real. Love, joy, happiness; these things are not real, yet people will die to protect these things. I see no reason you should not be afforded the same opportunity.
"You are being given the greatest gift that can be given: a chance. You were made to kill and destroy, but you have been given the chance to make your own choices. Do not disappoint me by being no more than who and what you are. Rise about your making, and be something better. Be something good."
Maverik stood stark and waited for her response.

Gwynn and Garnet

Maverik was right that Gwynn needed to save her breath - she didn't feel like she had quite enough of it, since one of her lungs was injured. She counted herself lucky that she could still breathe at all. She smiled at her brother, though, grateful for his kind words and his help. That smile died abruptly when Barrett mentioned Geoffers... but Barrett was already on his way out of the room and didn't see her expression.

Garnet noticed, though, and gave Gwynn's hand another squeeze. "Are you okay?" she asked - meaning about Geoffers, not about her injuries.

Gwynn shook her head. "That hurts... more... than this..." she gasped. "But... has to be... my fault."

At first, Gwynn had felt betrayed and been angry at Geoffers, but she had changed her mind. She knew Geoffers was a good man. The only way a good man would do something like this was if he felt she was giving him no other choice. He must have thought she would hurt him if he said no. It made Gwynn's heart ache to think how violated Geoffers must have felt, having to be with her when he didn't want to. She felt tremendously guilty. Maybe Maverik had been right in the first place. She was a bad First after all.

"That's bull," Garnet said, but her tone quickly softened, because it wasn't Gwynn she was angry at. "You need to go to the hospital, Gwynnie. I'll find someone to take you there."

Garnet left the room, and went and found Barrett - but it wasn't just Gwynn's medical care she needed to discuss. "Just so you know, Geoffers is an ass," she told her brother without sugarcoating. "He was just messing with Gwynn's head all along. He broke up with her today. He said he never loved her, and he was just pretending. He said she wasn't good enough for him. I can't believe I actually let him take me in with his little game. I guess he just likes being a traitor after all."

"That jackass!"

Selene exclaimed. He had seemed to truly love their little sister. They had forgiven him for the things he had done with Dayana and welcomed into their family. How could he do such a thing to Gwynn? She could tell her husband was just as angry as she was and told Barrett.

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll145/sojournfan/demi.jpg

Demi nodded her head when Maverik told her to follow him. She had always been obedient, suddenly having freedom did not change that. She wondered if the Hunter was going to remind her that she wasn't a real person, that the king and queen were crazy to say she and her comrades could have rights when they weren't born the way people traditionally were. When Maverik immediately remained them that they weren't real, it was hard for some of the soldiers to hide their disappointment. Demi kept her face as expressionless as she could. She fully expected the next thing for Maverik to say was that he'd kill them because they had served Seth. So instead, when he said they should have a chance and to use to it be something good, they were surprised. Demi gave the Hunter a smile.

"We will. We'll be more then what Seth believed we could be. We will make the people of Nero proud to have us as citizens."

The other soldiers nodded their heads in agreement. They would not disappoint anyone by being only what Seth had created them to be. He might have created them but they were going to be better people then he had been. They would do good things with their freedom.

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll145/sojournfan/barrett.jpg

Barrett was glad to see that the talk between Maverik and Demi was going well. When Garnet informed him and Selene about what Geoffers had done, he was angry and he instantly felt like a jerk for mentioning him. If he had known, he never would have said his name in front of Gwynn. Barrett cursed loudly and nodded his head to Selene when she said she'd take Gwynn to the hospital.

"Let's go, Garnet. We'll make him pay for hurting her."

He had warned Geoffers that if he ever hurt Gwynn there would be dire consequences. The man was an ass and many other words. They had trusted him, even though he had been a traitor. They had given him a chance and welcomed him into their family when Gwynn said she loved him. Knowing that Geoffers had only pretended to love her back was like a slap in the face. Geoffers was going to be extra crispy for what he did. Geoffers was recovering in his room after almost drowning thanks to Afon. Although he didn't know that he had been played for a fool, he thought Barrett and Selene had truly tried to kill him. He was hoping that Gwynn would return soon so he could figure out what was going on. He was too scared to say anything that the king and queen had done to him. He just asked a servant to let him know when Gwynn came back from the orphanage. Barrett and Garnet arrived in the palace and Barrett was extremely angry to find out the jackass was still in staying in their home. He breaks Gwynn's heart and thinks he can still live in their home? He was either an idiot or an arrogant fool. The maid had no idea what she said but she knew the king and his sister were angry and she quickly made herself busy in another part of the palace. Geoffers jumped in fear when Barrett pushed the door open and it slammed against the wall.

"Barrett, I-"

"Shut your damn mouth!"

Barrett yelled at him, his eyes glowing red with fury. Geoffers swallowed hard and nodded his head. On the trip over, Barrett had agreed to let Garnet say what she wanted to say to Geoffers before Barrett burned him up.

Maverik glanced over at Barret and frowned when he overheard his words. It was bad enough that Garnet was letting her emotions get the better of her reason, but Barrett was talking like a first. Maverik would have to have a word with him later.
Being level-headed most of the time had its advantages. Gwynn's love interest separates from her on the same day as Afon's attack and shortly after the first of mimics appears on the planet? Bigger coincidences have happened, but Maverik knew firsts well enough to guess at the truth.
He turned back to Demi and offered her a small smile. "I am glad to hear it. But words are one thing and actions are another. You have told me; now prove to me. What shall we call you?"

::Angel was surprised that Maverik didn't add that he was going to kill her someday when he agreed he had protected the orphanage for the children and nothing else. She went back to healing Gwynn as Mercy helped with her dancing. Given the extent of Gwynn's injuries she was going to need to go to the hospital. There was no way Angel or Mercy were going to be able to fully heal her. At least their efforts would make sure she didn't die on the way to the hospital either. When she felt they had healed Gwynn enough that she could be moved, she touched Mercy's arm to stop her dancing.::

Thank you, Mercy. I think we've done enough and we should trust conventional medicine to take care of the rest.

::Angel didn't see her powers as a replacement to actual medicine, just as a helper. She added to Mercy with a smile.::

You know, you're also welcome to borrow some of my clothes if you'd like.

::She had noticed that Mercy's outfit needed cleaned and Angel had no issues allowing her to borrow some clothes. Especially when Mercy had been so kind as to help out around the orphanage. She turned to Gwynn and told her.::

I'll get your sister so she can take you the hospital.

::She had overheard enough to know that Selene was waiting for the word to take Gwynn there and also that Geoffers had lied to Gwynn. She wondered if she should comment on that. It didn't seem her place and she wasn't an expert on love. She had married the only man she had ever dated. Still, Gwynn was her friend and she felt she should say something. She gently squeezed Gwynn's shoulder and told her.::

About Geoffers...Whatever happened, it's not your fault. You are a great person and you shouldn't blame yourself when he is the one with the problems.

::Zander had seen Maverik head outside. He was turning 18 in a week, his parents hadn't shielded him like they shielded some of the younger kids from everything going on in Nero. He didn't understand the Hunter. He could get wanting to hunt down Firsts like Afon, Dayana, and Seth. All three had hurt innocent people. But he didn't understand why Maverik hated all Firsts. Not all people were nice, he knew that from experience with his own birth mother and her boyfriends, so not Firsts had to be evil either. His mother wasn't evil, nor was the Royal Family. He waited patiently as Maverik talked to Demi, so he could get a chance to talk to Maverik as well before he left.::

Garnet had been stewing for hours about what she wanted to say to Geoffers - but now that she had the chance, her mind was empty except for the blistering heat of her anger.

"How dare you?" she demanded, even as she wished she had something snappy and witty to say. "How dare you play with Gwynn's heart like this? She's a good person, Geoffers. She didn't deserve this - no matter how much you may claim you had no choice. If you didn't want her, you could have just told her in the first place instead of taking everything you could from her first. It may not have meant anything to you, but it did to her. How could you... how could you rip out a heart like that and stomp on it? I can't believe I defended you. After what you did to Gwynn, obviously you're the monster we convinced Nero you weren't. I feel like an idiot for believing you had changed. Gwynn almost died in the fighting today. Not that you care."

Garnet turned to her brother.

"We can't kill him, Barrett," she said. "Gwynn wouldn't want us to. She'd blame herself, and she'd have to carry that burden forever. Unlike Geoffers, I actually care if Gwynn gets hurt. Just... get him out of here, the sooner the better."

Gwynn

Gwynn tried to smile in acknowledgement of what Angel said, but tears rose in her eyes against her will. She tried to suppress them as she nodded.

"I just want him... to have... a good life. He could have said... not with me..."

It didn't really matter whose fault it was, she supposed. It wasn't like she was going to try again with another relationship. Not just because she was still in love with Geoffers, even if it wasn't reciprocated - in time, hopefully that would fade. Even if she no longer felt anything about him, though, how could she ever give her heart away again, knowing someone else could do the same thing? She'd believed Geoffers without a hint of doubt, and she'd been utterly wrong. Gwynn had thought they might get married, even... but it had all been a lie. How could she trust like that again in the future?

Even the idea of motherhood paled now. She'd imagined raising children with Geoffers, not by herself. That might change too, but what if her children didn't really love her either? How would she ever know, since she couldn't trust her own instincts?

