  • Crossgen Founder Passes Away

The founder of Crossgen Comics, Mark Alessi, has passed away.

We have a post about this already in Random Thoughts, but news like this should be on the front page.

First and foremost, let me express my deepest condolences to his family and friends.

As I'm sure many of you know, Quarrels and Quills roots come from the Crossgen Message Boards. Archives #1 & #2 come from the Crossgen Boards. Many of our stories were based on the Crossgen comic called "The First".

Crossgen was a short lived comic company, but it had some great stories and amazing artwork. It was a company that had something for everyone. Not doing the traditional superhero comics, but trying a variety of genres to appeal to many different people. The comics are still thought fondly of today for the writing and artwork. It was a company that helped launch the career of many creators.

I personally loved the comic "Sojourn", to this day it is still one of my favorite series. I was a freshman in college when I read the "Wizard Special" about Crossgen and was drawn to "Sojourn". I picked up the back issues, it was on issue #3 when I discovered Crossgen. I quickly got into it and the Universe. I found company's website and joined the message boards that was set up for the fans to interact with each other and the creators. At first I just visited the discussion boards about the stories, but eventually, I ventured into the Roleplaying forum that was set up for the fans. There I met fellow fans, who like me, also had a writing bug. Friends, many who I have never met in person, that I consider lifelong friends. We had lots of fun, the stories we did, I look back upon fondly. Always with a smile on my face and often having a good laugh too. Especially when Qwaring's Clone #1 is involved.

Crossgen as fun as it was, was short lived, the company filed for bankruptcy in 2004 and was bought by Disney later that year. The site closed and many of RPers migrated over here, to what became Quarrels and Quills. Where not only do we have Crossgen stories, but many other types of stories . Over the years, more great people have joined us. We've made more lifelong friends here.

And as I think about it, our little RP spot on the Internet wouldn't exist with out Mark Alessi. A man that I have read people called complex. A man who had a vision and brought it to life. A man who brought to life stories that are still loved by many people. Stories that are finding new fans, even to this day. Characters that you can still time to time find fan art of on sites likes Deviant Art, even now. Over fifteen years since Crossgen last published a comic.

Thank you, Mark. Thank you for the wonderful stories your company created. Thank you for having a Roleplaying Forum on your company's message boards. Without that little section on your company's site, Quarrels & Quills would not exist. Most of all, thank you for all the memories.

    Rest in Peace, Mister Alessi.
