    Name: Lodi Eloka

“WHAT? How did this happen? How could you let this happen?!”

Eloka was screaming at a Peacekeeper several heads taller than her, but he still trembled before the raging woman. Luckily for him, she was just as angry with the camera people.

“How did she get up there? Why didn’t we see her?”

There were no answers – and even if there had – they wouldn’t have been sufficient.

What was she going to do. This had never happened before. Usually the Tributes were so...willing. So driven to make their Districts proud, even if they were weak and likely to die in the opening act. Should the Games start with 23...or should they have another Reaping in Five? There was nothing governing this situation, which actually gave her incredible freedom.

The woman was now a pillar of calm, increasing the nervousness of those around her tenfold. A smile arched across her lips.

“Send someone to Five. They need to know that there’s no glory in killing themselves. For the first time in Hunger Games history, let there be a second Reaping!”

    Televised Announcement:

“Attention viewers! Due to an unfortunate incident in training, we are providing an exciting new twist to the games!

District Five lost a Tribute to cowardice in training today. As a result, a replacement Tribute will be chosen. However, just as all the Districts must supply Tributes for the errors of District Thirteen, so all the Districts will be prepared to make atonement for Five’s mistake today.

A District will be randomly chosen to supply another female tribute for this year’s games.

And that District fortunate enough to feature another Tribute in the Hunger Games is...

    District One!

Congratulations, District One! Your sacrifice is to be commended!"

Ladies and Gentlemen! Finally, the moment you’ve all been waiting for – the unveiling of the Arena! Lodi Eloka has worked so very hard on this rendition and I daresay the Tributes are in for quite a ride! Here we are, our very first look at the Arena as the brave Tributes arrive....

The entry area is completely dark. Pitch blackness greeted the Tributes, prompting many to turn on their headlamps. The feeble lights reached far enough for them to see who was beside them, but nothing more. As the countdown began, an orange-yellow glow warmed the centre of the chamber, becoming recognizable as the Cornucopia as the light within it grew brighter.

Several packs and weapons were illuminated by the glow, spears and arrows glinting dully in the low light. Piles of rocks cast long shadows, obstructing the view of other Tributes and the room itself. Was it merely night, or was this darkness some unnatural state of matter? Only time would tell.

    Invisible loudspeakers continued the countdown.

    Let the Games begin!

Lodi Eloka and a view from the Arena

“Nice entry with the accidental blow-up. At least District Two is being interesting.” The diminutive woman was standing still, for once, staring at the central screens all focused on the Cornucopia. Her eyes flitted to the other screens periodically.

“Oh, and it looks like having an extra person isn’t going to help District One after all. Too bad.” She sounded more like she was purring.

“I don’t like how so many of them are getting lost to the edges. We talked about this. Let’s show them why the dark isn’t that much safer than the danger they know.”

The boy from Eleven had taken off running as soon as he could, figuring that Dora would finish him off before he even had a chance to grab anything. As soon as he was away from the central chamber, he flicked on his light. Eloka smiled. Nice opportunity.

    “Release them.”

The boy entered a cavern with a pool at its centre and piles of rocks all around. He could stay here, near the Cornucopia, and perhaps be missed as others explored the Arena. Choosing a spot toward the back of the cave, he allowed his light to brush past other openings. Through one of these lunged a massive lizard longer than he was tall.

The boy fell back screaming as the leviathan snapped at his head, the cave falling silent as it succeeded. His blood showed dark in the green light of the night-vision capable cameras – which didn’t miss a moment of the beast’s noisy feast. After the boy’s face was eaten off, the lizard shuffled off into the dark, ignoring the sounds echoing through the cavern from the central chamber.

So far, the first day was going swimmingly. They were down quite a few Tributes, sure, but all the interesting ones were left. A slight smile curled the corner of Eloka’s mouth as she marched the length of her podium over and over again. So much more to come...

Her left eye was watching Portmore and her little band and the smile turned into a grin. So, they’d found some water, had they? Well, she didn’t want to see anyone die of thirst.

“Open Hatch 16 beta.” She paused before continuing, “maximum load. On my mark.”

Most of the little troupe hovered around the seep, but the odd one had strayed. Time to see how they did on their own.

    “Three...two...one...mark.”

There would be very little warning for Portmore’s group. The seep would appear to suddenly move horizontal just before a massive explosion of water shot out from between cracks in the wall, all but flooding the small cavern. As water rushed out of the wall, it began rapidly running toward the Cornucopia – perhaps taking some Tributes with it.

“And cut in three...two...one...mark.” A downward slice of her hand punctuated her statement nicely. One keystroke effectively cut off the water supply to Fixture 16. Portmore’s alliance had just lost two members – with this, Eloka found some satisfaction – but it was short-lived.

“Who is that? Who is ... oh. Interesting. It’s nice to be provided with twists.”

Her voice suggested that it wasn’t exactly praise she was giving the Tributes, but if there was anything Eloka was going for, it was uniqueness. This was a special group and she planned to make sure they got lots of screen time. All of them. The real Careers were making a reasonable effort.

    Perhaps they should be rewarded.

Most of the room’s attention was focused on the Career’s attack on Portmore’s alliance, but Eloka was always one for the big picture. Shon’s slight motion – rubbing his hand on his pants – brought a sly smile to her face. He must have sensitive skin. It wouldn’t be long until Maia and Quint started to feel the effects of touching the stalagmites.

And until then – she really needed to keep some Tributes around so the Games weren’t over in two days. These Careers were a voracious bunch.

“Activate Central Sink on my mark. Three...two...one...mark.”

A low rumble would translate into a violent quake. Rocks around the Cornucopia bounced about and disappeared underneath it. Soon, it was apparent that the ground under the Cornucopia was falling away entirely. Huge cracks ran along the ground, seeming to split the cavern at random. The entire arena would feel the repercussions of this act.

    "I'm here bearing... gifts."

    "No one has authorized--"

"They're from the president himself. Call to confirm."

The technician spoke briefly into the phone, and then returned. "They said this one is for Brighten?" He held up a long, thin tube.

"That's right. The other two are the same. Send one to Portmore and one to Morrison."

    "Why those two...?"

"You aren't paid to think. Attach them to parachutes and get moving."

The so-called "gifts" for Morrison and Portmore weren't gifts at all. The Peacekeepers had found evidence of a female lover in McBride's life, and that was presumably the tribute he was working with - which meant that realistically, it was one of the older girls. Furthermore, since Nicolai was from Two and served in One, the likeliest candidate was from one of those districts; he would never have had prior opportunity to cross paths with tributes from other districts. Both Two and One had girl tributes who were eighteen. The president intended to pick out the accomplice tribute by their reaction to the "gift." One would just be confused... the other would get the shock of her life. Allasayne Brighten had accused Gossamer, but now they would be sure.

“Our Careers are getting restless.” She smirked. It was she who made them that way. Too many deaths on the first day made for some boring television. Careers on edge…made just the opposite.

“Let’s spice things up a bit, shall we?”

Waving her hand at someone out of her line of sight, a computer command created the sound of dripping water at certain points in the cavern. It would move as the Career pack did, leading them deep into the Arena. Soon enough, they’d be walking in wet gravel and the dripping water sound was replaced with frog song.

    “This should be fun.

The frogs may be blind, but they would prove interesting to catch...
