Akaavi Spar

The padawan was of no great concern to her - well, none of them were, really - but fact that a Sith was working with a couple of Jedi to put down some slavers was...interesting. It occurred to her that this was exactly the kind of crew Captain Xolte would be working with. Crazy woman. She had planned on replying to the Sith when she was rudely interrupted by the man she was holding suddenly throwing her against the wall.

His body began crackling with Dark energy and she started laughing as he observed his body. The Force users in the room would feel a strange pull as he flexed his arms and his new cybernetics. He didn't laugh very long. The Mandalorian took him out with a swift blow to the head and he crumpled to the ground. Standing over his body, she raised her visor as she addressed the onlookers, face calm despite the savagery of the moment before.

"They aren't all prisoners. Some of them paid for this. Like this man. I have no business with any of the others. We needn't be in each other's way."

Reyth

Why did it happen. Why now? She'd been having...a nice time. If she was honest, possibly the best time she'd had in years. For once, things were quiet and smooth and...friendly. And now, now she'd ruined it. She could remember feeling their fear - hearing their terrified cries as she whipped the beach into something inhospitable. The proof was just behind her, over her right shoulder. An empty beach and a cauldron of glass.

Even Arksynn was mad at her this time and she couldn't blame him. He'd been putting up with her for far too long as it was. She was a menace - and bad for his health. Reyth didn't move from her position, hunched over her knees, buried in her cloak. But she didn't have to look to know what he looked like. How happy he looked sitting on the porch playing a game. He deserved to stay with these people. He was the one worth saving. At least, she felt like he still had a chance to be something better than they'd been taught.

It was too late for her, though. Anewe had broken her into so many little pieces - and then glued her back together with...this. This rage she didn't understand. Couldn't control. Anewe said it was part of her, but Reyth knew better. Everything that woman had said was a lie. No, this thing had been shoved into her - forced into her brain, into her bones, into her being - but it wasn't her. It wasn't her.

Visper Averrod

"Paid...?" Visper repeated, almost dumbfounded. She couldn't imagine what would possess someone to submit to such a thing voluntarily, let alone want it enough to pay. She remembered how Felix had returned to her - freshly scarred, claustrophobic, and plagued with nightmares. She thought of Vanity and Apathy, with their horribly damaged bodies and wounded souls. The hell the girls had been through, and the painful recovery ahead.

How could anyone be willing? And if they were... why subject children or captured soldiers to such atrocities? It seemed even worse, somehow, if willing recruits had been an option on the table.

Lana was more focused on the immediate situation. She regarded the sudden carnage with no visible emotion. "Well," she said briskly. "That's that settled, then. Let's move on to the others."

As far as Lana was concerned, this had worked out fine. A potential problem had been eliminated before it was even identified, and no confrontation with the Mandalorian seemed imminent.

Siralai Mahr

Siralai wanted to give Reyth some time to calm down, and she wasn't sure if her own presence would help or hinder that process. Once Reyth had a bit of time to cool, though, Siralai sought her out. Finding Reyth crouched and hidden in her cloak, Siralai gave her a sympathetic look, which Reyth wouldn't be able to see, then sat down beside her - which Reyth would certainly both hear and sense.

"That must have been frightening for you," Siralai said gently. "Everyone else is fine. Don't worry. How are you doing, Reyth? Are you alright?"

Akaavi Spar and Padawan Dallyn

Well at least the Sith was willing to be reasonable. The Jedi, on the other hand, warranted Akaavi's watchful glare. The young padawan gave her a strange look before he side stepped past her into an adjoining room like he was going to knock him over the head next. It was infuriating not to be taken at face value. She had been very clear with her intentions, she thought. The full-blown Jedi wandered off to parts of the lab unknown. She couldn't put her finger on it, but something didn't smell right about her. The best thing to do would be to get out of here before anything else happened to compromise her mission.

"Everybody stay put!"

Too late. Akaavi was holding her quarry by the back of his shirt, in the process of walking out the door to get on the first lift out, when Padawan Dallyn's cry went out. As much as the child had sounded like a baby nerf mewling for its mother moments earlier, the timbre of his voice had changed completely. This was a voice to be listened to. She unceremoniously let the body drop to the floor before she stuck her head into the room - the main server, by the looks of things. The boy was bent over a console, fingers flying.

It wasn't until the alarms stopped that she actually realized they'd been going the whole time. They had been obnoxious and distracting, so the bounty hunter had tuned them out. The silence seemed far more ominous. Warily stepping into the room, she asked the begged question - albeit as more of a statement. She had a bounty to turn in.

"Why."

"Because we didn't turn the alarm off in time." Dallyn shook his head slightly as he realized he needed to explain, while also continuing to work. "The lab has a failsafe. If no one turns off the alarm, a toxic substance gets released. There has to be an antidote somewhere. I just have to find it...in about 45 seconds. Give or take."

