Eve Travers and Cambria Morehouse

Eve's eyes fluttered open.

I found the acromantula, she thought groggily. Or, more accurately, the acromantula had found her.

Not that it was particularly helpful to Rosemary, though. Eve's wand had fallen somewhere in the underbrush, and her broom was snapped in half. She took an inventory of her own physical condition: one ankle very sore, bruised ribs, head still fuzzy. The ankle might or might not be broken. Eve wasn't sure if she could walk on it, and if not, that would make getting out of here very difficult. The ribs were probably just bruised. Her head, though - that might be a problem. She'd had serious enough head injuries to get knocked unconscious twice within a pretty short span of time. She wasn't a mediwitch, but she knew enough to realize that probably wasn't good for the state of her brain.

"Keeva. Can you help me find my wand?" Eve asked.

That would at least be a step toward finding their way to safety - hopefully, for Eve and Keeva both.

Cambria squeezed Rosemary's hand in return. "We'll find Keeva," she promised. "We'll find both of them."

Unfortunately, it was true that they probably shouldn't split up again. They'd now gone from one being in need of rescue to probably two; if Rosemary and Cambria got into scrapes too, there would be no one left to come provide help.

"Last I saw Eve, she was flying east. She was headed toward the acromantula colony - if we head that direction, maybe we'll find her too."

Whatever had happened to Eve, hopefully she'd been short of it. If she was in the middle of a nest of aggressive acromantulas, Cambria wasn't sure what they would do - but they would do something. Cambria wasn't going to leave her girlfriend behind.

Keeva

She had startled when Eve spoke. The movement of the tree roots had captured most of her attention. Eve's voice sounded...odd. The woman was clearly badly hurt. She hadn't moved and Keeva could sense the heat gathering at points of injury at various parts of her body. It was hard for her to imagine why an ankle might look like it did now. Humans were flexible, but not usually quite that flexible.

The wand. Eve could fix herself up with magic! Keeva let out a excited chirring sound and scurried off into the bushes in search of the witch's wand.

Rosemary

"Then we fly east. We will find them."

Rosemary began flying in the prescribed direction, taking care of fly at the same speed as Cambria. Her eyes were on the canopy, looking for broken branches or snagged robes. Some sort of sign that Eve had gone into the forest proper on her search.

She sat upright on her broom for a moment, lightheaded from looking down so long while moving. It was only then that she noticed the strangely coloured patch of forest she and Cambria were fast approaching. It was the first unusual thing she'd seen, so she slowed down and waved at Cambria.

"Hey! What do you think of this?"

Of course, yelling so close to the acromantula colony might not have been the wisest choice, but it was a risk she thought worth taking.

The thought occurred to her that perhaps Eve had seen the same thing and had investigated. She began flying closer and called out.

"Eve! Keeva? Are you here?"

Eve Travers and Cambria Morehouse

"I'm here!" Eve tried to call out, but the fall had knocked the wind out of her, and her bruised ribs prevented enough intake of air to make her voice heard. "I'm here!"

If only she had her wand. If only she could... shoot up a flare, or something. It was very kind of Keeva to go look for the wand - and with such apparent enthusiasm - but Rosemary and Cambria would likely have moved on by the time she found it.

Fortunately, something near the canopy caught Cambria's eye. A snapped piece of broom, caught in the crook of a tree. She couldn't be positive it was Eve's - but there was nothing recognizably not Eve's about it, and what were the odds that two people on brooms had gone astray in this exact area?

"Rosemary, I think she's here somewhere! That looks like her-- yikes!"

The tree had taken another swipe, this time at Cambria. Cambria did a duck and dodge. Not the most graceful move ever, but at least she stayed on her broom.

"I think it's a juvenile Whomping Willow. It must have knocked Eve off her broom. We'd better be careful..."

Eager as she was to find Eve, it wouldn't be helpful to her if all three of them ended as tree casualties.

Rosemary Bain

“A Whomping Willow? What is one doing out here? Ooop!” Rosemary had gotten a little too close in her examination and had to dodge a branch. “I should have paid more attention in Herbology.”

She flew back a few paces and stared at the tree, thoughtful. Now what was it that she was trying to remember about Whomping Willows. Oh yes. The Freezing Charm would do it. However, for that she really should have eyes on her actual target. What if Eve or Keeva were caught in the crossfire, as it were?

“Let’s get below the canopy so we can see the tree itself! The first of us to see the trunk casts the Freezing Charm!”

Having shouted out her plan, Rosemary dropped through the canopy - and directly into a mass of spider webs. Her progress downward was immediately halted as the webs stuck to her broom and robes. At least her wand was brandished out ahead of her, but her arm was all but frozen in position.

“Watch out for webs!” Rosemary yelled out, hoping she wasn’t too late. Was this some sort of elaborate trap?