"Thank you... Angel, Mercy... for healing. You saved my life," Gwynn told them, before she and Selene left for the hospital.

Demi tried to assure Maverik. Talk was cheap and actions spoke louder then words. When Selene and Barrett had offered them a chance, all the soldiers had agreed to not to take it for granted. When Maverik asked what they should be called, Demi wasn't sure at first. Seth had never given their people a name and even if he did, they wouldn't want to use it. They wanted to leave their past behind them. She thought a moment and said.

"Call us the Rahu. It means peace in a language I once heard."

They were soldiers of peace now, not chaos. She looked around to make sure the name was acceptable and her fellow soldiers agreed they liked it.

Geoffers said, shocked that they would think they didn't care what happened to Gwynn. Barrett glared at Geoffers and replied.

"Really? You obviously didn't care about-"

"I didn't do those things you're saying!"

"Don't lie!"

"I'm not!"

Geoffers yelled, getting into a yelling match with the God of Fire wasn't a great idea. Out of everyone in the Royal Family, Barrett had the shortest fuse of them all. He was already angry and Geoffers' response wasn't helping. Fire was forming around Barrett's hand and he told Garnet quietly.

"I won't kill him but I'll make sure he won't ever forget what he did."

She said and touched her sister's hand to teleport her to the hospital.

"I know it doesn't seem like it, but it'll be okay. You still have us. We'll never leave you."

She told her little sister with a smile. The doctors were coming and she told Gwynn.

"I'll go get Lizard Dog. I'm sure he's worried."

Angel's children were surely keeping him company but the dog was very attached to Gwynn and Selene was sure he'd like to see Gwynn and Gwynn would need her dog's unconditional love right now as well.

Barrett

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll145/sojournfan/barrett.jpg

Barrett stopped short when Cam suddenly appeared. He had a range of emotions going through him. Confusion, shock, and anger were all there.

"What? How...What the hell is going on?!"

Barrett demanded to know. He couldn't deny that Camillus had just sounded exactly like Geoffers. Geoffers was equally confused.

"Why would you do that?"

Geoffers asked, he couldn't think of any reason why Cam would pretend to be him. Why would he do that? Geoffers had done nothing to him and Gwynn had been very kind to him. What kind of awful game was he playing?

Camillus

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll145/sojournfan/cam.jpg

Camillus took a deep breath and knew that they were all going to hate him when he was done explaining.

"These are my powers, I am the God of Mimicking. I can perfectly mimic anyone's voice and shapeshift into any creature I want."

He said morphing into the dragon that Barrett and Garnet might have seen defending the orphanage and then going back to his human form.

"Before I met you, I was approached by Afon, Dayana, and Seth on my homeworld. They wanted to get revenge on you. They offered me a lot of treasure if I helped them. It was nothing personal..."

Agreeing because of treasure seemed to petty and pathetic now. He shook his head and continued on.

"None of you were supposed to find me. I was a mouse so I could hear your voices but not encounter you, but then that lady chased me with the broom and Lizard Dog found me...By the time I realized what good people you were, it was too late to back out. Even if I didn't want the treasure, I still owed Dayana. When I first awakened, I insulted the God of Shadows. He tried to kill me but Dayana, for some reason, saved my life. She said someday I'd have to repay her for that. She used this attack for that....Dayana used her powers to make Afon look Geoffers and I pretended he broke up with her. Then they kidnapped Geoffers and they pretended to be you and Selene with me doing the voices. That you were fighting about what to do with him and Afon was going to kill him...I couldn't let that happen and I saved him. I brought him here and then I went to the orphanage and tried to help protect it from Seth's army."

He had tried to repair what he had done but it had been a little too late. He was sure any chance he had to be their friends was done and there was no way Garnet would ever want to be near him again.

"What I did was wrong and if I could take it back, I would. I can't and if you want to punish someone for what happened to do, I'm the one you should do it to. You can burn me to crisp or I'll turn into an ant so you can squash me. Whatever you want, just know that Geoffers loves Gwynn and never hurt her."

Garnet

Garnet looked at Camillus in stunned disbelief.

"You... you came here to attack us. I thought we were friends. I thought we could be..."

She'd thought they could be more. How easily she'd been fooled. It had all just been an act, then. All the time he'd been pretending to have fun on their tour, he'd been waiting for the moment when he and his allies would stab them in the back.

"You tortured my sister. Not physically, but if you had any idea what you put her through today..."

Garnet hated to see Gwynn suffer. Focusing on that made it easier to avoid thinking about the betrayal she felt herself.

"She was so happy with Geoffers. Why did you have to ruin it?"

Even now that things were cleared up, Garnet was worried that Geoffers would be so upset by the experience that Gwynn would lose him anyway.

"Geoffers... I'm sorry we doubted you. Obviously you didn't deserve it. Please don't blame Gwynn for this. She's managed to convince herself that she's the one at fault. She only wanted you to be happy, with her or without her."

Gwynn

Gwynn nodded that it would be okay... and that it didn't feel like it would be, even though she knew it would. Nothing could hurt this badly forever. She just had to get through it, and find some way of moving on. She squeezed her sister's hand when Selene said they would always love her. At least she wasn't going to be alone. That would make things alright in the end.

She nodded eagerly that she wanted to see Lizard Dog. At least he would never - could never - lie to her. Dogs were easier than humans, in that sense.

It would be good to rest up and heal. That was what she needed right now.

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll145/sojournfan/barrett.jpg

Barrett looked over at Garnet and could tell from her eyes that Cam's actions had hurt her. Both his sisters had been hurt by this First's actions. It made him angry but something also stuck out for him. Cam said he had saved Geoffers and then tried to help protect the orphanage. Geoffers wasn't surprised that Afon had wanted to get back at him and Gwynn but it was shocking to know that someone they had befriended had stabbed them in the back. Barrett told Geoffers.

"I'm sorry too, Geoffers."

Geoffers replied to Barrett and Garnet.

"It's okay, you both love Gwynn. I understand that but I need to see her so she knows I love her and that I'm happier with her."

He needed to see Gwynn right away, it killed him to know she thought what they had meant nothing to him. Barrett nodded his head in understanding but he wasn't ready to let Cam just go yet.

Demi's face turned a little red. She had thought Maverik only wanted a name for their group, she hadn't thought he'd want to know her name. She figured that he wouldn't see knowing their names as that important.

"I'm Demi."

She replied and then told him the names of the other soldiers. Seth had named them . To some people it would make sense to rename themselves but it would seem to odd to named something else. If she changed her name, she wasn't sure if she'd respond to it. She noticed Zander waiting patiently and told Maverik.

"I believe that young man has something to ask you."

If Garnet was looking at him in hatred, that would be much easier to take. Instead, the look at stunned disbelief made Cam want to turn into a little bug for her to step on. He realized that he wasn't the only one who thought they could have been more then friends. Well, he blew that chance to kingdom come. He hung his head in shame and said.

"It's what Afon wanted and when I agreed, I knew nothing about any of you. Once I did, I wanted to back out but I couldn't."

At least this hadn't changed Geoffers' mind about Gwynn. They'd still be together, that was good. When Barrett asked why he helped, he replied.

"It was the right thing to do. What I should have done to begin with."

Maverik was reassured the names they were given were the names they wanted to be called. He explained to them that they were their own selves, and they could choose what they wished to be called. Demi felt most comfortable with what she had always been called, but she knew at least it was her choice. He noted each name: a couple dozen or more. He would make a point to remember them. He held no animus toward them even though it was Seth that had created them. Not everything firsts did were evil. Most of them even started out good-natured. So sad that none of them stayed that way. Almost none, anyway.
Maverik would keep tabs on them, of course, but for the most part, they were no longer his concern. The Rahu were just another type of people. Maverik was unsure about what the future would hold for them. Would they be immortal because they are beings of energy, or would they slowly waste away, cut off from the first of disorder's power? Could they procreate, and if so, what would the children be like? Could they crossbreed with humans? They might be able to, if Maverik's theory was correct. There were many questions, but these only concerned Maverik for a sheer curiosity. The Rahu would have to learn the answers themselves, and only time would teach them.
To Demi, he replied, "I believe you are correct. And now is the time I shall address him. I have nothing more to say to you, though I suspect the king and queen will want to see you again soon. I wish you good luck in your lives, and may we not meet again under ill terms."
He turned his back to them, and faced Zander, saying, "You are a very well-mannered young man. Your parents should be proud of you."

You'll still have a good life. You have many people who love you.

::Angel tried to assure Gwynn with a kind smile. Although she could imagine how awful it would make her feel if Milson had done this to her. Gwynn had a loving family, that wouldn't totally heal what Geoffers did but it would help it hurt less.::

You're welcome.

::She told her as she and Selene left. Angel and Milson headed to the villa to their children. The older kids had kept the younger ones from being too upset. Lizard Dog, the guards, and the other servants had all done a good job keeping them entertained and the couple was very grateful for that. The children were relieved to see Angel and Milson and there were hugs all around. Zander had been taught patience by Angel, something he didn't always possess in his younger days. He smiled when Maverik said his parents should be proud of him.::

They are, they tell me constantly.