Clearly, the researchers weren't willing to share their work - even unto death.

Reyth

She'd felt her approach and knew it was Siralai, but still, she couldn't help flinching. Drawing herself inward. Making herself smaller. As small as she could get, she was still unable to reach the size she felt she wanted to be. As it turned out, nothing was a hard thing to achieve.

Why was she here?

Her mind and her feelings reached out for the things that had always been there in other people, waiting for her. Anger. Disappointment. Lust. Manipulation. Fear. Disgust. When she didn't find them, it was like her brain lost its footing and flung her swirling thoughts into empty space. She grabbed after the thoughts, the terrible thoughts and ideas. Those expectations told her what to expect from people - and more importantly, how to respond. What was she going to do without them?

Frantically, she tried to come up with something else and set upon the idea that she could work with what was there. Maybe then she'd know. Her feelings reached out again, gingerly. Probing. Retreating before inching closer to Siralai's aura.

Reyth barely recognized what she found. It had been so long... Her fears told her that it was a lie and a trap, but it was oh so plain to see that it really wasn't. This strange Jedi was exactly what she proclaimed to be. Felt exactly the things she said she did. Knowing this...just made everything she'd done seem far, far worse. She deserved to die. But she couldn't help herself. That selfishness in her wouldn't let her depart without knowing what it felt like to be held by someone who didn't have an ulterior motive. Who didn't want to trip her up or exploit her. Who actually did want only good things - real good things - for her.

Still hunched over, she pulled her cowl further down over her face and shoved her fists into her tightly closed eyes like it would stop the tears from leaking out. Then, ever so slowly, she leaned over and rested her shoulder on Siralai's leg, head against her knee. The nearness...of something...someone wholesome felt...unlike anything.

If only she hadn't screwed it up. She might have had a shot at being happy.

Visper Averrod

Visper, despite her elevated temper a short time before, was now the perfect picture of Jedi calm.

"Don't panic," she said. "We'll all look for it. They would have had to keep it close in case of an accident, and they wouldn't have had much time in that scenario either, so we shouldn't have to look far. Everyone split up and take a section."

She probably should have been worried, but there was no time for that. No time for failure to dull her mind. They had to work quickly - and she had to believe in their success. Failure was not an option. Failing to return to their new daughters... was definitely not an option.

Visper added as an afterthought, "And think outside the box. An antidote may not look like medicine. If the toxin is airborne, the antidote may be too." That would be, after all, the most effective way to distribute a failsafe to everyone affected by a mishap that hung in the air. "It could be a gas, so keep an eye out for some kind of release valve or mechanism."

Siralai Mahr

Siralai was shocked when Reyth initiated physical contact. That showed incredible trust, and Siralai was filled with gratitude, with awe that she had been entrusted with such a gift by one who had suffered so much.

"Thank you, Reyth," Siralai said gently. "I'm going to put my arm around your shoulder, alright?"

Seeing no objection, she did as she had said and put a comforting arm around the Sith girl. She knew words were easily misinterpreted. Easily disbelieved. But she also knew Reyth was reaching out in the Force and sensing her, so she made her emotions easy to read. Care. Compassion. Warmth.

"You're very brave, Reyth," Siralai told her. "You're very strong. I know it doesn't seem like it now, but I really think what just happened was for the best. No one was seriously hurt - including you, though we'll need to see to those cuts - and now we know what you're up against. Now we can start finding a way to help you. Don't give up, Reyth. And I'm not giving up on you."

Padawan Dallyn and Akaavi Spar

His fingers flew over the keyboard, searching the computer for clues instead of the walls and ceilings. He tried not to think about the poison filling his lungs. Tried to keep his breathing regular. He felt light headed. Was the that from the toxin? No, it was from his shallow breathing. Calm. Calm.

"Master Visper is right - it's airborne! There's a code. It's...three triangles in a stack. Green triangles."

Calm was one thing. Efficiency was another. Akaavi opened fire on the ceiling above her, shredding the ceiling tiles. She wasn't going to gently probe around looking for the cure. The cure was going to come to her come hell or high water.

Reyth

It felt...so good. So. Good. Not just the warmth and the weight of the arm across her shoulders. The Force...spoke to her. Whispers. For the first time, those whispers weren't about how worthless she was, how she should amplify her hate, how she was nothing. The whisper said she was...loved. Worthy.

Her shoulders shook in spite of her desperate desire to keep a stony demeanour. No sound escaped her lips, even though she was struggling to breathe. She hated to move at all. Worried that the arm would be taken away. The feelings snatched from her. Now that she had a taste, she didn't want it to go.

As for the words that followed...Reyth wasn't sure she had the strength to believe her. She wanted to. Desperately wanted to. Her mind was restarting, though, and with it came the endless stream of thought that she had made her bed and now she had to lie in it. That there was no end to the hell she was in. There was no getting out or getting better. She really wanted those thoughts to be lies.
