  • Viggo Mortensen turned down Hobbit role

Mortenson was asked by one of the producers in 2008 if he would be interested in appearing in the Hobbit. He didn't want to take the part out of respect to the original author and told the producer that he knew that Aragorn wasn't in the Hobbit. And that there was a 60 year difference between the books.

He admitted that he's yet to see the first Hobbit film but said he is intrigued by what Jackson can do with the source material.

"I'm interested in seeing that world again, and seeing what Peter Jackson's done, how he's made use of the improvements in special effects and cameras and the different way of shooting, which will probably enhance the visual aspect of the experience, the sound also,"

Mortensen explained. "And I'm interested in seeing how he's managed to make three movies out of a relatively slim volume Jackson is a clever person I'm sure he'll have done something really interesting with it."

The Desolation of Smaug is due to come out December 2013 and the final film There and Back Again will follow in December 2014.

Looking forward to these films? Think Mortensen was right to turn down the role?