::He wasn't perfect, no child was, but Angel and Milson always worked on positively reinforcing good behaviors in their own children and those they were taking care of.::

I know you're a busy man and I won't take up much of your time but there's something I need to know...Why do you hate the Firsts? I get why you need to take out of some them, like the ones who attacked here, but...Why do you expect all of them to turn "evil"?

::Zander could never see his mother or the Royal Family being like that. They only used their powers to help other people. He took a deep breath as he thought of his own past. He hadn't just been an unwanted child, he had been a horribly abused one. He could have turned out far differently if not for his mother::

Not all humans are good, I know that from my own experience, but we don't go kill all of them. So why do you think all Firsts are bad? It's wrong to judge an entire group of people based on a few.

Maverik's visage change into a frown, although his ever-present scowl was softer than usual, not that Zander would know that. He sighed, and answered slowly. "I do not hate firsts," he said calmly but coldly, "as everyone seems to assume. But to answer your main concern: tell me, what is your name, and how old are you?"
When Zander had told Maverik, Maverik continued, "It may surprise you, Zander (and do not tell this to anyone), but I have lived in total more than ten thousand years by the measure of my planet (only slightly longer than your own years). I have actively hunted firsts for nearly three thousand years by the same measure. I have studied them, observed them, noted their habits as any tracker would. And over that course of time, I have seen every sort, from vicious tyrants to timid pacifists. And all of them save one became corrupted by their first side.
"As I have studied firsts, and material relating to their origins, I have come to a theory. It will be difficult to explain without going into all the details, but the sum of my studies is that firsts are half human and half demon. You see mainly the human part in your adopted mother, but I can see the demon part growing stronger in her. Not just her powers, but a corruption that will eventually turn her into a first like the ones who died here today.
"I wish I were wrong, but thousands of years of experience are hard to deny. Firsts are, by very nature of what they are, bent toward evil. Some might start further down the curve, but they eventually all bend the same direction. It takes a particular sort of human side to bend their nature the other way."

Garnet

Maybe it was irrational, but when Garnet heard that Geoffers still wanted to be with Gwynn, she softened a little toward Cam. Of course, he had nothing to do with how Geoffers would decide to react... but it was easier to consider forgiving him for temporarily wounding Gwynn, than it would have been to forgive him for ruining a loving relationship for good. It was easier to see past things that weren't permanently broken.

Yes, Gwynn had been wounded in the fighting - but she would likely recover. Yes, some of Seth's soldier's had been killed - but they would have died on some battlefield at his orders anyway, and at least some of them were free. At least he wouldn't be making more.

"So, what are you going to do now?" Garnet asked.

Gwynn

Lizard Dog was patient on the trip to the hospital, but when he caught Gwynn's scent, he went galloping off down the hall in search of her. When he found her, she reached out a hand to him weakly. He licked her, then scrambled up on her bed and lay beside her with his head resting on her knee. It was good to have his owner back, and his tail wagged lazily. The tail wagging suddenly increased in speed, and then Geoffers appeared in the doorway; Lizard Dog had smelled and heard him coming, and had no idea there was any issue between Geoffers and Gwynn.

Gwynn was startled that Geoffers was injured too. She hoped he was alright. She wondered if he had come to see her on purpose, or if he'd come to the wrong room by mistake. If he wasn't intending to be here, she needed to get out what she needed to say quickly, or he might leave again before she got a chance.

"I'm sorry," Gwynn gasped. She was pale as death, wrapped in bandages, and still struggling for breath. "I'm sorry I hurt you. I'm sorry I made you unhappy. I just... want you to have a good life."

He probably hated her for what she had done to him, but at least maybe this would help him get over the trauma of feeling forced to be with her, and let him move on.

Demi and the other Rahu assured Maverik they wanted to be called by the names they had been given. They understood they could change them but they decided they didn't want to.

"Thank you, Maverik."

Demi replied to him before he left to talk to Zander. She wasn't just thanking him for wishing them luck in their lives but also for thinking they did deserve a chance at life. It would be easy for some to say they deserved to die because Seth created them. The Royal Family didn't think so and neither did the Hunter their creator had feared. Demi did hope they never had to encounter Maverik on bad terms, though. While Barrett and Selene had family matters to attend to, they sent Jared to help the Rahu learn about Nero and help them decide where they wanted to live. They decided on Pagos, since Eirini had the clay soldiers and Fotia had the T'brryr. Plus colder weather always appealed to the Rahu more then warmer temperatures. Jared promised Demi he'd send for her when Gwynn was up to having visitors.

Barrett wasn't sure what to do about Camillus now. He had done some pretty crappy things but he had also tried to make it right. He'd have to talk to Selene and see what she thought. Geoffers didn't want to wait to see Gwynn and Barrett told he'd take him to the hospital to see her. Barrett felt that Garnet would be okay talking to Cam. If he caused her problems, she still had the crossbow that Maverik had given her. Although, he didn't think the other First would. Geoffers thanked Barrett for teleporting him there. While Barrett went to look for his wife, Geoffers headed to Gwynn's room. He wasn't sure what to think about Cam. He had stabbed them the back, pretended to be him to break Gwynn's heart, and yet he had saved his life. Right now, Geoffers' biggest concern was Gwynn knowing that he hadn't said any of those things. It upset him seeing her hurt, he didn't look that great either. He had almost drowned and his face was covered in cuts and bruises thanks to Afon.

"Oh, Gwynn."

He said and rushed as fast he could to her bed. He sat down and carefully wrapped his arms around her.

"I didn't say those things. Cam did, he can mimic other people's voices. Afon and Dayana had him pretend to be me to hurt you. I love you. You make me very happy and I have a good life because I share my life with you."

At least Gywnn would still have Geoffers and that made it okay. Even if he blew his own chances with Garnet. He was surprised to see her soften a little. He had expected her to hate his guts. He knew from the brief time he had spent with her that she loved her family very much. She and Barrett were very similar in that no one was to mess with their loved ones.

"Take whatever punishment you guys decide."

He replied when Garnet asked what he'd do now. He was still too weakened to return to Naga but even if wasn't, he still wouldn't. He would face the consequences of what he had done today.

"I'm sure you hate me now and I don't blame you. I just want you to know that it wasn't all a lie. The reason I was here was but I really did have fun with you on the tour."

Selene frowned seeing Geoffers until Barrett found her and told her what had happened. She was happy that Geoffers had not said such terrible things but she was shocked that Cam had been behind them instead. Barrett told her that Cam seemed regretful about it and he had tried to make things right. It still hurt to know someone they had tried to be friends with would do something like that. She was sure Garnet felt very betrayed, it hadn't escaped Selene that she seemed to like Cam, a lot.

"What should we do about him? He back stabbed us but his actions didn't hurt Nero's people."

So they couldn't put him in a trial when his crimes were against their own family. Plus there was the fact that he could have just went home after he did what Afon and Dayana had wanted but he hadn't. Instead he saved Geoffers and helped protect the orphanage.

When Geoffers took her in his arms, Gwynn wondered for a second if this was just wishful thinking. Maybe she had finally been overwhelmed by her injuries, and was hallucinating what she wanted to happen. His touch was so familiar, though - it was real. Hard to believe, but it was. She melted into him, burying her face against his chest and letting the tears fall.

"I love you too," she said. "I never stopped loving you."

Gwynn met his eyes, and asked hopefully. "So, you're... you're staying with me? We can still... be together? I don't want to lose you."

"I'll never stop either, I'm sorry you went through today thinking I didn't."

Not that it was actually his fault. He had been a victim in it but he did feel terrible that Gwynn had thought he didn't love her, that he never had. He wiped the tears off her cheeks as he replied.

"Of course, you're stuck with me forever."

He said with a smile and added.

"When you feel better, would you like to get married?"

Geoffers had been thinking about marriage for a little while. He loved being Gwynn's boyfriend but he didn't want to spend the rest of the life they had together as just thought. When, not if, they had the kids they had talked about in the future, he didn't want their children to ever think their family might not last forever. "I do. I won't let you down."

He said but he also knew his word wouldn't mean much. He had lied before and it would take time for Garnet or anyone else to trust him. Actions spoke louder then words and as a First, he had plenty of time.

"What about your brother and sisters, though? I'm sure they won't want me around."

Why would they want him near their sister after what he had done for their enemies? Actually he was surprised Barrett hadn't put him in the burn ward. He probably still would, he had just gotten sidetracked reuniting Gwynn with Geoffers. He was sure Gwynn would hate him, she was very nice, but he didn't think she'd want him near her twin after he almost ruined her life.

::Zander wondered if Maverik was mad for asking, he didn't realize the frown on his face was a softer expression then he usually gave people. Since the man seemed open to talking, Zander replied.::

My name is Zander and I'll be eighteen next week.

::He was almost an adult, although he wasn't ready get to live away from home. His parents had been helping him look for an apprenticeship. He was surprised that Maverik had been alive for that long and how many of those years he spent hunting Firsts.::

Why was the one different? How do you know my mom and the other Firsts here will go that direction? Are you a future teller and all already saw their futures?

