    Shuya's thread of awesome stuff

Hey. Post something really cool that you've found on the internet in this little thread. Especially something that inspires you or makes you happy. It'll be great, trust me.

I'll start with a little something I saw/heard the other day by a brilliant guy called Shane Koyczan, who I totally have a man crush on right now:

    Your turn!
"I beg nothing. Not even your pardon. I do not even beg to differ. I differ without begging, and would rather beg from an ancient, rib staring, sightless grovellor at the foot of a column than beg from you sir. The truth is not in you, and your feet smell"

I found Lindsey Stirling on YouTube a couple years ago. I find her to be quite the violinist.

QC1: From this day forth you shall be called "Sprinkle Berryweather".

Kevin Flynn: The Grid. A digital frontier. I tried to picture clusters of information as they moved through the computer. What did they look like? Ships, motorcycles? Were the circuits like freeways? I kept dreaming of a world I thought I'd never see. And then, one day... ...I got in!

I've run into a short but interesting book binding video twice now.

I've mainly met up with the Facebook version:

but I'm not sure how that will work here. If it gives trouble, I did find this as well:

Once you get past the printing part, it's close but not exactly like the European bookbinding method I'm most familiar with.

Okay, maybe this isn't fun in some senses, but I grew up hearing stories of disasters. I picked up a taste for them, personally. So a local museum's site has a few nice stories I thought I'd share:

    This engineer really was lucky:

This is the train he was "supposed" to be on:

The whole story archive (so far those two stories, plus one more):

I found my favorite hula. It's old, so the video is not the best quality. It's unusual, and very kid-friendly. It's also unique. I've never seen anything else like it. This might be why it's my personal favorite, when I normally can't pick a favorite.

P.S. it's about a toad who finds true love. I said it was unique.

Kulit posted this on Facebook in honor of the Year of the Fire Monkey:

(Modern fire dance; the group is Russian, but I'm not sure the style is specifically Russian. )

    I'll add these myself:

    (Traditional Samoan fire dance)

    (Traditional Filipino candle dance)

    P.S. Someday I really need to find out how to embed videos properly. I tried, and... not that way. {rueful Smile}

The Hokule'a is a modern re-creation of a great Polynesian voyaging canoe. In fact, it's the oldest modern re-creation of a Polynesian voyaging canoe. The Hokule'a started a renaissance of canoe building and sailing that started in the 1970's and continues to this day. Because they don't just build them, they sail them using them as close to the way of their ancestors as they can, complete with ancient Micronesian navigation techniques taught by a master navigator they found who was actually willing to teach them the ways he'd learned.

This is a log of theirs, talking about their relationship with a particular type of bird: http://www.hokulea.com/crew-blog-kaw...-and-the-noio/