Cambria Morehouse

Cambria heard Rosemary’s shout just in time, and pulled up as the webs came into view. A few strands whipped across her face and caught in her hair, but she was able to duck the worst of it and swing around.

Why were there webs? Was she so disoriented by the forest that they were closer to the acromantula colony than she had realized? Had the colony moved… or expanded? There was little time for such questions - except that the answers might prove critical in the near future. Having to deal with an influx of acromantulas would complicate the plan significantly. Best not to be seen. In and out, as quietly as possible.

“I think I have it!” Cambria said. “The Whomping Willow, just ahead!”

Getting a clear shot was trickier. She had to dodge several moving limbs. While this tree didn’t quite pack the punch of its parent, it was very lithe and quick - and the punch it packed was enough.

Immobulus!”

The tree paused mid-swing.

“Rosemary, hurry! We won’t have much time.”

Trusting that Rosemary would follow, Cambria descended quickly to the forest floor. “Eve? Eve, are you there?”

“I’m here!” Came back the faint call.

Rosemary

Cambria was right - they didn’t have much time. She needed to get herself free before the freezing charm ended and hopefully before whoever built these webs arrived to check them. Oh, that was what was odd.The webs were placed horizontally between the canopy and the ground and they seemed to be lacking the usual tactile lines that would run from the web to the spider’s hiding spot. Undoubtedly she could think about what this means later…after she got out of this mess. She adjusted her wand in her hand carefully, took a breath to steady herself and spoke while flicking her wrist.

“Diffindo!”

The front end of the web gave way, causing Rosemary to pitch forward toward the ground at an alarming pace. She closed her eyes. It would only hurt for a moment, then she could finish cutting away the rest of the webs and get over to Cambria and find Eve…

Except the ground didn’t come. Her head hit something that was simultaneously forgiving and really not. Like getting pushed onto a bounce-about when one wasn’t ready. Rosemary opened her eyes and found herself looking at the ground less than a meter away. Movement pulled her attention to her left and she managed to turn her head.

Keeva. Keeva was slowly approaching, a bit of webbing stuck to a few of her legs and…was that Eve’s wand that she was dragging behind her? It then struck her what she had hit, and once she tried to move her head and found a large-holed, quickly spun web narrowly supporting her she was certain.Rosemary was simultaneously fighting relief and pride while trying to get her heart’s pounding under control. Still she couldn’t help but try to rush into an explanation. Anything to clear the air between her and Keeva.

“You saved me. And you’re helping Eve. Thank-you Keeva. Keeva I don’t know what you heard but…”

The acromantula made an abrupt sound and motioned with her front leg at the web that stil held Rosemary prisoner.

“Oh, of course, you’re right. First things first, then. And then…we’ll talk?” Rosemary had looked up briefly at her prison before checking back in with Keeva. The acromantula was busy looking about at all the trees with suspicion. Very well then.

A few more pointed cuts, with some more careful gestures at the webbing around her broom, and she was standing on her own two feet again. Her clothing stuck to itself in odd places, causing her to tug at her robes. No time.

“Keeva, can you get us back to Eve?”

The acromantula skittered off without looking back. Well, at least she was still in a helping mood, even if she didn’t want to talk to her. Hopefully when they got out of here Keeva would give her a chance to explain. Or at the very least, let her know she was surprised as well.

“Eve! Cambria! We’re on our way!” she called as she fought through the underbrush after Keeva.

Eve Travers and Cambria Morehouse

Eve was still lying more or less where she fell. She couldn’t walk on her ankle, she didn’t have her wand, and even if she’d been in better shape, she knew it wasn’t a good idea to wander when someone was (hopefully) looking for you - you could pass each other and never even realize it. Better to stay put.

She had assumed she’d see Keeva again first - assuming Keeva actually decided to come back. Eve thought that was the message being conveyed, but she didn’t speak acromantula.

Instead, it was Cambria who appeared through the trees. “Eve!”

“I’m here.” Her voice was stronger now that she’d been found.

Cambria knelt beside her, surveyed the damage briefly, then wrapped Eve in the gentlest of hugs.

“I didn’t leave,” Eve said.

Cambria wasn’t sure what this meant. Was it the head injury talking? It concerned Cambria that Eve had hit her head again, so soon on the heads of another head trauma…

“I didn’t leave,” Eve said again. “I just got knocked off my broom. By a tree. And fell here.”

Oh.

“I know,” Cambria said, and gave her a gentle kiss on the forehead. “No one thought you left. We were just worried about you. Glad you’re okay.”

Or at least would be, once they got her to safety. Cambria began fixing up Eve as best she could, till they made it to the hospital wing. She hoped Rosemary would find them quickly, but she didn’t want to shout for her lest they draw the attention of the acromantula colony instead.