::He realized his questioning might sound a little rude. It was just Angel was more of a mother to him then his birth mother ever was and he didn't like hearing that Maverik believed her or their friends had an evil side that they couldn't control. That it seemed certain to the Hunter that someday he'd have to kill them.::

I apologize if I sound rude but I know how evil people can be, and they aren't like that. They aren't like the ones you killed today. Everyone can be good or bad. It's up the person which side they take. What makes you so sure they can't be more human then demon? Have you killed them in the past? And if so, well...Maybe they learned from their mistakes. Like subconsciously, they know what not to do this time around, even if they don't remember their pasts. I just...I don't understand why you judge them and that you're so certain that they'll fail.

Maverik smirked at the inquisitive youth. "No," he replied, "I do not think you are being rude. You have questions, and the only way to get answers is to ask them. However, I do not know that I can give you the answers you seek.
"This one first is the only one I ever let live. Perhaps he too is corrupt, but I believe that he is stronger than the evil inside him. It is he that brought hope back to me; hope that maybe others might overcome their heritage.
"But I cannot tell you why I thought him different. I am observing the firsts of this planet, and I must be convinced that they are of the same nature as he before I grant them their lives. I would not be convinced if I thought they might be acting based on a bit of information someone might tell them. I am sorry I cannot answer that question, but do know there is an answer.
"I do not possess prognostication, or future telling as you call it, and I cannot fully know that they will be like all the others. But as I said, I do know firsts, and be it a year or a hundred years, they have all of them become what you have seen here today. And even of this one I let live I am uncertain; it has only been nineteen years since his awakening. He may still turn evil. But he gave me a reason to give him a chance.
"I have killed three of the five firsts on this planet in the past: the firsts of fire, ice, and nurture. The first of nurture is one of the three firsts that has shaped my opinions of them. The first was the first of destruction, and the only first I truly hate. The second was the first of nurture. When I first heard of him, I thought surely here is one who can do no harm. After all, what harm has ever come from care and nurture? But over the centuries, the futility of entropy and death weighed on him as the corruption spread in his heart and mind."
Maverik paused as he closed his eyes and spoke slowly and softly, "I stood with him on his lifeless planet, a planet he made lifeless. I listened to him tell me that the only way to preserve their lives was to release them from their bodies. Not death, but disembodied spirits, spirits of such an infantile mind. I listened to his intent to do the same for all life in the universe. Then, with a heavy heart, I killed him. There is nothing that can save that planet and all those tortured souls forced to wander there for, who knows? the rest of time, perhaps."
He looked somberly at Zander and continued, "It was that day that I lost my hope, and only recently have I regained it. Perhaps the human halves of the firsts you know are good; such is the case of many firsts, though some have evil human sides as well. What I must know is that their good human side can and will overcome the evil within them instead of being corrupted by it.
"But consider for yourself: would you have been pleased if I had killed Afon before he attacked your orphanage? But what then of the dead he killed in the iron foundry? What if I had killed him before that? What if I had killed him before he hurt anyone? Yet that is the very issue I have before me with the firsts of this planet, except for one who has killed. And how long should I wait; ten years? a hundred? two hundred? or should I wait until I have another conversation with a different young man which goes: 'I see why you had to kill Barrett and Selene, but why do you have to kill my dad? He's not like them.' Do you understand why now?"

Zander

::Zander did have many questions for the Hunter and he was glad that Maverik was willing to take the time to try and answer them. He nodded his head in understanding that he was basing whether other Firsts lived because of the one he had spared and that he could not tell Zander what this god had done to make him different. Zander did understand that reasoning since then the Firsts might act the way they thought Maverik wanted them to act to save their lives, not how they truly were. He was shocked to hear what the last First of Nurture had done to a planet. Zander could never see his own mother doing that. She believed in preserving life as much as possible but also understood that things lived and died. She'd try to save lives but she'd never try to stop the natural order of things either. Death was a part of life.::

This First of Nurture...Is that my mom? Is their souls the same? I mean, after you killed him, was the First of Nurture reborn as my mother?

::He wasn't sure if Maverik would truly have an answer but wouldn't Firsts be immortal, in a way? That after they were killed, they would just be reborn again...That made Zander think that Maverik's job would truly never be done. The gods of Floods, Chaos, and Order would just be reborn again as other gods eventually. Perhaps they'd be good or maybe they'd just repeat their mistakes. He thought a moment about Maverik's question about Afon. People would have been spared if Maverik had killed him sooner but Maverik didn't know what the god would have done either. Zander shook his head.::

No. He did terrible things but that's his fault, not anyone else's. You had no way of knowing what he was capable of. He made his own choices and that's what caused his death. It's not right to kill someone just because you think they might hurt you. Everyone has the right to live until they prove through their actions otherwise.

::Zander had a better understanding of the Hunter now and he wasn't as scared that the man would suddenly show up into their home one night and murder his mother. He believed in his heart that his mother was a good person, that her human side would win over whatever demon side she and other Firsts had. Although he also believed now that Maverik was watching Angel closer then some of the other Firsts because of what the last First of Nurture had done.::

I do understand better. Thank you.

Gwynn

"It's not your fault," Gwynn said. "You didn't do anything wrong. You couldn't have known what was happening. There's nothing you need to apologize for. I'm just sorry you got hurt too."

When Geoffers asked Gwynn to marry him, she was surprised in a way, since she hadn't expected him to say that - but it also felt like the natural next step in their relationship. He was her soul mate. She wanted to be with him for as long as she possibly could.

Suddenly, Gwynn's injuries didn't hurt as much. She was too happy to feel the physical pain sharply... and her body was less tense and more relaxed, because if Geoffers wanted to marry her, he was definitely going to stay and they would be together.

She snuggled against him and said, "Of course I'll marry you. I love you. I want to be your wife." Gwynn grinned, and then not wanting to be impolite, added, "Thank you for asking me."

Her expression became serious again, and she said quietly, "The only thing is, I can't guarantee I'm going to live a long time. A lot of people seem to want me dead lately. Do you still want me, even if it only turns out to be for only a little while? I don't want to leave you sad."

Garnet

Garnet accepted without argument Cam's promise not to let her down again, but she was going to have to see it for herself. It would take time for her to trust him again... but she was willing to give him that time. She thought her family would feel the same way.

"Barrett and Selene will stay out of it," Garnet replied honestly. "You'll have to prove yourself to them too, but they'll give you a chance. They aren't the ones who were hurt the most, so they won't want to be the ones to make the decision. Gwynn will be fine. She's pretty forgiving."

She cracked a smile. "You probably noticed she's limping? I accidentally shot her in the leg with my crossbow. She wasn't even upset. She and Geoffers will make up, and it'll be fine."

Garnet patted him on the arm reassuringly. Making physical contact was slightly awkward after what had transpired, but she felt like the air was a little clearer on her own end at least having done so.

"They'll forgive you. They've forgiven people for worse things than this. It'll just take time for them to feel like they can rely on you."

"I know. I just don't like the idea of you being hurt."

Geoffers replied to Gwynn when she said what happened wasn't his fault. He knew it wasn't but he didn't like that Gwynn had been hurt both emotionally and physically today. At least she'd be okay, that was all that mattered in the end. He grinned when Gwynn said yes to the proposal and wrapped his arms around.

"Thank you for saying yes."

He replied to her first comment and at her question, he said.

"I'm sure. I'd rather have whatever time we do have together, then live a thousand years never knowing you."

Of course, if he had never met Gwynn, he wouldn't be able to live that long. He had her blood running through his body, so he wasn't sure how long he did have in life. However long he did live, he wanted to spend those years with Gwynn. Whether it was one year or a hundred.

Camillus nodded his head in understanding that Selene and Barrett would stay out of it but he'd still have to prove to them he deserved a chance. His actions had hurt Garnet and Gwynn more then them, so it made sense for the couple to be cautious of him but willing to give him a chance if their little sisters would. He smiled a little when Garnet brought up Gwynn's limping.

"Well, of course she gave forgave you, you're her sister."

He doubted that Garnet could do much to keep her family angry at her. He wasn't sure if Gwynn and Geoffers would be nearly as forgiving. He did help Afon try to ruin their lives. It was hard for him to get the image of how upset Gwynn had been when she thought Geoffers didn't love her out of his head. He looked down at her hand touching his arm and placed his hand on top of hers. She had far more confidence in how her family would react then he did.

"I should talk to Gwynn, apologize to her and Geoffers for what I did."

Then he could see what he should do next. If Gwynn and Geoffers wanted him to get lost, then he would. If they were willing to forgive him, then maybe he could forgive himself too.

"I don't like the idea of you being hurt either," Gwynn said. "Are you sure you're okay?"

The injuries Geoffers had suffered looked painful but not life-threatening. Gwynn cared about him, though, so she couldn't help being concerned.

"Good," she replied when he said he wanted to be with her, no matter how long they had. Being a First seemed to mean having a lot of enemies. "I hope I'll be around for a long time. None of us can ever be sure, though. I love you, Geoffers. I'm so excited to be your wife."

It seemed unreal, but wonderfully so, like a good dream. It felt good to lie in Geoffers' arms, and to know that they would be married soon.

"I think that's a good idea," Garnet said.

Geoffers and Gwynn had had some time alone to work things out, and it was better to get the potentially difficult conversation with Cam out of the way as soon as possible. Nothing would be gained by a delay. At least once everything was on the table, they could sort it out and move on.

"I'll take you to her. Just... remember how badly Gwynn is hurt, and try not to make her upset."

It probably wasn't going to be a problem, but Garnet didn't want things to get worse. She walked Cam to the hospital, and asked the nurse where to find Gwynn's room.

"I love you too and I can't wait until we get married."

He replied to her and held her close. He was excited that soon they'd be married. He was sure that Gwynn's siblings would be happy now that they knew that he had never tried to break Gwynn's heart. Getting married would be a new start in life and he thought it would be a good one. That would mean he was truly moving forward and leaving his past mistakes behind. He was looking forward to a future with Gwynn. When Garnet brought Cam to see them, Geoffers was quiet. He knew the First's reasoning for what he did but it would take time to forgive him. Camillus wasn't really looking forward to this talk but it was best to get it out of the way. It would be worse delaying it. He'd rather get it over with and move on. If he wasn't welcome on Nero, it was best to find out now before his crush got even bigger on Garnet.

"I'll try not to."

Cam told Garnet, he was sure Gwynn wasn't going to want to see him. She kept her dog from eating him and he repays her by making her think her boyfriend never loved her. His nervousness grew as they got closer and closer to Gwynn's room. At least she and Geoffers were together, he thought. It was clear from the way they were holding each other, that Cam hadn't ruined their relationship. He took a deep breath and said to Gwynn.

Gwynn felt extremely awkward around Cam after what had transpired. She'd done her best to help him and take care of him when he'd been a mouse... and then he'd seen her at one of the worst moments of her life. He'd seen her cry. He'd caused the tears. It was hard to act normal after that.

She forced a smile, though, and said, "Hi, Cam. It's okay. Everything turned out alright."

Yes, she'd been badly injured... but she hadn't lost Geoffers, and now she was getting married. That was worth the pain. It had been a tough day - and she wasn't planning to let Geoffers out of her sight in the immediate future - but all was well that ended well, wasn't it?

"Thank you for the apology, Cam. You saved my life, so we're good."

The past couldn't be changed, so there was no point being upset about what had happened. Cam had saved his life when Afon tried to kill him. So to Geoffers, Cam had redeemed himself a little. He was sure Gwynn wanted to tell people herself about their engagement and that would be something good to focus on instead of what happened today.

Especially since Garnet said that Barrett and Selene would respect whatever decision their younger sisters decided. His smile got bigger when Gwynn told them the good news. Although he did chuckle when Garnet asked what Gwynn had said. If Gywnn was happy, it seemed pretty obvious she had said yes.

"That's great. Congratulations."

He told them and truly meant it. Selene and Barrett came not to much longer and were thrilled at the news. Both gave Gwynn and Geoffers hugs. Cam stayed in the room but stayed back, he didn't want to be a bother and quietly asked Selene and Barrett when he got a chance.

"They said they forgive me and want to give me a chance. Is that something you're okay with?"

He didn't want Selene and Barrett quietly seething that Cam was around their family. Selene nodded her head.

"Yes, if they are willing to give you a chance, we will too."

When Barrett agreed with his wife, Cam felt a big weight get lifted off his shoulders. It would take time to forgive himself for his actions but at least he didn't have to worry about Garnet's family hating him. "Thank you. Both of you."

He added when Cam offered up his congratulations as well. He also thanked Barrett and Selene when they joined them. The couple was thrilled for them. Barrett wasn't that surprised that Gwynn and Garnet were willing to give Camillus another chance. Since his sisters were willing forgive him, Barrett was too. He nodded his head in agreement at what Selene said.

"Just remember, you only get one second chance."

If he failed, then Barrett wouldn't be so nice. Although it seemed to him that Cam wouldn't fail. He seemed truly regretful for what he did and it also seemed he like Garnet, a lot. Still, Barrett felt the need to make sure the warning was there and Cam nodded his head in understanding. Luca and Jared were happy for the newly engaged couple, although they hadn't just arrived to give congratulations. Demi had asked to see Gwynn and they had brought her.

Maverik nodded at Zander and replied, "That is good. I do not ask you to agree with my way of thinking, but if you can understand it, that is a start. But do also understand that I do not hate your mother, as I have said, because of what the previous first of nurture did. They are the same firsts, the same 'spirit' if you will, but they are different 'souls,' different persons. I do not hold her guilty of her heritage; yet neither I will not tolerate her making the same choices, or others of equal wickedness.
"Now, Zander, if you are of a strong constitution, I would like your assistance. There is most likely a dead first still in your living room. I would like to move him and his fellows into the field. If the others see fit to bury them, or give them a pyre as I have known some firsts to prefer, that will be their business. If not, nature will take its course. If you cannot handle the sight of gore and death, I understand, and it is nothing to be ashamed of. But it will make my task considerably easier if you can."
Maverik went inside and found his assumptions were correct. Knealing over the body of Afon, he searched it. It was Garnet's pendant he wanted. He could not understand what value it had been to Afon, and was even more puzzled when he could not find it. He did find a similar pendant around Afon's neck, but it was not Garnet's. Still, he took this off the first's neck and placed it in the pocket of his coat. Perhaps it was Dayana that had wanted the amulet. He would search her body next.

After all, she had knew all of Afon, Seth, and Dayana's plans. They were the ones that made her bring Cam back to Nero. During the heat of the battle, she had not thought to say anything. She was happy to see that Cam had fessed up to his sins on his own. She also happy that Geoffers and Gwynn were back together.

Maverik and Zander moved Afon out into the field far enough away from the orphanage that the curious children would not readily find him. As they passed through the orphanage to get Dayana, Garnet and Camilus met them there. Maverik listened as Garnet gave her report. He smirked wryly as Garnet mentioned that she had accidentally shot Gwynn. "And here I thought I would have to shoot Gwynn when it seems you are more than ready to do it for me," he said flatly. It was hard to tell if he was joking, but one could only assume he must be. Maverik's range of displayable emotions appeared rather limited.
He continued, "All joking aside, I am glad that you are learning to use it. I cannot always be near to protect you; you were lucky today that I was. And I am happy that Gwynn will survive, for your sake at least if not for hers." It may he thought, make things more difficult for you and I later if I do have to kill her. Her death today by a shared enemy would have made losing her easier for us than if I have to kill her it. Although, perhaps I will not have to do it, but I cannot yet tell you this, Garnet.
Turning his thoughts and his face to the newcomer, he said, "I do not recognize your face, but I can make an educated guess at who you are: the First of Mimics. Listen carefully to what I say: as long as you are not here to cause trouble for the people of this planet, or to use Nero to settle whatever disputes you have with the firsts of this planet, I will tolerate you for now. I am after a very dangerous first, the first of portals. Know this, however: Once I have done with him, I will kill you."
It was not said with anger, happiness, or sadness. It was a statement of fact, as if Maverik was saying water is wet or rocks are hard. It was not a threat, nor a promise. It was just a statement of the inevitable course of events. Unless, of course, something changed. And, despite what everyone seemed to think of Maverik, he hoped something would change.

Barrett was excited and nervous at the same time when Dr. Cierce told them that the reason Selene wasn't feeling well was because their son had decided it was time to be born. He hoped he'd be a good father and he wished he could do more for Selene then just hold her hand and tell her she was doing well. Which she was and he was proud of her. It was just hard to see the person you love in pain. He had a big grin on his face when the doctor handed Selene their son. He sat down next to Selene and put his arm around her shoulders and gave her a side hug.

"He is, you did great. I love you too, little guy."

He kissed her cheek and gently touched his son with his finger. Babies truly were an amazing thing. It was a little hard for him to believe that his and Selene's love had a created this little baby. After giving the new parents some alone time with their son, word spread around the palace and soon the rest of the world that Prince Liam had been born and that he and his mother were doing great.

Garnet

Garnet assumed Maverik was joking about killing Gwynn - but she still only grimaced in response. The day her sister had almost died wasn't the day to make light of that possibility. It wasn't something she could take in a lighthearted way, after it had almost happened. She and Maverik had always had major differences... but after what he said to Cam, her anger boiled over.

"What's your real angle?" Garnet demanded of Maverik. "What aren't you telling us? Because what you've said might be true, but you haven't told us all of it - or else you're totally contradicting yourself. You claim you have to kill Firsts before they turn bad? Well, that would actually make some degree of sense... except that Firsts don't stay dead. They come back in another form. You should be damn glad Gwynn survived today - not for yourself, or even for me, but because if she died she could come back as someone like Afon. It's completely illogical to kill relatively harmless Firsts knowing they could come back as harmful ones, and that it's because of what you did. Cam has promised to make up for his mistakes, and we're all willing to forgive him. You're the only one who isn't, Maverik. So I'm going to ask again... what's really going on? What's your real agenda? I'm not going to let people I care about be pawns in some game you're playing."

She gave a little self-mocking snort, and added, "By the way, Gwynn wants me to invite you to her wedding. She's amazingly persistent, even in the face of obvious failure."

Gwynn

"I'm sure they'll be fine," Gwynn agreed, and meant it - but she couldn't help being nervous anyway. Being born seemed fraught with peril. So many things needed to go right.

Gwynn was too exhausted to stay awake worrying, though, so she dozed on and off. Her body needed the rest, to start recovering from her injuries. It felt good to have Geoffers beside her.

"I feel safe," she told him. "Because you love me, and I knew who you were after all."

She was thrilled to get the news that her nephew had been born... and she couldn't help thinking about the day she and Geoffers would become parents in the future, too.

Maverik listened patiently to Garnet's tyrade. She had had a hard day; and while Maverik did not like that she was still allowing her emotions to outpace her reason, she was no worse than should be expected.
He looked sternly at Cam and replied, "Cam, it seems you are taking the news better than she is. As you heard her say, my name is Maverik, by the way."
He turned he stern glare toward Garnet and replied, "It has been a long day for you, considering it is barely after noon. But do not let how you feel cloud how you think. Try to keep a calm and clear mind even when you are upset.
"Now, you have accused me of having ulterior motives for killing firsts. I will overlook the slight based on the day that you have had. Yet I have been ever clear of my objective: to eliminate the threat of firsts. Yes, firsts are immortal, but just because a first is reborn does not mean it happens immediately. The universe will enjoy a short respite where there is no first of order, no first of disorder, no first of floods: just the laws of nature operating they way they were intended to do. It may be only a few hundred years, I have known a few to be longer than a thousand. And in all that time they are a threat to no one. Then there is, of course, the awakening process which may take over a century for them to fully awaken, in which time they are a diminished threat to anyone. Yet a threat still; and if I can eliminate that threat while it is a relatively harmless one, I will. And though I cannot eliminate them entirely, I can do my best to stem the tide."
He would liked to have continue on about how easily she trusted the "relatively harmless" firsts. How she never suspected them of any ulterior motive. And why not? Because they once spared her life? And they could have no other motive than the kindness of their heart, could they? Nothing to gain personally? Maverik had saved her life, too; twice now. And he was perfectly frank about his own motives for doing so. Why did he receive such careful scrutiny and distrust and yet her family was spared from such inspection?
He would have liked to say that, but tact said he should not. Now was not the time to have that discussion. He did bring one other thing to her attention, saying, "My motivations aside, however, I assume you are forgiving Cam for how he took Geoffers form to break Gwynn's heart, or are there other mistakes he has promised to make up that I should know about?" Here he passed an inquiring glare toward Cam.

Garnet

Garnet sighed, and decided not to argue. What difference could her words make at this point? If seeing a First willing to sacrifice her life for someone Maverik himself admittedly didn't give a damn about wasn't enough to make him question his assumptions that he was the better species, then nothing she could say would. Maybe he'd been consistent all along. Maybe it was Garnet herself who had slipped - maybe they all had, by treating him like a friend when he refused to be one. It led to ridiculous situations like the wedding invitation for a potential guest who wanted the bride dead. All because they had forgotten they had a killer in their midst.

Not a heartless killer. Garnet didn't believe Maverik was heartless, after having known him. If he had been, he wouldn't have bothered saving her life. Just continuing to exist wasn't enough for Garnet anymore, though. Now that she wasn't alone, her family mattered more to her than just living another day did. But how could Maverik possibly understand that giving back what meant less didn't replace wanting to take what meant more?

She couldn't help thinking that Afon might have been right after all. That thought wasn't one of vindication or even of anger... but rather, of deep sadness. Garnet didn't want Maverik to die. In other circumstances, she would have done what little she could to protect him. After what he had just said, though - how determined he still was to pursue his mission - Garnet didn't see how fighting back could be construed as anything other than self-defense.

It was another absurdity, wasn't it? A large part of this mess had started because the Firsts of Nero had refused to help Afon attack Maverik, insisting that blood didn't have to be shed... but the limb they had gone out on didn't make one iota of difference to Maverik. They had known it wouldn't. It wasn't Maverik's fault - he was what he was - but maybe Afon had offered them their only chance.

And yet, Garnet was sure that even knowing that wouldn't have changed her family's decision, because how Maverik would respond hadn't even been a factor in the choice. No one had so much as mentioned his possible reaction, because his reaction didn't determine what was right.

Garnet knew she was a lot more conflicted about Maverik than the Firsts in the family were... but it was because they expected nothing from him. After skirting the possibility of being friends, Garnet had a much higher emotional stake in the subject. She couldn't help feeling a kinship with the Hunter, even though she knew it wasn't going to end well. Even though when sides had to be taken, she'd be on the opposite one. Even as she was grateful to Maverik for a lot of things, she resented that he was going to be the one to force her to choose.

"Cam came here allied with the people who wanted to use Nero as the battleground destroy our family," Garnet said shortly. "He indirectly. participated in the attack on this planet. Nothing you don't already know, Maverik. Plenty of other people have been forgiven here for worse things, though. Nero would have a lot more corpses otherwise. There doesn't have to be any more violence today. It's done. We're very grateful for your help in fighting off the attack, Maverik. Having you there made all the difference."

Garnet was glad she couldn't cry, no matter how emotionally overwhelmed she felt, because it was really starting to get to her having her loyalties not only divided between her family and Maverik, but now Maverik and Cam. Much as she didn't want to admit it, things were reaching a point where she knew she might not be able to sustain any sort of friendship with the Hunter much longer. Maybe it was for the best that he was bringing things to a head by directly threatening Cam - but that didn't make it any easier.

Realizing Zander was being somewhat left in the dark, she explained, "You and your family and the other kids from the orphanage are invited to the wedding too, of course. Gwynn and Geoffers are getting married, and I know it would mean a lot to them to have their friends there."

"Actually," Maverik corrected, "I did not know these things. Cam and I will need to talk. Later, however. There are other things that I need to do at the moment. However, give me your hand."
As she obliged, Maverik took the back of her hand in his. As he did, with his other hand, he gently placed something in her palm. "This is Afon's pendent. I could not find yours, although I have not yet searched Dayana or the first of disorder. I think it ironically appropriate for you to have it. It may have a small remnant of his power in it, though I doubt it has enough to power you. Since you were designed to imitate first energy, you may find it gives you his abilities, although in very, very diminished form."
Before he let go of the back of her hand, he placed his other hand on her shoulder, perhaps subconsciously putting himself between Garnet and Cam. He looked straight into her face and added, "Remember what I told you: trust me to do the right thing. I may surprise you." There were so many things he wished he could tell her. Things about his real methods. About how fear makes a wonderful motivator. About how he wanted to challenge them to introspection. How he saw so many of the signs of redemption in Gwynn. About his final test. But he could not tell her for the same reasons he could not tell Zander; perhaps even moreso. Fortunately, anger made a good motivator, too, although it tended to make people irrational. Even Maverik had problems with that. He could only hope that Garnet's anger would lead her to think it out for herself.
He tried to convey all that in the short, simple sentence of "trust me," but he doubted that he had. Expression was something that he had lost much through the long years of hardships. Plus, so very few people had ever trusted a man who said he planned to kill people. Strange though, that such honesty would meet such distrust. Still, Garnet he believed him, and even tried to understand him, which was more than anyone had done for years. Perhaps she would come to trust him as well.
Maverik began to walk out, and said over his shoulder, "Tell Gwynn that unless something dire arises, I will be at her wedding. I would like to tell her myself, though, but I may not have time. If I do not tell her before the day's end, please do so for me. Zander, if you are ready?"

Geoffers knew that Gwynn was worried, it was only natural. Selene was a First and had good medical care but something could always go wrong. All they could do was wait for news. He wrapped his arms around her and held her. After almost dying, she definitely needed to get some sleep.

"You'll always be safe with me. I love you too."

He told her and took a little nap with her while Selene was in labor. When the news came that Nero now had a new prince, he was thrilled as well.

"When you feel up to it, I'll wheel you down the hall to see him."

He told Gwynn, she wasn't ready to get out of bed on her own but he was sure she'd like to meet her nephew soon. Like Gwynn, he also thought it would be nice to someday be a parent. Now that he knew they'd be together for the rest of their...well his life, he wanted to have kids with her.

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll145/sojournfan/cam.jpg

Camillus had thought the joke about Gwynn was a little out of taste since she had almost died but he didn't know Maverik and wasn't sure what to say to him. He didn't take that much offense for being told he was going to die. Everyone who been awakened long enough knew that Maverik wanted to kill all Firsts. He was sure there was nothing he could or say that would change the Hunter's mind. If he wanted to kill someone like Gwynn, what hope did he have convincing him otherwise? He was actually more surprised that what Maverik had said to him had caused Garnet to lose her temper. He touched her arm and told her quietly.

"It's okay."

He then turned to Maverik and said.

"I know who you are and what you do. I also know I could plead until I'm blue in the face for my own life and it wouldn't make a difference to you."

Cam felt that Maverik was cold and he'd just do what he wanted. He wasn't going to beg him or kiss his feet to save his own life. His idea of staying cool and collected in front of the Hunter started to go away at the glare Maverik gave him. He glared back.

"Part of the reason I agreed to help them because killing you seemed like a good idea."

Sure he had thought treasure sounded good but he did agree with Afon that Maverik was a threat to their lives and needed to be taken out. It shocked him that the Firsts of Nero had an alliance with him. Once Janus was dead, he was sure Maverik would go back to his killing all Firsts agenda.

"But Garnet says she and her family have a temporary alliance with you and I'll respect that."

He made a face when Maverik put himself in between Cam and Garnet. He didn't fully understand the Hunter. He said he wanted to kill all Firsts and yet he was willing to help Garnet. He made no sense.

Garnet

Maverik had managed to surprise Garnet twice within the space of a couple of seconds.

"Thanks," she said, as she accepted Afon's amulet from him. "The power of these things is tied to the owner, but maybe we can find a way to bypass that."

It opened another possibility, Garnet realized. Now that she didn't need Gwynn's amulet as a power supply, she could give it back - except that it no longer recognized Gwynn as its owner, and would be a useless lump of rock to her now. If they could get Gwynn's necklace back... and if Garnet could get it to recognize Gwynn again... then Gwynn would be better able to protect herself. Garnet could experiment with Afon's amulet without consequence, and if it worked and its opposite could be recovered, she could surprise Gwynn. That was a much better thought than leaving her sister to the tender mercies of the many people who seemed determined to attack her while her strength was low.

It surprised her even more that Maverik was willing to go to Gwynn's wedding, and that surprise showed on Garnet's face. Even Gwynn hadn't really expected him to show up; she was inviting him as a courtesy, so he wouldn't feel excluded when he found out that everyone else was invited. Gwynn had expected this to be rejected like the dinner invitation.

"She'll be very pleased," Garnet said truthfully. "I'll tell her if you don't get the chance."

Gwynn really would be pleased, Garnet thought. She'd be thrilled, in fact. Garnet was also worried that she might get the wrong impression, though. Gwynn might think that her campaign to make friends with Maverik was succeeding, as she'd managed to befriend so many others. Soon he'd find himself invited to holidays and social gatherings. And Gwynn would have painted a target on herself because she'd let her guard down.

The part of what Maverik said that Garnet was having trouble accepting wasn't the trust me. That wasn't difficult to do. The part that wasn't clicking was the do the right thing... and the problem was that Maverik had already asserted plenty of times what he believed the right thing was, and it was the opposite of what Garnet wanted. She did, in fact, trust him to do what he saw as the right thing. And that itself was the issue.

What came next was between Cam and Maverik, and Garnet didn't intervene. Not until Maverik had a chance to answer. She waited tensely to see what he would say.

Shadowseldil

"Then that is a start," Maverik said, without looking at him, calmly but coldly, in reply to Cam's slightly snide tone, "though it is more of a truce than an alliance. But as long as you will side with them, then I will include you as well. But we still must talk later. And when it comes to it, remember that pleading for mercy will serve you better than fighting for you life."
Maverik tried to remember: he did not think any had ever tried pleading for mercy. They almost all of them had fought. Some tried running and hiding, cursing his name as they did so. But none had ever begged; in fact, he could not remember any of them even asking. Ever. "Please, Mister Maverik, would you let me live? I'd like that an awful lot," would probably go pretty far with him.
Of course, Maverik's cold and lifeless tone did not suggest that begging was an option, making it sound just a futile as fighting would be. Part of it was the weakness in Maverik's communication skills, but part of it was also that Cam needed to think it was fruitless. If he expected to have no hope of winning Maverik's favor, he would not be trying to do it, and Maverik could judge his actions as the genuineness of his character.

Gwynn

Gwynn was thrilled when she heard that she had a new nephew.

"This is the best day ever!" she said enthusiastically.

Yes, she had been run through with a pike, almost died, and lost a chunk of her ear - but that all seemed minor in comparison to the good things. She was getting married, and Selene and Barrett's baby was safe and healthy, and the Rahu were her new friends. It surely couldn't get any better than that.

"I'd like to see them," Gwynn replied. She didn't want to interrupt the new mother and father's time with their baby, but when they said they were ready for visitors, Gwynn accepted Geoffers' offer to wheel her down for a visit.

"Congratulations!" she told them. "He's so cute. And little. I didn't know he'd be that small. I'm so happy to be an aunt!"

Gwynn was sure the people of Nero would be excited to hear they had a prince.

"I'll keep it in mind."

Camillus replied although he was a little confused that pleading would work better then fighting. It seemed pathetic to beg. Of course, perhaps the Hunter wanted his ego inflated and wanted to hear a powerful First pleading for his or her life. Cam wasn't as arrogant as the three Firsts that had been killed today but he couldn't see himself begging. He didn't care what Maverik thought of him. From what he heard, it was impossible to change the stubborn man's mind. Cam was more concerned about what Garnet thought of him. He'd try to prove himself worthy of his second chance in her eyes.

It amazed Selene that she and Barrett had created this little person. She already wondered what Liam would look like when he got older and what his personality would be like.

"You can hold him."

Geoffers chuckled when Gwynn announced today was the best day ever. Most people would say if they went through half the stuff she had, that their day was at least ending well. Not call it the best one ever but that's one of the reasons he loved Gwynn, she never let that bad stuff keep her down long. She also focused on the good things in life, a trait he was starting to pick up on. He gave her a kiss and told her.

"It's becoming one."

He helped her into the wheelchair and wheeled her down to Selene's room and offered his congratulations as well. Barrett was grinning like all proud fathers did.

"Thank you. You'll be a great aunt."

Geoffers agreed and thought watching Gwynn hold Liam that someday she'd be a good mother too. It seemed pretty natural to see her with a small child. She was good with children and he was sure that Liam would adore her and Garnet very much when he was older.

"Why you do bother? He's not going change his mind. Once he gets Janus, then he'll go back to business as usual."

Maverik seemed far too stubborn and set in his ways to ever change his mind that all Firsts should die. Of course, he had missed Zander's talk with the Hunter and him admitting he was waiting to see if they deserved to live like the First he had spared did.

Shadowseldil

Maverik nodded to Garnet and began leaving. "If I find your pendant," he added over his shoulder, "I will give it to Gwynn when I see her later. If you are not with her, I mean."

He and Zander went out and took the bodies of Dayana and Seth and lay them together in the field with Afon. Part of him wanted to give them one final warning; a caution to be better in their next lifetime, but the realist part of him said it was pointless. They could not hear it anyway, and he had nothing to prove to himself or to Zander by saying it.
Maverik was not the cheeriest of companions. He did not speak unless he was spoken to; and even then he only spoke if he felt he was required to do so. Maverik's communication skills leaned toward efficiency rather than cordiality. Still, he was polite when he spoke, and tried to answer whatever questions Zander might have asked him.
As they returned to the orphanage for the final time, Maverik said, "Thank you, Zander. You were quite helpful and saved me much time. I appreciate it greatly. I am sorry I cannot stay to help you clean up the orphanage, but there are other things that require my attention. I may not often be around, but if I am, and you need my help, do not hesitate to ask. I may not be available to help, but I will do what I can."

With that, Maverik walked out of sight. He was not quite sure where they had taken Gwynn, but he could soon find her with the tracking devises on his ship. Once certain no one was watching, Maverik boarded his ship. The sun would not be far from setting when he finally came into the hospital. Conventionally. It was not his preferred method to use something so public as the front doors, but there was no second story in this hospital, and Gwynn was probably in no condition to be surprised.
He walked in, no questions, no hesitation. He had an aire about him that said he knew exactly what he was doing. Even so, he tried to avoid being seen whenever it was convenient to do so. When he arrived at Gwynn's door, he knocked softly.

Gwynn

It had been a long day for Gwynn, although it had turned out to be a good one in the end. She was exhausted and very much still on the mend from her injuries. Geoffers was reading to her, as he'd promised he would when he had recovered enough to do so. Gwynn leaned against him, not yet ready for more sleep but glad that not much was being expected of her at the moment.

Lizard Dog was on the bed beside them, with his head resting on Gwynn's leg. It hadn't occurred to Gwynn to consider whether dogs were allowed in hospitals - it would have surprised her that they typically weren't - and since she was Gwynn, no one had the heart to tell her otherwise.

When the knock came on the door, Gwynn called, "Come in!"

She assumed anyone who would bother coming to see her was one of her friends, and she would always have time for them no matter how tired she was.

Garnet

Garnet sighed when Cam asked why she bothered trying with Maverik. It was a question she had asked herself over and over, but even in the privacy of her own mind, she wasn't sure of the answer.

"I don't think it's hopeless," she said, after a moment of trying to figure out how to explain things. "He's not an evil person. I know that's hard to believe, because he's doing bad things sometimes... but he has a heart, and it's the heart of a decent man. At first, I found that really hard to accept. As I've gotten to know him better... well, sometimes I still think the same thing you do. Sometimes it seems like what he's going to do is inevitable. Other times, I think he's listening more than we realize, and maybe his mind isn't as made up as he implies."

She held up her own hand, looking first at her palm, then at the back of it. She brushed her fingers against Cam's hand to demonstrate what she was about to tell him.

"Not warm either," Garnet said ruefully. Her hands weren't cold, but nor were they ever warmer than the ambient temperature around her. "Maverik and I are the same sort of creature. Made, not born. Treated as nothing more than a thing or an agenda. I guess that's one of the reasons I care what happens to him, and want to bother trying."

She shrugged, and smiled suddenly. "Or maybe Gwynn is just rubbing off on me. Usually she's the one who tries to get everybody to be happy friends, not me."

Maverik opened the door and walked in. "I hear you are doing better," he said promptly, without any greeting, "I need to talk to you. In private," he added, looking purposely at Geoffers. "Do not worry about your fiancée; I only wish to talk. But I must do so with her alone."

Gwynn

Gwynn nodded; she wasn't particularly worried. Maverik had threatened over and over that he would kill her - if he'd actually decided today was the day, he wouldn't suddenly start lying about it. Nor would he likely bother sending Geoffers away.

"It's okay, Geoffers," Gwynn told him, and touched her fiancé's arm reassuringly. "I'll be fine. Could you take Lizard Dog outside for a few minutes? He could probably use a potty break."

Lizard Dog looked up and wagged his tail, indicating that she was right about his needs. Gwynn couldn't walk well enough after her injury to take him out, but Geoffers and Lizard Dog got along well and Lizard Dog would happily go outside with him.

Camillus

Garnet had a seen a side of Maverik that Camillus hadn't. As far as most Firsts thought, Maverik was the enemy and he should be killed before he could kill them. He was quiet as he listened to Garnet.

"He saved you."

It wasn't a question. He remembered Dayana and Afon all proud of themselves for ripping out Garnet's amulet and angry that Demi reported that Garnet was alive. The fact that Maverik had been trying to find it showed that he cared for her a little. Maybe because they were similar. Maybe that's why he hadn't taken out the Royal Family of Nero or Angel yet, because those people mattered to Garnet. To Cam, Garnet wasn't a thing. She had just came into the world a different way. Even if her hands would never be warm naturally like his own.

"You're not a just 'thing' to me."

He told her touching her cheek with a smile on his face. He chuckled when she brought up Gwynn.

"Perhaps. Although there's nothing wrong with having lots of friends."

When they had left Selene had went to the doctor. Even with Liam's birth, Barrett had still remembered to send soldiers to the orphanage to help clean it up. One of them happily reported that Nero had a new prince.

"We should head back and meet your nephew."

Geoffers

As exciting was it was for there to be a new baby in the family, Selene needed to recover from childbirth and Gywnn needed to recover from her injuries. Everyone parted ways so Selene and Gwynn could rest. Geoffers read to Gwynn, like he had promised her he would, after they returned to her room. He frowned when Maverik showed up. He knew the family had a truce with him, but Geoffers didn't trust him. Why would he? Especially when Maverik told Gywnn many times that he was going to kill her. He would have argued to stay until Gwynn assured him that she'd be okay. Lizard Dog hadn't been out in a while and hearing the suggestion made him eager.

"All right, we'll be back soon."

He told Gwynn and gave her a kiss. He had Lizard Dog follow him out the room and took him outside.

Barrett

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll145/sojournfan/barrett.jpg

Today had been a tiring but very good day. When it seemed Selene was getting tired, the visiting stopped. Jared told Barrett that he wouldn't bother them unless it was necessary so that Selene could rest and Barrett could take care of her and Liam. He held his son as Selene took a nap. He was excited to be father but nervous at the same time. He didn't have memories of his mother and had no idea how to be a parent. He hoped he'd be a good one. He had been told loving his son was a good start to that and he did love his son, very much. He was also concerned that perhaps Maverik would hurt him. He had made it clear his mission was to eliminate all the Firsts. Barrett wasn't sure exactly if Liam was going to be a First but he wouldn't be a normal child given that both his parents were gods. Maverik could threaten him all day long and Barrett wouldn't care. If he threatened his son, though...The truce would be off because Barrett already knew he'd do anything for this tiny baby, just like Selene would as well. He kissed his son's forehead and cradled him against his chest.

"I love you, Liam. I'd do anything for you and so would Mommy."

Garnet

Garnet nodded. "He saved me," she agreed. "He didn't have to, but he did anyway. Even though he knows that if the truce is broken, I'll take my family's side. That's what you haven't seen of Maverik. There's compassion, deep down. I keep hoping he'll apply that compassion to my family if we just keep trying."

She smiled when Cam said she wasn't a thing. That was good. She wondered, though, what would happen when he started to get older and she didn't. Surely then anything they might have had would be over.

"Yeah, let's go see Liam," she agreed. "I'm excited to meet him."

As Geoffers left, Maverik took his seat by Gwynn. He spoke slowly, choosing his words with care. "I need to speak about what I said today," he began, "when I thought you were dying. First know that I meant every word of it. I am placing my highest hopes in you; you show most of the signs in you that you will be able to tame the First side of you. However, I also told you that I am only mostly convinced. There," he paused, organizing his thoughts, before continuing, "There is something more I must know. I cannot tell you what; that would only serve to confuse things further. I will," pause again, "All I will say is what I have already said: trust me to do the right thing.
"Also," and here his voice regained its normal authoritative tone, "You cannot tell anyone else what I have told you. Not Garnet, not Geoffers, not even your pet. No one. The words I said were for your ears only, and I only said them because I thought you were going to die. No one else can know. Is that understood?"
His tone was not angry, but it was stern. It made clear that this was not a suggestion, nor was it a secret. It was a command; a classified order that Gwynn was expected to follow. It also suggested that if she broke secrecy, it would go very badly for someone.

Gwynn

"Okay," Gwynn replied.

Her tone was agreeable, but also somehow... weary. Not just because she'd had a long day and was badly injured. Also because constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop was getting exhausting. Much as she tried to ignore it, it cast a shadow over her wedding plans knowing she might not live to get married. It felt irresponsible to even imagine bringing children into their family knowing she might be condemning them to a life without a mother.

It wasn't just Maverik bringing on the feeling of exhaustion. Afon was actually by far the most responsible party. Even so, Gwynn really wasn't in the mood for yet another conversation about whether or not Maverik was going to kill her, not when she was in both a lot of physical pain and had great cause to be happy. There was nothing she could do about his decision, no way she could think of to convince him. Better to just try to get on with life, and make sure her plans could accommodate her sudden and permanent disappearance if necessary.

Gwynn knew Maverik was reaching out much more than he was accustomed to doing, and she was grateful that he would even consider that she might not be as bad as he imagined after all, even if he hadn't entirely made up his mind. And yet... much as she knew she was being selfish, she couldn't help wishing that on this one special day when she'd gotten engaged and her nephew had been born, she could have made it to the end without having to have yet another conversation about her own potential murder.

She did her best not to let that show, though. Maverik was being nice, and she would be nice back.

"Like I said at the time, what you said to me was very kind. It meant a lot to me. I won't say anything about it."

What was there to say, anyway? Nothing had really changed. Gwynn had never believed that their association with Maverik was pointless, so that wasn't news, and she didn't know any more specifics than she had a day ago. Keeping silent wasn't hard when she didn't know what there would have been to tell in the first place.

"You don't need to worry about it."

The cheerfulness had instinctively returned to her voice, as she tried to make sure Maverik didn't have to feel bad or fret.

"Thanks for coming to help us today. It made a big difference. And thanks for giving Garnet the crossbow. It's reassuring to know she can protect herself."

Gwynn almost cracked a joke about when Garnet accidentally shot her with it, hoping to lighten the mood, but changed her mind. She didn't realize Garnet had already told Maverik about that, and she didn't want Maverik to think that Garnet wasn't doing a good job with his gift. Really, other than the little mishap at the start, Garnet had done quite well. Gwynn didn't see how they could get Garnet's amulet back, so this made a good substitute.

Maverik smirked and added, "When she is not doing my job for me, anyway. She told me she shot you in the leg. I assume it was not anything serious, since she seemed to make light of it. I may need to kill you, but that does not mean I want you to suffer."
Maverik stood. "I hope you recover quickly. Honestly, I do. I hate seeing anyone in pain, even firsts. I wish I could help, but I only know one way to take away your pain, and that is something I want to do even less."
He turned to leave, and added, "Congratulations on your engagement, by the way. Do you have a date yet? I would like to come."

Gwynn

Gwynn chuckled, and nodded ruefully. She smiled to acknowledge the polite well-wishes, but suddenly stopped short. One particular thing Maverik had said resonated: that he didn't want to take her pain in a lethal way because he wanted even less to kill her than to see her suffer. Somehow it had never occurred to her that he might feel that way, especially when she was even more at his mercy than usual... and somehow, it meant a lot.

It didn't seem like the sort of thing they could pursue a conversation about, though. Gwynn didn't even know how to express how it made her feel, she didn't want to talk more about death, and she didn't want to delve into more things she potentially couldn't tell Geoffers and her family.

She accepted the change of tone gladly, and added equally lightly, "Fortunately she's become a better shot since then. It wasn't bad, didn't hit bone - but I'll admit, it's a lot funnier now than it was at the time. That's how it goes with sisters, huh?"

Gwynn beamed when Maverik said he wanted to come to her wedding. She was surprised, and didn't manage to hide it well. After he'd utterly rebuffed her dinner invitation, she'd assumed any future offers would be a mere courtesy.

"Thank you! We did pick a date. It'll be in a couple of weeks. Once I'm feeling better and we've had time to get the whole thing organized." She took a piece of paper, and wrote down the time and place they had selected. "I can give you a real printed invitation, but we didn't know where to send it. It's great that you're coming. I didn't think you would want to, but I'm glad."

She added with a smile and wink, "Please try not to kill any of the guests."

Probably for the first time, Gwynn felt comfortable enough with Maverik to joke with him.
